ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Help for GetIT ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Introduction
GetIT is a tool which searches for text strings all over your system, allowing
a multitude of optional conditions. On top of this, GetIT includes a result
editor, which produces a file containing the relevant results of your search.
You can use the program to manage (open, move, copy or delete) the files you
find. But you can also use it to copy text from these files to a result file
(handy for students, journalists etc.). Naturally, the result file can be saved
or printed. GetIT is shareware, but not disabled in any way. I'm relying on
your honesty: if you like the program and wish to continue using it, please
register (for 15$US). See the readme file for details.
Using GetIT's main window
Search Strings
The 4 entry fields in the top row are for your text strings. You must fill in
at least one of them, the first on the left. This contains your initial search
string (eg. 'Warp'). The other three are connected to this field by the
conditions specified by the spin buttons next to them. There are three such
conditions: or, + and - . Connecting fields with the or condition stipulates
that a file must contain at least one of your search strings, whereas the other
two conditions are exclusive. The + option decrees that a file must also
contain the string following it to be included in the Result List/Container -
likewise, the - condition excludes all files containing a certain string.
Example
The following set of strings searches for all files containing the words
'Warp' and/or 'Windows', provided they also contain the term 'config.sys' but
not 'autoexec.bat':
Warp |or| Windows |+| config.sys |-| autoexec.bat
NOTE: You need not fill in all 4 fields, but you MUST state all your or
conditions before proceeding to the + and - options.
Further conditions
The next row of spin buttons lets you specify a time span for your search,
which relates to a file's date of origin. You must also choose a suffix ,
depending on the word processing program you use (eg. '.ctx' for Clearlook,
'.doc' for Winword, '.txt' for plain text files). If you wish, GetIT can
restrict your search to a single Drive and also to a specific directory (type
this in the appropriate entry field, without back-slashes - eg: files).
Launching the search
A search is started by pressing the Search button and will be prematurely
terminated if the Stop button is pressed. Press Clear to delete all entries and
start a new search.
Search results...
are displayed in the Container , List and Viewer. Both the Result Container
and the Result List can be used to switch between the files found during your
search. The file currently selected will appear in the Result Viewer - normally
displaying the passage of text containing the search string (NOTE: In rare
cases, this feature fails, owing to elaborate formatting by the word processing
application which created the file. Don't despair! The string is definitely
there - you'll just have to search for it manually, by moving up and down
within the text. Weird looking symbols in text passages shown by the Viewer can
be attributed to the same cause. Also, word processors have different ways of
handling non-English characters such as the German Umlaut - which may or may
not show up correctly.).
Manipulate a file found during a search...
by selecting its icon in the Container. Now press the right mouse button for a
popup menu or select the File menu on the menu bar. You can now open a file or
delete it from the system, copy or move it to the WPS for further manipulation.
Switch to the Editor...
by pressing the appropriate button. GetIT's Result Editor appears, displaying
the file currently contained in the Result Viewer. You can now copy relevant
passages from the files found during your search into a result file.

Using the Result Editor
The Result Source Window contains a file found during your search and
currently displayed in the Viewer of GetIT's main window. You can Find a
different passage in this file or go Back to the main panel to select a
different file by pressing the appropriate buttons. DRAG text from this window
to the Result File Window by marking it with the left mouse button, then
pressing the mouse's right button and keeping this depressed while moving the
mouse pointer down to that window. The text will then appear at the current
cursor position in the Result File Window.
Move text within your result file by marking it and pressing the Move button.
The selected passage will disappear - and reappear at a chosen position when
the button is pressed for the second time.
You can choose a Font for your result file by pressing the appropriate button.
Print or Save result files by pressing the respective buttons or using the File
menu.
