The OS/2 2.0 Product Showcase
By the end of 1992, there were over 1,000 OS/2 2.0 specific applications
available worldwide - all exploiting the power of the 32-bit operating
system. This number will grow rapidly as new applications are developed
and thousands of existing OS/2 1.x applications are migrated to OS/2 2.0.
This OS/2 2.0 Product Showcase, which gives a graphical description of a
selection of some of the applications for OS/2 2.0, covers a broad range
of products designed to meet business and development requirements.
Products range from spreadsheets to databases and multimedia to Computer
Aided Design.
For a more comprehensive list of applications for OS/2 2.0 take a look at
the .OS/2 2.0 Exploiting Applications Solutions Directory, a copy of which
can be obtained from your local IBM representative (Quote Order Number
G362-0029-03) or direct from the publishers: Graphics Plus Inc, 640
Knowlton Street, Bridgeport, CT 06608, USA. Fax: (203) 368 9100.
If you have an OS/2 2.0 32-bit application which you would like to see
included in the Product Showcase, please contact:

About the Product Showcase
The OS/2 2.0 Product Showcase was created on behalf of the IBM OS/2
Developers Assistance Program by:

The Product Showcase is a binary file created by compiling a scripted
ASCII text file, using: OS/2 2.0 Information Presentation Facility (IPF)
Tag Language and Compiler. The resulting on-line document requires OS/2
2.0 (or later) to operate, because it uses the OS/2 VIEW.EXE command to
access the file. This is the same command used to display the online OS/2
Command Reference.
IBM, OS/2, Operating System/2 and Presentation Manager are registered

are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. All other trademarks are

