  18. Description

  21. Banner/2 is a UNIX-style Banner command for OS/2.  It
  22. prints the words input as arguments in big text letters
  23. using asterisks.  Each expression is printed on one line.
  24. Expressions longer than 9 characters are split.
  25. It is fully-operational.
  26.  
  27. Each argument must be delimited in quotes (") if they
  28. contain whitespaces (" "), circumflexes (^), or
  29. relations; (<) and (>), or (|).  A quote can be printed
  30. within the argument using \".  You may need to print a
  31. \ using '\\'.
  32.  
  33. In this release, Banner/2 now supports European, Greek,
  34. and some block characters. It has been revamped into
  35. an OS/2 PM version. See BAN2.INF in the OS2
  36. subdirectory for information specific to this version.
  37.  
  38. Command-line OS/2 and DOS versions are also provided,
  39. as well as a Windows 3.1 port. Look in the CMDLINE
  40. subdirectory.

  42. Banner/2 is intended to be used by anyone who wants
  43. to liven up any text. Some examples are -
  44.  
  45.   - A large email signature
  46.   - Email messages; why SHOUT when you can SCREAM?
  47.   - Designing printer/fax cover pages
  48.   - Text file layout, like title pages
  49.   - Web page text (by enclosing the banner in <PRE> .. </PRE> tags)
  50.   - Incorporating banners into software
  51.   - and generally, impressing your friends and family.

  61. Place the executables of the version you desire,
  62. into your path. For example copy to
  63.  
  64.   C:\DOS      - For the DOS version (BANDOS.EXE)
  65.   C:\WINDOWS  - For the Windows version (BANWIN.EXE)
  66.   x:\OS2\APPS - For the OS/2 version (BANNER.EXE)

  68. The information files can be safely deleted (but not
  69. when distributing; see License agreement section).

  71. In Windows 3.1/95/NT, you may create a shortcut/icon
  72. to WINBAN.EXE.

  82. Banner operates by using phrases, passed in as arguments.
  83. To use Banner/2 for Windows, you will need to enter
  84. the phrases as arguments to the shortcut/icon.
  85. Each phrase appears on one line.

  87. Some examples are -

  89.   Banner "Hello, world!"    - Prints a 'Hello, world!' banner on one line
  90.   Banner Hello, world!        - Prints a 'Hello, world!' banner on separate lines

  92. To see the output one screen at a time, use 'more' -
  93.  
  94.   Banner This is a very long phrase | more

  96. To redirect the output to a printer (or port),

  100. To redirect the output to the file 'outfile.txt',

  106. Limitations
  107. ___________

  110. \ and " cannot be printed consecutively since they are interpreted
  111. as a ". Use \" for a quote, and \\ for a backslash.
  112.  
  113. The <CTRL><J> character within an phrase stops ALL
  114. characters following it from being read.
  115.  
  116. The default command shell resolution is the only one
  117. supported (80 characters across).  Smaller resolutions may
  118. result in distorted output.
  119.  
  120. The DOS and Windows versions are mere
  121. ports of the OS/2 version. They may exhibit
  122. problems; European characters don't seem to be detected,
  123. and the Windows version uses a different font,
  124. so some characters appear incorrect. These problems
  125. will be solved in a future version.

  132. Stellar-X Pty Ltd releases Banner/2 as FREEWARE,
  133. for all personal and commercial use.
  134. Technical support is provided.

  136. The original archive must be distributed intact.
  137. This includes all text files and versions.
  138. The archive may be freely distributed electronically,
  139. or on compilation CD-ROMs.

  141. However, I do not
  142. guarantee the software's reliability.  Any damage or loss
  143. incurred as a result of this software is the
  144. responsibility of Stellar-X.
