This window displays a list of the errors that have been logged for a
workstation. To view additional information about a specific error log entry,
select an error in the list.
Column Information
Program
The name of the program or service that encountered the error. For example,
NETLOGON.
Date
The date when the error occurred.
Time
The time when the error occurred.
Message
The text of the error message.

The error log is a record of problems that have occurred on a workstation
during network operation.

Select this menu-bar choice to view any server log and to change the size of
that server log.
Menu Summary
Select server
Enables you to select to view the log at a different server
Maximum size
Enables you to change the default maximum size of the log list you are
viewing. This change is only effective during this session.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. LAN Server Audit Log Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window displays the events that have occurred in the network. You can use
auditing for security reasons or to keep track of resource usage.
To view additional information about a specific audit log entry, select an
event in the list.
Column Information
User ID
The identification of the user who caused the audit log entry
Event
The name of the event that caused the audit log entry
Date
The date when the event that caused the audit log entry occurred
Time
The time when the event that caused the audit log entry occurred

Select this menu choice to display an alphabetic listing of help topics.
To use the help index, do one of the following:
o Scroll through the list and double-click on any topic to display its help
information
o Select the topic using the arrow key and press Enter.
To search through the help index for a specific topic:
1. From the Services menu-bar choice, select Search.
2. In the Search for field, type the word or phrase you want to search for.
3. Select Index.
4. Select Search.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. General Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this menu choice to display information about how to use a product
window and, if applicable, the tasks you can perform in the window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Using Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Help is available when you do the following:
o Select Help from the menu of an object
o Select Help in a notebook
o Select Help on the title bar icon of an OS/2 or DOS session
o Select the Help push button
o Press F1 in a product window that has a Help choice on a menu bar
When you are within the help system, pressing Esc returns you to the previous
help window. If there is no previous help window, pressing Esc returns you to
the active product window.
The help you get is determined by what is highlighted on the product window
when you request help.
For example, if you request help while a menu-bar choice is highlighted, you
get specific information about that choice. If you request general help from a
help window, general information is displayed about the menu-bar choice and
menus that are available in the help facility.
Help is available for:
o Pop-up menus
o Title bar icons
o Program menu-bar choices
o Entry fields
o Push buttons
o Settings or fields on notebook pages
Every help window has a menu-bar that contains Services, Options, and Help
choices.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Keys Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this menu choice to display a list of key assignments for an object or a
product. You can use keys, key combinations or mnemonic to perform many
actions.
When a plus sign (+) joins two key names, use them together. Press and hold the
first key, press the second key, and then release them together.
To select a menu-bar choice using the mnemonic, hold down the Alt key and type
the mnemonic for the choice you want. To close the pull-down menu, press the
Alt key.
To select a menu choice or push button using the mnemonics, type the mnemonic
for the choice you want.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Mnemonic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A mnemonic is a single underlined character available on menu-bar choices,
pull-down choices, and push buttons.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Keys Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The log utility recognizes 3 special keys:

Use this window to view additional information about an error log entry.

This field shows the error number for the error that is displayed.

This field shows the name of the program or service that encountered the error.
For example, NETLOGON.

Use this window to view additional information about an audit event.

Use this window to sort the entries in the error log.

Select one radio button to identify the order that you want to use to sort the
error log entries.
Oldest first
Displays the oldest error message first and the newest error message last
Newest first
Displays the newest error message first and the oldest error message last
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Group by Program Reporting Error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this check box to group the error messages in the error log by the
program that reported the error.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OK ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this push button to accept the information contained in this window and
to close it.
If you made changes to the information in the window, the changes are applied
before the window is closed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this push button to ignore the information contained in this window and
to close it.
If you made changes to the information in the window, the changes are not saved
before the window is closed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Sort Audit Log ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this window to sort the entries in the audit log.

Select one radio button to identify the order that you want to use to sort the
audit log entries.
Oldest first
Displays the oldest audit entry first and the newest audit entry last
Newest first
Displays the newest audit entry first and the oldest audit entry last

Select one or more check boxes to group the audit log entries before they are
sorted.
User ID
Groups the entries in the audit log by user ID before they are sorted
Audit event
Groups the entries in the audit log by type of audit event before they are
sorted
If you select both check boxes, the entries are grouped first by user ID, then
by type of audit event, and then sorted in the order you selected in the Order
field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Error Log Size ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this window to change the maximum size of the error log at the selected
server. When you change this value, it is only in effect for the current
session.
To permanently change this value, update the maximum error log size in
IBMLAN.INI.

Type the maximum size of log you want at the selected server.
Maximum size: 32767 KB

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Audit Log Size ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this window to change the maximum size of the audit log at the selected
server. When you change this value, it is only in effect for the current
session.
To permanently change this value, update the maximum audit log size in
IBMLAN.INI.

Type the maximum size of log you want at the selected server.

Use this window to select the output device you want to use to print the log.

Type the name of the printer port or printer queue that you want to use to
print the log.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Select Server ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this window to select to view a log from another server. To view logs that
are remote, you must have administrative authority.
To change to a different server, do one of the following:
o In the Set server to field, type the name of the server.
o From the Server list box, select a server.