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Bridging the Development Gap ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Bridging the
Development Gap
The success of OS/2 2.0 and its applications is largely due to the strong
partnership between IBM and software developers. The IBM OS/2 Developer
Assistance Program (DAP), available throughout Europe, Middle East and
Africa, provides a broad range of joint support and marketing programs to
help the design, development, publicity and sale of OS/2 2.0 application
products. The DAP targets developers who are working on products for
commercial release and is an umbrella for a comprehensive set of services.
IBM invites OS/2 developers to 'bridge the development gap', and move into
the fast lane of OS/2 2.0 software development.
Thousands of DOS and Windows applications are now running on the OS/2
platform, and many have been migrated to OS/2 2.0's 32-bit platform, aided
and encouraged by a variety of IBM marketing and support programs for the
software developer, brought together in the OS/2 DAP. If you are considering
the move to OS/2, here are some of the ways IBM can help.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Technical Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Technical Support
We have a variety of formal and informal programs to help you create state of
the art, best selling graphical user applications. Most of our support is
open to to all commercial OS/2 developers, although some restrictions may
apply. Whatever your technical needs in writing your OS/2 applications, we
are ready to help you find the answer.
Our technical support, as well as other information of interest to OS/2
developers, is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week through our
on-line support system. Here you can find databases on many OS/2 areas, and
individual responses to your questions are given by our technical experts.
Of course, you can communicate also with other DAP program members and
exchange ideas. Our network is able to put you in touch with your fellow
OS/2 application developers, if you so wish.
Our DAPTOOLS electronic repository provides a collection of many IBM
developed OS/2 tools to support you in developing your applications. Sample
code is available in many cases to help you gain the necessary know-how. In
addition to the core technical support areas, we also carry the latest IBM
announcement letters, newsflashes, and a wide variety of other information on
OS/2.
The DAP does not stop at electronic support. We provide many items to our
members on CD-ROM to help you create the many new and exciting OS/2
applications that you are working on.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Technical Seminars ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Technical Seminars
Technical seminars are held several times per year in different countries and
the DAP program provides information to members on the dates and venues.
These seminars are an excellent way to learn about the latest developments in
OS/2 and talk directly with the IBM developers themselves.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OS/2 Migration Workshops ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Migration Workshops
IBM offers DAP members the chance to participate in intensive, hands-on
workshops that facilitate the task of migrating your applications to the OS/2
environment. The workshops combine classroom lectures with extensive lab
sessions and are designed to accomplish much of the porting of your
application during the one week period. The technical assistance, hardware
and software needed for porting are all provided at the workshop. All you
need to do is bring your source code. Don't miss this opportunity to get a
headstart with your new OS/2 32-bit applications.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OS/2 Early Code Programs ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Early Code Programs
These programs give developers an opportunity to test new OS/2 versions with
their own programs and also make available other selected beta versions of
IBM's own OS/2 applications. Developers participating in the early code
programs provide valuable feedback to IBM on the compatibility of their DOS,
Windows and 16-bit and 32-bit OS/2 applications, while getting a headstart on
new OS/2 features.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Marketing Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Marketing Support
The IBM/Developer partnership for OS/2 does not end with bits-and-bytes
technical support. When the development of your OS/2 product is finished,
the real challenge awaits ... reaching the potential customers who seek the
solution you provide.
We have a variety of marketing programs to help you market your OS/2 product.
Most are free but others are available at a nominal charge to help cover
costs.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OS/2 Compatability Logos ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Compatability Logos
Tell your customers that your application runs on OS/2 by making use of the
OS/2 compatible logo. Simply test your application on OS/2 Version 2, be it
a OS/2, DOS or Windows product, against IBM-supplied test suites. If you
pass the tests, you will then receive IBM authorisation to use the OS/2
compatible logo in your marketing material, giving your customers further
confidence in your product.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OS/2 Award ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Award
When you have started shipping your OS/2 2.0 application to your customers,
we would like to recognise your achievement and support for the OS/2 2.0
platform. We will present early OS/2 2.0 developers with an IBM OS/2 award,
which can be used in marketing activities to publicise this recognition and
appreciation from IBM.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> OS/2 Joint Developer Events ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Joint Developer Events
IBM will participate in selected software developer and user events to
demonstrate OS/2 2.0 and provide guest speakers. We participate in many
major trade shows to publicise our support programs, listen to our
developers, and promote OS/2 to PC users. Developers are invited to join us
in demonstrating their OS/2 products, provided that space is available.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Using the OS/2 2.0 Product Showcase ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting Words and Graphics
Throughout the OS/2 2.0 Product Showcase you will be expected to select
various words and graphics (hyperlinks). Select means to point and double
click on a word (hypertext) or graphic (hypergraphic) using the mouse.
(You can also use the <TAB> key to move between links, pressing <ENTER> to
activate the one you want).
Hyperlinks indicate that more information is available, either in the form
of a pop-up window, or another section. A hypergraphic toolbar is used to
help you move from one section of the Showcase to another.
A graphic that contains a link can be identified by the heavy black border
that is displayed when you click once with the mouse on that graphic. When
you first viewed this page the red arrow on the tool bar was displaying
just such a border. Text that contains a link is highlighted in green.
Almost all of the graphics in this showcase are selectable. The main
introductory graphic for each product contains a link to further
information - any further graphics may also contain links.
To continue forward, point to and double click on the green arrow on the
tool menu at the top of the page.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Legato - Office Tools ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Legato brings together five essential office tools to give a new type of
working environment: an electronic workspace where everything
inter-relates.
Legato is easy to learn and use, so it is appropriate for everyone, from
the experienced user to the occasional or first-time user.
With Legato you can have many documents open at once so you can skip
rapidly between operations on several types of document, rapidly
accelerating output.
Legato really shows its paces when you use the hotlinks between the five
tools to update work. Using a hotlink, data copied across always reflects
the latest status of the original. Legato exploits Object Linking and
Embedding (OLE) to the full so changes in a spreadsheet are indicated in a
chart, and the text document where the chart has been pasted.
Legato can recognise and convert spreadsheets like Excel and Lotus 1-2-3,
graphics in PCX format and scanned images in TIFF format as well as common
database file formats like DBS, CSV and TSV using its comprehensive
import/export capability.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ORACLE Server - Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ORACLE Server for OS/2 2.0 incorporates a number of new components for
improved performance in the OS/2 2.0 environment, new data loading
facilities, National Language Support and a C precompiler for building
32-bit applications:
SQL Loader is the Oracle utility for loading non-ORACLE data into an
ORACLE RDBMS. The direct load option of SQL Loader 1.1 allows for even
faster loading of structured data files.
Nine European languages are now supported for the reporting of status
and error messages.
ORACLE Server provides the ability to write DOS, Windows and OS/2
SQL-embedded C applications using Oracle's C precompiler product. V2.0
contains OS/2 PRo C which now allows you to build SQL-embedded
applications that take advantage of OS/2 2.0s improved architecture.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ORACLE Server ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ORACLE Server for OS/2 2.0 enables application developers to combine the
industry-proven features of ORACLE with the performance enhancements of
OS/2 2.0.
ORACLE Server for OS/2 contains the same Relational Database Management
System which runs identically over 85 different hardware platforms.
ORACLE's scalability lets you structure client-server database systems
which meet your business needs by adding low cost PC servers to existing
local area networks.
As a 32-bit application, ORACLE Server utilises the performance-boosting
features of OS/2 to provide greater performance. In addition ORACLE Server
ensures a high performance for both transaction processing and decision
support applications through unique ORACLE features.
ORACLE Server increases throughput and decreases response time with its
unique Transaction Execute and row-level locking capabilities. Transaction
Execute boosts performance by batching frequently used transactions in a
single call to the database. This minimises communication bottlenecks
between client and server, increasing throughput and lowering network
traffic. Row-level locking minimizes contention among users by locking
records at the row level rather than by locking entire pages or tables. As
a result more users are able to simultaneously access data without waiting
for another user to finish a transaction. Row-level locking is especially
beneficial to systems running on-line transaction processing (OLTP)
applications.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> AM - Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
AM provides major new capabilities in several areas:
- performance
- CUA 91 Workplace support,
- new client-server integration tools
- general enhancements to AM's development environment and
capabilities
Both the AM development and execution environments have been converted to
32-bit processing. This means that some AM applications will offer
immediate performance improvements of upto 40%.
AM provides a whole set of programming options for the design and
development of true Workplace applications. These features enable
containers, notebooks, modeless windows and multiple primary windows. Fine
control of PM windows is provided by new window handling routines.
SQL database access is now enabled for IBM's DDCS/2 product, enabling
seamless access to SAA databases (DB2, SQL/DS, SQL/400) using both dynamic
and static SQL. Enhanced communications support includes a cross-protocol
communications handler for APPC, Named pipes and CICS for OS/2.
The AM development environment has been enhanced to provide new
capabiliites both for the user and the developer. A more sophisticated
event-handling engine has been created to allow new events to be
processed. Form, field and MLE processing functions have been enhanced. A
graphical 'logic analyser' helps to construct correct logic and program
structures and to help in debugging.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> AM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
DDCS/2 is part of IBM's DRDA strategy that enables SQL transactions to be
sent from an AM application to the SAA SQL databases. This means that
programmers can access DB2, for example, seamlessly without the need for
communications programming. AM is fully enabled for DDCS/2 both for
finished applications and for the programmer, so that they can review the
DB catalog and paste column names into the SQL statement.
More importantly, AM's SQL/Workbench product is a tool for the design,
generation, editing, testing, compilation and maintainance of
high-performance, secure Static SQL transactions, ideal for online
transaction processing systems. With SQL/Workbench, the AM developer can
develop and test in a LAN environment and switch to the host for
production.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Gpf - Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Gpf - GUI Programming Facility is a WYSIWYG graphical user interface
application development platform optimised for OS/2 PM programming. As a
3GL (C language) source code generator Gpf offers all the advantages of
hand coding native PM applications with the ease of use of a WYSIWYG
visual programming environment.
Gpf allows you to:
- draw objects as they should appear to the end user
- modify fonts and colours to customise standard controls
- attach built-in or custom logic to controls at creation time
- point and click to generate embedded SQL code to fill List and
Combo boxes or associated Entry Fields with table columns
- attach information messages and context sensitive help (IPF)
at creation time
- generate error free code
- easily re-enter and modify the design from the same WYSIWYG
editor
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Gpf ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
With Gpf, as windows, dialogues and PM controls are created, the design
hierachy is defined. Navigation code, custom logic and context sensitive
help are created and linked to objects as they are designed. From this
easy-to-learn and easy-to-use environment an application designer can
complete a new PM application in about one third of the time required
using conventional design techniques. In fact if the GUI design is
considered separately, a tenfold time saving is usual.

