PM Interface for Disk eXPress 2.31 or Later
W H A T I S D X P S H E L L ?
DXP Shell is a VX-Rexx program that provides a full PM interface to DXP
2.31 for OS/2. Many agree that DXP (c), Albert Shan, is the very best
program for the storing, and archiving of their diskettes in the form of
diskette images. I agree.
But, DXP is not without its limitations. For example, the only interface
options for DXP are the OS/2 or OS/2-DOS command lines. Some see this as an
advantage, due to the fact that PM and the WPS are not requried to make use
of the program. But, it's command line nature also has the achillies heel
of requriring the user to become familiar with a multititude of command
line switches. Especially if the user decides to make use of some of the
more advanced features of the program.
This is where DXP Shell comes in. DXP Shell provides the DXP user with a
PM interface complete with Entry Fields, Check Boxes, List Boxes, Radio
Buttons, and Command Buttons. These controls allow the user to *visually*
manipulate the command line options for DXP. This insures that the
diskette is imaged as intended without the need for viewing the DXP help
screens each time you image or print a diskette.
DXP Shell can also allow users to setup WPS associations with their
diskette images and DXP Shell. This gives users the advantage of being
able to simply double-click on an existing diskette image to spawn a
instance of DXP Shell. Then the user may print a diskette, edit or create
a description for the image, etc..., all without the need to even know the
command line options for DXP!

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
Before you install DXP Shell, it is important to insure that DXP 2.31 (not
included) is properly installed. Since DXP Shell is a "Shell" by nature,
you will require the command line program DXP.EXE, DXP16.EXE or DXP32.EXE
included in the DXP shareware or commerical distribution. DXP is available
at most OS/2 BBSs under the file name: DXPxxx.ZIP, where 'xxx' refers to
the version number.
After installing DXP, please be sure that the directory containing DXP's
executibles is in your search PATH enviornment variable. This is insure
that DXP Shell can find and utilitize DXP when needed. For additional tips
on configuring DXP, see "Configuring and Optimizing DXP" below.
UNPACKING THE ARCHIVE, INSTALLING DXP SHELL:
The DXP Shell shareware distribution is a ZIP commpressed archive. You
will need either InfoZip Unzip 5.1 or PKUNZIP version 2.04g or higher to
decompress the archive.
To Install:
1) Create a directory for the DXP Shell files (e.g. C:\DXPSHELL)
2) Unzip the archive into that directory.
3) Insure that the file VROBJ.DLL resides either in this
directory, or in another directory specified in your LIBPATH.
4) Insure that DXP version 2.31 or later is properly installed and
in your search path (see above).
5) Change into the DXPShell directory you created above.
6) Run the OBJECT.CMD file to create a program object for DXP
Shell on your desktop.
7) Run DXP Shell by double clicking its icon.
CONFIGURING AND OPTIMIZING DXP (Additional Notes):
DXP comes with both 16 bit OS/2 and DOS family mode(DXP.EXE), and 32 bit
OS/2 executibles(DXP32.EXE). DXP shell is configured to utilized the first
program it discovers in your search path called DXP.EXE. Under OS/2 2.x,
it is recommended to rename the DXP.EXE file included with DXP, to
DXP16.EXE, and to rename DXP32.EXE to DXP.EXE. This will give you the best
performance under 32 bit OS/2.
You might also like to set up an association between DXP Shell and your
diskette images. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use a common
extention for all of your diskette image files other than the default of
.EXE. In other words, create all of your disk images as non-self
extracting archives with a common extention of your choice (*.DXP is a good
choice).
After you've decided on an extention to use for your disk images, you can
associate the DXP Shell Program Object (created with OBJECT.CMD, see above)
with all files with that extention. To do this:
1) Open the pop-up menu for the DXP Shell Program Object and
choose Open | Settings.
2) When the DXP Shell Settings notebook comes up, click the
Association tab.
3) In the field labled "New Name:" place the name of your DXP file
extention (for example, "*.DXP" without the quotes).
4) Choose the "Add" button to create the association.
5) Close the settings notebook.
Now, since all of your diskette image files are associated with DXP Shell,
when you double click a disk image object, DXP Shell will start with the
image already referenced in the Filename: field.