This field displays the name of the local workstation. To change to another
server, type its name in this field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Server ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This list contains the active servers in your domain that you can select.
To change to the server, select a name in the list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Starting LSERROR ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You specified an incorrect starting parameter.
Action: To start the Error log utility on the local workstation, type:
LSERROR
To start the Error log utility on the remote server, type:
LSERROR \\servername
where servername is the name of the remote server.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Starting LSAUDIT ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You specified an incorrect starting parameter.
Action: To start the Audit log utility, type:
LSAUDIT
To start the Audit log utility on the remote server, type:
LSAUDIT \\servername
where servername is the name of the remote server.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Incorrect Server Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You typed an incorrect server name.
Action: Type the correct name or select a name from the list.
Type 1 to 15 alphanumeric characters to specify the name by which the server is
known on the LAN. The first character cannot be numeric, and the last
character cannot be a dollar sign ($). Some special characters are not valid.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Not Enough Memory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The Log utility could not access enough memory to retrieve the
information.
Action: Stop one or more applications. Then, try the operation again.
If the problem persists, ensure that the MEMMAN statement in the CONFIG.SYS
file specifies swapping, for example:
MEMMAN=SWAP
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Server Information Unavailable ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The Log utility could not obtain a list of available servers.
Action: Ensure that the domain controller is active. Then, try the operation
again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Authority Needed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You are not logged on as an administrator or a user with operator
privileges.
Action: Log on with a user ID that identifies you as an administrator or a
user with operator privileges for the domain to which the server belongs.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Share Limit Exceeded ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The request was not accepted by LAN Server because the limit on the
share has been exceeded. There are too many administrators logged on to the
domain.
Action: Try the operation later.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Server Name Not Found ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You typed the name of a server that is not defined or active on the
network.
Action: Type a new server name or select a name from the list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Server Name Does Not Exist ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The server name you specified is not a valid server.
Action: Type a new server name or select a name from the list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Unknown Error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: An unknown error occurred. Additional information is provided in the
error text.
Action: To retrieve additional information about the error, type one of the
following at an OS/2 command line:
HELP NETxxxx
HELP SYSxxxx
where xxxx is the number specified in the message.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for User Account not found ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The user account cannot be found on the domain controller for the
specified server.
Action: Logon with a user ID that exists on the domain of which the selected
server is a member.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for OS/2 error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: An OS/2 error occurred. The message displays the error number returned
from the OS/2 program.
Action: To retrieve additional information about the error, at an OS/2 command
line, type:
HELP SYSxxxx
where xxxx represents the error number specified in the message.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for NET error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: A NET error occurred. The message displays the error number returned
from the LAN Server program.
Action: To retrieve additional information about the error, at an OS/2 command
line, type:
HELP NETxxxx
where xxxx represents the error number specified in the message.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Thread Start Failure ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The utility could not start another thread.
Action: End some of the active programs and try again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for No Record Selected ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You did not select a log entry before selecting to view details about
an entry.
Action: Select a log entry by double-clicking on an entry with the pointing
device or moving the cursor to the entry and pressing Enter.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for File Name Required ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: A file name is required for this function.
Action: Type a file name and press Enter.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Printer Port Required ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: A printer port name is required for this function.
Action: Type a printer port name and press Enter.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Server Not Available ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The server specified as an input parameter cannot be accessed. Either
the name of the server is not valid or the server is not active.
Action: If the name is not valid, to specify a valid server name, select:
1. Options from the menu bar. The Options pull-down is displayed.
2. Select server. The Select Server window is displayed.
If the name is valid, ensure that the server is active. Then, perform the
preceding steps 1 and 2.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Requester Not Active ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The requester must be active before an audit log can be viewed.
Action: To continue:
1. Start the requester from another OS/2 session.
2. Select Yes on the message.
To end LSAUDIT, select No on the message.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Clear Log ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: You have selected to clear the log. Clearing the log removes all data
from the log.
Action: To clear the log, select Yes.
To leave the data in the log, select No.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Size Out of Range ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The specified size is incorrect. The maximum log size is 32767KB; the
minimum log size is 2KB.
Action: Specify a log size within the correct range or select Cancel to retain
the current log size.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Size Out of Range ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The specified size is incorrect. The maximum log size is 65535KB; the
minimum log size is 1KB.
Action: Specify a log size within the correct range or select Cancel to retain
the current log size.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Message Not Found ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cause: The message text for the error could not be located. This could be
caused by one of the following situations:
o If the error log is located at a remote server, that server may be at a
higher release level.
o The error was logged by a API program.
o The error is caused by an OS/2 error.
Action: Take one of the following actions:
o If the error log is at a remote server, then run LSERROR at that server.
o Note the program that reported the error. If it is one for which you have
separate documentation, refer to the documentation for determining the cause
of the error.
o Note the number of the error. Low number errors are usually caused by an
OS/2 error. Many of these errors indicate problems in the program reporting
the error. They may be associated with other log entries by that program.
