File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
Introduction
Before I was running LoraBBS I run Spitfire BBS (a DOS based BBS). For
Spitfire BBS there were 'only' 4 file-area managers, and they all had
the same kind of lay-out. That lay-out showed a lot of quality. It also
was (and still is) a real user-friendly interface.
When I switched to LoraBBS I tried a few file-area managers, but none
of them showed the quality, and had interface I was used to work with.
On that moment I wanted to write my own file manager for LoraBBS.
On april 7, 1995 I started writing File Master/2. Until now I really
liked the job, and I'm a little proud on the work I've delivered with
File Master/2.
Now it's up to you to tell me what you find of File Master/2. Remember,
File Master/2 is still in it's beta phase, so there can still be a
small bug somewhere. Please don't be angry, but report it to me.
I'd also appreciate it if you'd tell me what you think about File
Master/2, and what you thank could be a nice addition. Remember, you're
the one who uses File Master/2, and I want to give you a program that
you want to work with...

File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
Installation
To install File Master/2, you need to place all the files of the
distribution package into one directory (i.e. C:\FMASTER2). As you can
see, there are no executable files. But there are two ZIP files. One
called FM2_386.ZIP and the other FM2_486.ZIP. They both hold the
executable file of File Master/2.
FM2_386.ZIP holds the regular compiled version of File Master/2.
This version can manage up to 1024 files per file-area.
FM2_486.ZIP holds the 486 optimized version of File Master/2. This
version can manage up to 2048 files per file-area.
When you've placed the files in one directory, you need to create a
configuration file called FMASTER2.CFG. The configuration file is a
plain ASCII file, that can be created with any text editor.
For the configuration file you need to use a number of keywords. I will
explain them below.
LoraConfig
With this keyword you tell File Master/2 where the main configur-
ation of your LoraBBS is located. By default File Master/2 assumes
that the main LoraBBS configuration is located in C:\LORA\CON-
FIG.DAT.
(i.e. LoraConfig D:\LORA\CONFIG.DAT)
DefaultColor
This keyword should be followed by 2 numbers. The first holds the
color of the foreground, and the second holds the color of the
background.
The colors numbers that can be used are the standard ANSI color
codes. I assume you don't have them laying around somewhere, so
here they are listed.
ANSI color codes.
0 - Black 8 - Dark grey
1 - Blue 9 - Light blue
2 - Green 10 - Light green
3 - Cyan 11 - Light cyan
4 - Red 12 - Light red
5 - Magenta 13 - Light magenta
6 - Brown 14 - Yellow
7 - Light grey 15 - White
For the background colors 0 through 7 can only be used.
File Master/2 uses color 11 for the foreground, and 1 for the
background as default.
(i.e. DefaultColor 15 0)
-3-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
BarColor
Just like 'DefaultColor' this keyword should be followed by two
numbers too. With these two colors you define the color of the
selection bar. The foreground color is also used to mark the tagged
files.
The colors 14 and 3 are used as default colors.
(i.e. BarColor 8 0)
PopupColor
With this keyword you can define the color of the pop-up windows
that File Master/2 generates. Pop-up windows are used for the on-
line help system, small messages, and response requests.
This keyword also needs two numbers to define the colors that are
used. By default File Master/2 uses 15 and 4.
(i.e. PopupColor 15 0)
NoDesc
This option gives you the opportunity to set the prompt that File
Master/2 will give when no description is entered for a file. By
default File Master/2 will use '<No description available>'.
(i.e. NoDesc *Unknown*)
ZIP
Need I say more? This keyword tells File Master/2 what the command
is to ZIP a file. Because of the great variety of programs that can
create ZIP files, File Master/2 uses no default value for this one.
The program that you point at, must be in the PATH.
(i.e. ZIP ZIP.EXE)
unZIP
Just like the 'ZIP' keyword, except that this keywords points at
the un-ZIP command.
(i.e. unZIP UNZIP.EXE)
ARJ
Just like the 'ZIP' keyword. This keyword points to the ARJ com-
pression method. Remember that you use a program that knows how to
compress and de-compress ARJ files.
(i.e. ARJ ARJ.EXE)
RAR
Just like the 'ZIP' keyword. This keyword points to the RAR com-
pression method. Remember that you use a program that knows how to
compress and de-compress RAR files.
(i.e. RAR RAR.EXE)
-4-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
LZH
Just like the 'ZIP' keyword. This keywords points to the LZH
compression method. The compressor must know the Lha5 method.
(i.e. LZH LH2.EXE)
ArchiveShell
With this option you can enable the archive-shell in File Master/2.
This option is build, so you can examine the contents of the files
that are in your file-area.
The program you point to should be in the PATH. If the program is
not in the PATH, you should include the complete PATH, directly
followed by the filename of the program.
The compression shell you use should be familiar with the ZIP, ARJ,
RAR and LZH compression methods.
(i.e. ArchiveShell RAR.EXE)
JPG-View
When using this option, you will be able to view JPEG pictures in
the file-area's from File Master/2.
The program you point to should be in the PATH. If the program is
not in the PATH, you should include the complete PATH, directly
followed by the filename of the program.
(i.e. JPG-View C:\JOEVIEW\JOEVIEW.EXE)
The next options will be used when you use the command-line processor
that is build in File Master/2. If you don't use this option of File
Master/2 (which I doubt <G>), you don't need to configure them.
MaxLevel
This option hold the maximum level of the file-area that should be
included when using the command-line processor of File Master/2.
Because the levels of the file-area's are different on every BBS,
File Master/2 doesn't use a default value. Basicly this means that
when you don't use this keyword, File Master/2 won't do anything
when you use command-line processor.
The keyword should bel followed by the maximum level you want to be
included when use the command-line processor of File Master/2. You
can use the numeric value of the level, or the normal written
value, like LoraBBS does.
Following is a list of the written level, with their numeric
equivalent.
Twit 16
Disgraced 32
Limited 48
Normal 64