DIGITALK PARTS is a Parts Assembly and Reuse Tool Set technology that
enables very rapid application construction from prefabricated software
parts.
PARTS Workbench is the first in a series of PARTS products. It is a
complete application development environment for OS/2. It enables point
and click, graphical assembly and interconnection of parts. This makes it
possible to create many applications without programming. The PARTS
Workbench comes with over 60 ready-to-use visual and non-visual
application parts.
Distribution of resulting stand-alone applications is royalty free.
VISUAL PARTS include components that conform to IBM's CUA '91 interface
design standard including notebook, value set, dial pane and sliders.
Other parts include push button, drop down list, menu, text pane, check
box, combo box, picture field and many others.
NON-VISUAL PARTS provide the data access and computation for your
application. These include a Btrieve database file accessor, several data
structure parts, DDE client and DDE server connections, a DLL accessor,
disk accessor, file accessor, printer, file system interface and external
program launch pad.
PARTS are easily integrated and interchanged as files. Parts can be
located in OS/2 folders, or as components in the PARTS Catalog. Organise
them in any way that you want - drag and drop them between folders,
catalogs and your application. All visual and non-visual parts are
integrated with a standardised interface defined by messages and events.
Unlike conventional application development technologies this makes not
only easy assembly but reuse of parts possible.

