  29.         Welcome to the IBM Networks Primary Logon Client for Microsoft Windows
  30.         NT (hereinafter called IBM Networks Client).  IBM Networks Client
  31.         is an add on to the Microsoft Windows NT Network function and enables
  32.         users to log on and go through the authentication process directly on
  33.         locations that include IBM OS/2 Warp Server domains, DCE Cells, and
  34.         Windows NT systems.  It also provides to the Windows NT system all of
  35.         the OS/2 Warp Server functions, such as:
  36.  
  37.            *   Connecting to home directories
  38.            *   Setting up and connecting to logon assignments
  39.            *   Running shared applications
  40.            *   Connecting to aliases
  41.            *   Checking DASD limits
  42.  
  43.         Using IBM Networks Client, a user's home directory and logon
  44.         assignments are automatically connected after the user successfully
  45.         logs on and goes through the authentication process on an OS/2 Warp
  46.         Server domain.
  47.  
  48.         For Windows NT system users accessing DCE Cells, the IBM Networks
  49.         Primary Logon Client for Windows NT can support a user's home directory
  50.         being automatically connected after the user successfully logs on and
  51.         goes through the authentication process.

  54.     2.0 Prerequisites
  55.     -----------------

  57.         You must have the following prerequisite components installed on
  58.         your Windows NT system before you can install IBM Networks Client:
  59.  
  60.            *   Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0
  61.            *   The Microsoft Workstation service
  62.            *   An appropriate network adapter device driver
  63.            *   A supported protocol (either NetBEUI or TCP/IP)

  70.         To verify that you have the prerequisite components installed:
  71.  
  72.            1.  Click Start button, point to Settings, and then click
  73.                Control Panel.
  74.            2.  Double-click Network.
  75.            3.  On the Services and Protocols pages you can view the
  76.                components that are currently installed.

  80.     3.0 Installation

  83.         To install:

  85.            1.  Log on to the system with a user name that has administrator
  86.                privileges.
  87.            2.  Click Start button, point to Settings, and then click
  88.                Control Panel.  The Control Panel window is displayed.
  89.            3.  Double-click Network.  The Network notebook is displayed.
  90.            4.  Click the Services tab.
  91.            5.  Click Add.  The Select Network Service window is displayed.
  92.            6.  Click Have Disk.  The Insert Disk window is displayed.
  93.            7.  Type the directory path to the IBM Networks Primary Logon
  94.                Client installation files, and then click OK.
  95.                The OEM Option window is displayed.
  96.                Note: You can install the IBM Networks Primary Logon Client
  97.                      from a local or shared network drive (for example,
  98.                      A:\ or d:\IBMNT), or from a UNC network path (for
  99.                      example, \\DEPT_SERVER\IBMNT)
  100.            8.  Click IBM Networks Primary Logon Client for Windows NT, and
  101.                then click OK.  After the files are copied, the IBM Networks
  102.                Client Properties notebook is displayed.
  103.            9.  Click General tab.  All of the domain servers that were
  104.                located by the network are listed in the Domain/Cell name list.
  105.                DCE Cells will not be included in this list.
  106.           10.  From the Domain/Cell name box, do one of the following:
  107.                 o Click the down arrow to display a list of the locations,
  108.                   and then select one.
  109.                 o Type the name of the default logon location.  This could be
  110.                   a IBM OS/2 Warp Server or LAN Server domain, DCE Cell,
  111.                   Windows NT Server domain, or standard SMB domain.
  112.           11.  Click OK.  The Network notebook is displayed.
  113.           12.  Click Close.  The Network Settings Change window is displayed.
  114.           13.  Click Yes.  Your system is restarted.