Asstsysop 160
Sysop 176
Hidden 192
(i.e. MaxLevel Extra)
AllFilesList
Using this option you tell File Master/2 where to create the list
of files, when using the 'FileList' option of the command-line
processor.
(i.e. AllFilesList D:\DOWNLOAD\ALLFILES.TXT)
NewFilesList
Using this option you tell File Master/2 where to create the list
of new files, when using the 'FileList' option of the command-line
processor.
(i.e. NewFilesList D:\DOWNLOAD\NEWFILES.TXT)
NewFilesDays
This option has to be used with the 'NewFilesList' keyword. The
'NewFilesDays' keyword defines the number of days a file is marked
by File Master/2 as new. Setting this number to zero means that no
list of new files is created.
(i.e. NewFilesDays 30)

The File Manager
When you start File Master/2 without any parameter, File Master/2 will
take you to the file manager. This file manager is build with you , as
user of File Master/2, in mind. Therefor File Master/2 has a very easy
and user-friendly interface.
File Master/2 holds also an on-line help system. Whenever you're in
need of a little help, you only need to press the F1 key, and your help
is there.
-7-

File-area selection
After you've started File Master/2 you'll see a list of available file-
area's within your LoraBBS.
If you've made your color configuration right, the first file-area will
be in a bar of a different color then the rest of the screen. This bar
is the file-area-selection bar. You can move this bar up and down, to
select the file-area you'd like to process.
To move the file-area-selection bar, you can use one of the following
keys.
Arrow-Down
Moves the file-area-selection bar one file-area down. If you're
already at the bottom of the screen, the file-area-selection bar
will stay there, and the file-area's will scroll up, until the last
file-area is reached.
Arrow-Up
Moves the file-area-selection bar one file-area up. If you're
already at the top of the screen, the file-area-selection bar will
stay there, and the file-area's will scroll down, until the first
file-area is reached.
Page-Down
Moves the file-area's to the next page. The file-area-selection bar
will stay on the place where it is. The file-area that was on the
bottom of the screen will appear again on the top of the screen.
When you reach the last page of file-area's, the file-area-selec-
tion bar will drop down to the last file-area available.
Page-Up
Moves the file-area's to the previous page. The file-area-selection
bar will stay on the place where it is. The file-area that was on
the top of the screen will appear again on the bottom of the
screen.
When you reach the first page of file-area's, the file-area-selec-
tion bar will jump to the first file-area available.
End
Drops down the file-area-selection bar to the last available file-
area on your system.
Home
Jumps the file-area-selection bar to the first available file-area
on your system.
-8-