PROCYON is an object-oriented software development environment produced
specifically for development and delivery PC's giving outstanding
performance on even 386 computers and excellent integration with the
operating system features offered by OS/2. The heart of the system is a
fast, compact implementation of Common Lisp which includes, as standard, a
Generational Garbage Collector that offers near real-time performance.
PROCYON produces runtime image requiring as little as 2MB of RAM.
As well as the Generational Garbage Collector, PROCYON has a wealth of
features including Foreign function interface, Meta Object Protocol,
Persistent Objects, Incremental Compilation and Intelligent Text Editor.
Full access to all OS/2 Presentation Manager functions is provided. DDE
and Foreign Function Interface lets PROCYON interact with other programs.
PROCYON code is portable between one platform and another. Products can be
maintained from a single set of source code. Common Graphics provides the
key to graphical portability - this high-level active layer avoids any

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Prominare Development System - Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Prominare Development System(TM) consists of four programs that greatly
aid the development process and comply with IBM's Systems Applications
Architecture definitions. The programs are developed for IBM's 32-bit OS/2
environment under Presentation Manager Version 2.0 and are fully 32-bit.
Just like a carpenters workbench that is made up of different tools like a
hammer, saw and vise, three programs make up the Prominare Development System
(PDS). They are: Prominare Builder(TM), Prominare Editor(TM), and Prominare
Designer(TM). A fourth program, Analyst Designer(TM), works in conjunction
with the PDS. Each is designed to simplify the aspects of building
applications thereby increasing a programmer's productivity so that he or she
can build applications for DOS, OS/2 text mode, OS/2 Presentation Manager and
Microsoft Windows regardless of the source languages being used. Prominare
Development System follows some of the principles outlined within the IBM
Systems Application Architecture AD/Cycle Concepts booklet.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Prominare Development System ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Prominare Builder is the foundation of the Prominare Development System and
allows the application programmer access to tools used to compile, edit and
debug application programs on a point and shoot basis. Prominare Builder
allows the programmer to edit a source file, set compiling characteristics,
compile and link a program without having to know various switches associated
with each tool or language being used. Within the IBM SAA AD/Cycle
guidelines, it falls under the Build/Test area.
Prominare Editor is a typical editor that can be used to create and edit
source language files. It works in conjunction with Prominare Builder when
Prominare Builder detects an error during a build session. The application
programmer can request immediate editing of the problem source file and
Prominare Editor will then display the source file, move to first error found
and display the error information, thereby allowing the programmer to easily
correct the error. If more than one error was found, the programmer can move
between each error to make corrections. Prominare Editor falls under the
Produce/Build/Test areas of AD/Cycle.
Prominare Designer is the third component of the Prominare Development
System. This program allows the application programmer to graphically design
a program for OS/2 Presentation Manager complete with menu's, accelerators,
strings, dialogs, custom resources and help tables. The program will create
the required Resource Script and source language files. Under AD/Cycle,
Prominare Designer falls under the Design and Produce areas. In conjunction
with this, the program is directly related to the Analyst Designer which
allows system designers or managers to design the program interface visually
instead of through flow diagrams or specifications. When used in conjunction
with Prominare Builder, a programmer would be able to design and build a
prototype quickly without having to create the necessary script and source
files by hand. Also, as work progresses on the project, changes can be made
to the final interface without damaging work already completed.
Analyst Designer is separate component from the Prominare Development System.
It is very similar to the Prominare Designer application except that it has
all programmer specific features removed. This program allows an analyst,
system designer or even a department manager to design an application with
the resulting prototype information then being relayed to the programmer for
further development.

