ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. WATCHIT PLUS Requirements ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
WATCHIT PLUS should be installed on a requester that has access to all servers
you wish to monitor.
The requester should have enough memory to perform all the data collection for
the servers you select. Each collection activity is a separate session.
The requester should have disk space sufficient to store collected data. A
single day's session of 8 hours with 100 users may require 100k. Initial space
requirements are at least 2 megabytes.
During installation you must be connected to the network and logged on as an
administrator.
During the installation all the servers that can be located will be added to
the data base and have a directory created for them. A utility is provided to
add, delete or rename servers after the installation.
To monitor multiple DOMAINS you must add their names to the "othdomains ="
entry of the [requester] section of the IBMLAN.INI.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Using the demo: ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You have been provided with one of the tree anaylsis programs and some sample
data.
Analysis
1. Select the WATCHIT ANALYSIS icon.
2. Pull down the list of servers available and pick the one supplied.
3. Select the xxx.SUM file.
4. From the Detail menu select Configuration. There are two scrollable list
boxes, one for capacity and the other performance. They are the
IBMLAN.INI parameters in effect for the sample.
5. The IBMLAN.INI box displays some of the parameters and the usage levels
this sample had on them.
6. From the Detail menu select Graph Response.
7. You may print these graphs for later reference.
8. Scroll through the Detail list box on the main window to a sample that
indicated the highest response time and double click. The display will
indicate all the activity that was occurring during this sample.
9. To obtain suggestions for improving response press the suggestion button
on the graph window.
10. Experiment ........ there are other features that will provide you with
assistance.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. WATCHIT PLUS (Data collection) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
WATCHIT PLUS is operated remotely on any OS/2 requester that is logged on with
full administrator privileges. WATCHIT PLUS provides two methods of performing
data collection. Manual collection allows you to start and stop data collection
and monitoring at your discretion. Automated collection is performed by the
WATCHIT PLUS TIMER program discussed later. p.
The data in the window will be updated after the first sample period has ended.
The updated fields are:
Mean response (ms)
Number of sessions
Shares in use
Shares outstanding
Traffic received
Traffic sent
During the data collection you may obtain details about the server. Selecting
the Sessions or Shares button will provide information related to these
activities. They are the equivalent of a Net Share and Net Who. The data is a
snapshot and is not updated.
Graph
You may display a continually updated graph of
Mean response
Shares in use
Traffic received
Traffic sent
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. TIMER ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To control and automate data collection, WATCHIT PLUS includes a timer program.
This program provides for creating the schedule and starting the collection at
the proper day and time. The collection ends after the number of designated
number of samples is taken.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. WATCHIT PLUS maint ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The installation program attempts to locate all your servers when creating the
\WITPLUS and server directories. The MAINT program will provide you the
ability to add, delete or rename servers that were not accounted for during the
installation
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. ALIAS Analysis ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ALIAS Analysis provides will provide the information necessary to understand
the current usage of your ALIAS definitions.
By double clicking on a sample time entry you can obtain the detail
information about the sample.
You may graph on an individual basis more detail for each alias. Double
clicking on the desired alias provides a graph of the number of shares in use
for that alias. You may need to resize the window to have the graph properly
formatted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. SESSION Analysis ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
SESSION provides analysis of user activity to understand the current resource
usage of your users. The information provided is a snapshot at the end of each
sample period. This means that connections and file opens which occur between
samples will not be recorded.
By double clicking on a sample time entry you can obtain the detail
information about the sample. The display is the same used in the Analysis
program.
You may graph on an individual basis more detail for each user. Double clicking
on the desired user provides a graph of the number of connections and file
opens. You may need to resize the window to have the graph properly formatted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. PLUS STATUS ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Continually updated graphics provide a visual display of availability. Select
an ICON to get the current status of shares, users, and response.
Domain controllers, serversand peers are detected. As new servers or domain
controllers are brought on line they will be added to the display.
Domain controlers, servers and peers that are no longer active on the network
will be displayed with the universal NO symbol drawn through them.
Double click in any active server for details related to who is logged on and
what aliases are in use. You will need to have administrative privileges for
successful access of this data.