  126.         4.1  Logging On

  128.              To log on:
  129.  
  130.              1.  After completing the installation process, restart your
  131.                  Windows NT workstation. The Log On Information window
  132.                  is displayed.
  133.              2.  In the User name box, type the user ID that you want to
  134.                  use to log on.
  135.              3.  In the Password box, type the password for this workstation.
  136.              4.  In the Domain box, do one of the following:
  137.                    o Select the arrow to display a list of domains, and
  138.                      then select one.  If the list is empty or the domain
  139.                      that you want to use to log on is not listed, click
  140.                      Discover. The network is searched for available domains
  141.                      and the list is updated with all the Windows NT and
  142.                      OS/2 Warp Server domains that the network finds.
  143.                    o Type the name of the location where you want to log on to.
  144.              5.  Click OK to start the authentication of your IBM Networks
  145.                  Client user ID and password.

  148.        4.2  Starting the IBM Networks Client

  150.              To start the IBM Networks Client:
  151.  
  152.              1.  Click Start button, point to Programs, and then point
  153.                  IBM Networks Client (Common).
  154.              2.  Click IBM Networks Client.
  155.  
  156.               Note: You can use Windows NT Network Neighborhood to view and
  157.                     connect network resources.

  159.         4.3  Displaying the Users Guide

  161.              To view the users guide, do the following:
  162.  
  163.              1.  Click Start button, point to Programs, and then point
  164.                  IBM Networks Client (Common).
  165.              2.  Click Users Guide.

  173.     5.0 Additional Considerations

  176.         5.1  Security
  177.  
  178.              There is a new group RoamingUsers that has been created to
  179.              allow the Primary Logon Client to control how user accounts are
  180.              handled during logon.
  181.  
  182.              For accounts that are in the RoamingUsers group (accounts
  183.              created dynamically by the Primary Logon Client are automatically
  184.              added to this group):
  185.              o  they will be removed from any groups they are a member of
  186.                 prior to logon (except for the RoamingUsers group)
  187.              o  they will be added to their domain or cell groups
  188.              o  their password may be automatically synchronized with their
  189.                 network password during the logon process (if necessary)
  190.  
  191.              For accounts that are not in the RoamingUsers group:
  192.              o  the Primary Logon Client will not modify their group
  193.                 membership
  194.              o  their passwords will not by synchronized with their network
  195.                 password if it becomes unsynchronized
  196.  
  197.              Installation of the Primary Logon Client does not migrate user
  198.              accounts to become roaming user accounts.  If resource access is
  199.              based on local group membership, access rights should be changed
  200.              to include domain or cell groups that the user is a member of.

  203.         5.2  Miscellaneous
  204.  
  205.              o "Logon failed (rc = 258)"
  206.                If you see this message, a timeout occurred processing the
  207.                request.
  208.  
  209.              o "The system could not log you on.  Your network account and
  210.                password are correct, but your local account password is out
  211.                of sync.  Contact your system administrator to synchronize
  212.                your passwords."
  213.  
  214.                If you see this message, the local account is not marked as
  215.                a roaming user (see Section 5.1).  This message will occur
  216.                if the local password is not the same as the network password,
  217.                if the local account has expired or been disabled, or if the
  218.                local password has expired.
  219.  
  220.                To correct the problem, the local administrator must either:
  221.  
  222.                1) Make the account a roaming user.
  223.                2) Synchronize the network and local password for the user, or
  224.                   re-enable the account.

  234.     6.0 Removing IBM Networks Client

  237.         To remove IBM Networks Client:
  238.  
  239.            1.  Follow the steps for logging on to the system and use a
  240.                user ID that has administrator privileges.
  241.            2.  Click Start button, point to Settings, and then click
  242.                Control Panel.
  243.            3.  Double-click Network.  The Network notebook is displayed.
  244.            4.  Click Services tab.
  245.            5.  From the Network Services list, click IBM Networks Primary
  246.                Logon Client.
  247.            6.  Click Remove.
  248.            7.  Click Yes.
  249.            8.  Click Close.
  250.            9.  Restart your system.
  251.           10.  When your system has restarted, you must again log on with
  252.                a user name that has administrator privilege to complete the
  253.                update of Registry entries and the removal of the IBM
  254.                Networks Client files.