Nikon II is a utility for capturing the displayed desktop or portions
thereof, and saving the image captured in a bitmap. Either the whole
desktop (screen contents), windows for selected applications, a selected
region or the contents of a window can be captured. The result can be
saved in the clipboard for subsequent pasting into another application,
printed at varying resolutions, stored on disk in a number of bitmap file
formats or a specified editor can be invoked for further processing of the
image.
Nikon II exists as an icon. A capture or 'snap' is initiated by
double-clicking on this icon. Alternatively, select Snap from the pop-up
system menu.
The type of capture, together with operational settings, can be changed by
single-clicking with the left or right mouse button and selecting Options
from the pop-up system menu.
If a delayed capture is specified, a count of the remaining seconds to the
capture will be shown below the Nikon II icon. Select Stop countdown to
terminate a delayed capture.
Once the capture is complete, the image will be sent to the selected
destination. A status of working indicates that processing of the image
is incomplete. The time for this processing will depend on the options
selected. Note that another capture can be initiated whilst in the working
status but processing and output of the second image is queued.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Pj2 3.1 - Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Pj2 is a 2D-3D CAD system, based on the OS/2 Presentation Manager. PJ2
provides several geometrical functions, powerful graphic editing
capabilities, a uniform 2D-3D environment and also allows associative
dimensioning, management of blocks, an internal database and macro
recorder.
Pj2 files can be exported in formats such as Postscript, HP Laserjet,
Epson and most OS/2 compatible formats. HPGD and Calcomp formats are also
available. DXF and IGES input/output formats give Pj2 a complete
compatability with the most popular software packages.
Pj2 3.1 heavily exploits features of OS/2 2.0 such as multithreading and
fast semaphores. Speed improvements of 30% - 80% (depending on the
specific function) in comparison with the 16-bit version has been
obtained).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Pj2 3.1 - Application Programming ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
In addition, Pj2 has been designed to supply high customisation
capabilities - one of its customisation tools is the PAK (Pj2 Application
Kit) library which allows access to Pj2's functions from within an
application.
Creating an application program with the PAK requires only standard
programming tools and can be written in C or C++. The program can then be
debugged with the debugger supplied with the development kit of the
language used. Presentation Manager functions can be added to an
application program by means of the PAK.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Position Master ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Position Master has been designed to provide a low cost, entry level
Position Keeping and Risk Management system running on a single user PC.
It will meet around 95% of the deal capture and position keeping needs of
FX and Money Market dealing operations in any dealing centre in the world.
Deal Capture has been designed for busy dealers. After 15 years of
watching how dealers work we believe we have unparalleled experience of
what they need.
Quite simply the technology must not get in the way of the technology
which is why we have focused on the widest choice of interchangeable
methods and made interacting with the system as instinctive as possible:
- when you use a keyboard then deal capture is as fast as you
can type
- you can use a tablet
- you can use point and click
- you can enter the full exchange rate or just the pips
Not only must the system be easy to use, it must also help. That
is why we have incorporated automatic 'What If' displays
immediate position updates, context sensitive calculators, deal
notes, counterparty notes, limit warnings, forward cash flow
displays, multiple deal entry and a unique Rates Mosaic.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Position Master ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Giving a rapid capture of a wide range of markets and instruments,
Position Master interfaces with external data feeds or data management
systems and uses this data to provide second by second risk monitoring and
position updates.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> JS-Print Manager 1.0 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
JS-PRINT is industrial software dedicated to the field of automated
product marking, coding, identification and material flow logistics. It is
a part CIM solution as well as a Computer Aided Quality control system. It
perfectly meets the requirements placed on production, distribution and
sales management in terms of logistics and automation. It serves equally
well to any type of producer and manufacturer. Even international
companies can benefit from the many functions offered by this software.
JS-PRINT covers all applications in the marking and identification of
products and goods by electronic periphery equipment. It gathers the
entire PPC data in a company ie production, article, order, transport and
distribution data, and connects it to the equipment used either in
production or distribution such as label printers, dispensers, Ink-jet
systems, bar code readers, hand held terminals and scales.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> JS Print Manager 1.0 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The software and its internal logic were both created to be independent of
equipment and trade names. Considerable flexibility for newly developed
technologies can thus be assured because the concept itself can be
expanded and made usable for any future type of equipment.
The application logic, the connectivity of the data for the equipment and
the possibilities for automating production or distribution sequences are
mostly open. The necessary logistics and appplication structures can be
selected so that they correspond to the needs of each user. The use of
standard industrial programs and structures as well as the capabilities
the user has to customise his configurations make him virtually
independent in his interaction with the system.
JS-PRINT is also equipped with an interface for integrating the system
into a higher order production control system. This makes it easy to
integrate JS-PRINT into an existing corporate data-processing strategy.

At some stage in their use of PCs most people have experienced losing
files and data - often through no fault of their own. Each time disaster
strikes, people make resolutions to take more backups. Unfortunately they
hardly ever keep these resolutions for long.
The aim of PSnS is to resolve this problem by backing up your files for
you. PSnS is designed to do the tedious job of performing backups. Once
you have set up PSnS most of its work will take place unnoticed, until, of
course, you have to restore lost files.
Another advantage of PSnS is that it is able to manage the storage of
backed up files on many different devices for example, diskettes and LANs,
saving you even more time.

SQUASH for OS/2 2.0 is a full 32-bit application. It also has support for
HPFS. Archive files created under one environment can be de-archived in
any of the other environments - de-archiving files with long names into a
non HPFS environment is handled by truncating the file name or by asking
the user to provide a new name.
SQUASH has been designed to give good compression ratios - typically 80% -
in the shortest possible time.
