  12. I as a fan of the OS/2 System Sounds feature included with OS/2 2.1 via
  13. MMPM/2 1.1, I wanted to associate sounds to OS/2 on my ThinkPad.  I had
  14. heard that you could use the OS/2 Tune Editor (part of PM Diary for you
  15. long time OS/2 users) in the Productivity Folder to create system sounds
  16. if you didn't have a sound card.  After failed attempts getting it to
  17. work, one of the Boca mutimedia folks told me that the .$$A files created
  18. by the tune editor contained multiple tunes in one file.  He continued to
  19. tell me that the MMPM/2 System Sounds feature could only handle the file
  20. if all but one of the tunes in the file were removed.  Lo and behold, it
  21. worked.....so I have made these tunes (I call them System Tunes) available
  22. for others who do not have a sound card, use a laptop, and have decided
  23. that the SPKRDD package takes up too much CPU for
  24. their use.  (Take a look at SPKRDD --- the Speaker driver for OS/2 if you have not looked at
  25. it--it allows WAV files to be played over your PC speaker, requiring NO
  26. SOUND CARD!

  31. The SYSTUNES.EXE file unpacks into the following sound files:

  49. Instructions     These instructions will unpack from the SYSTUNES.EXE file
  50. ------------     as well.

  52. Advanced Users with OS/2 2.1, MMPM/2 and System Sounds:
  53.  
  54. Unpack SYSTUNES.EXE where the sound files are kept, usually
  55. \MMOS2\Sound Bites (or \MMOS2\SOUNDS) on the drive where OS/2 2.1 was
  56. installed.  Associate tunes to events as you would WAV files in the
  57. Sound object.

  59. Other Workplace Shell Users:
  60.  
  61. Download SYSTUNES.ZIP (it contains SYSTUNES.EXE) and drag SYSTUNES.EXE into the Sound Bites
  62. (or Sounds) folder located in the Multimedia folder on the OS/2 2.1 Desktop.
  63. (If you do not see the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder, make a shadow from
  64. the drive folder where you installed MMPM/2.  There should be a Sound Bites
  65. (or Sounds) folder under MMOS2 in the tree view of the Drive folder.)  With
  66. the Sound Bites (or Sounds) folder open, double-click on the SYSTUNES.EXE
  67. object.  A window will open, and the file will automatically unpack into the
  68. various tunes.  Shred the SYSTUNES.EXE object after you see the new tune
  69. objects with the extension .$$A appear in the Sounds folder.  Close the Sound
  70. Bites (or Sounds) folder.  Use the Sound object in the Multimedia folder (or
  71. System Setup folder) to associate tunes to events.

  73. Command Line Users:

  75. Learn Workplace Shell--you should know better!  Copy SYSTUNES.EXE to \MMOS2\Sound Bites (or \MMOS2\SOUNDS) subdirectory.
  76. Change to that subdirectory, type SYSTUNES, and press enter to unpack tunes.
  77. Then erase SYSTUNES.EXE, goto the Workplace Shell and open the Sound object
  78. in the Multimedia folder (or System Setup folder) to associate tunes to events.

  86. System Requirements:

  89. 1. OS/2 2.1 with MMPM/2 1.1 installed
  90.  
  91.    If you have not done this and you do not have a sound card, just
  92.    install the Software Motion Video option.  This will install the
  93.    System Sounds feature, and let you play with the software video which
  94.    also requires no special hardware to see movies (sound card required
  95.    only to hear audio that accompanies video.)  See OS/2 2.1 documentation
  96.    for more assistance.

  98. 2. Tune Editor (part of Personal Productivity option)

  100.    If you did a full install of OS/2 2.1, you will find this in the
  101.    Productivity folder located initially in the System Setup folder.
  102.  
  103.    If you did a selective install, and did not install the Tune Editor,
  104.    have your OS/2 2.1 diskettes ready and do the following:

  106.    Open Selective Install (Icon located in the System Setup folder.  Just
  107.    select System Setup from the Desktop pop-up menu.)  Select OK on the
  108.    first window that pops up (do not change anything there).  On the next
  109.    window that opens, check the box next to Tools and Games, click on the
  110.    More... button on the same line, then check the box next to Personal
  111.    Productivity.  Select OK (the window will close) and click the Install
  112.    button at the bottom.  Follow the instructions from there.