Enter
When you press the 'Enter'-key, you will make your selection. When
copying/moving files, this will be the target file-area where the
files will be copied/moved to. Otherwise the selected file-area
will be loaded.
Esc
The Escape-key will leave the file-area selection. When you wanted
to copy/move a file, this process is aborted. When you were select-
ing a file-area to process, File Master/2 will ask you if you'd
like to exit File Master/2.
-9-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
File-area processing
When you've selected a file-area, File Master/2 will load the FILES.BBS
for you, and show it to you. Just like the file-area selection you'll
see a bar on your screen. This is the file-selection bar. You can move
this bar on the screen on the same way as you've done to select this
file-area.
Besides the direction keys to move the file-selection bar, there are a
lot of other command-keys. I will explain them below.
Enter
This key allows you to view and edit the description of the current
file. Pressing the 'Enter'-key will load internal editor. You can
use the editor also to view the complete description of the file.
Space
The SpaceBar tags and de-tags a file for batch-processing.
Batch-processing is a system that saves you lots of time. All you
need to do is tag all files you want to do the same command with,
and then give the command you'd like to be executed. In File
Master/2 the keys you need to press are the Alt-key and the key for
the command itself. When batch-processing is available for a
command, it is written directly under the explanation of the
command itself.
Similar to 'Space' is pressing the 'T'-key.
Alt-T
Tags all files in the current file-area.
Ctrl-T
De-tags all files in the current file-area.
C Copies the current file to an anther file-area.
(Alt-C is used for batch-processing)
M Moves the current file to an other file-area.
(Alt-M is used for batch-processing)
D Deletes the current file from both the FILES.BBS and from the
harddisk. Before the file is deleted, File Master/2 will ask you to
confirm that the file has to be deleted.
Similar to 'D' is pressing the 'Del'-key.
(Alt-D is used for batch-processing)
-10-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
R Removes the current file from the FILES.BBS. This option won't
delete the file from the harddisk. Just like the 'D'-key, File
Master/2 will ask you to confirm that the file has to be removed.
(Alt-R is used for batch-processing)
I Extracts the FILE_ID.DIZ from a compressed file, and loads it into
memory as the description of the file. You should remember that the
FILE_ID.DIZ will only be extracted from the compressed file if you
configured that kind of compression.
(Alt-I is used for batch-compression)
P Extracts the size (in pixels) of a picture. At this moment only the
JPEG standard is supported by File Master/2, but other picture
kinds will be supported in the future.
(Alt-P is used for batch-processing)
V Views the current picture. This option only works is you did
configure the program that is able to view the type of picture you
want to be displayed.
Keep in mind that File Master/2 shells to an external program.
Depending on your system, this might take a while.
A Shells to an archive shell. This option only works on the
configured compression types, and if you did configure an external
archive shell.
Keep in mind that File Master/2 shells to an external program.
Depending on your system, this might take a while.
F Sets the date of the current file to today.
(Alt-F is used for batch-processing)
? Gives you general information about the current file-area. Informa-
tion is given on the name, the total number of files and the total
size. And the number of tagged files with their size.
O Adopts orphan files, that are not yet in the FILES.BBS. When using
this option, all compressed files are scanned for an FILE_ID.DIZ,
and from the picture-size.
S This option sorts the FILES.BBS in any logic form. That means that
the FILES.BBS can be sorted on filename, date and size. All of them
ascending and descending.
A sub-menu will be shown with the following options.
F Sorts ascending on filename
S Sorts ascending on size
D Sorts ascending on date
^F Sorts descending on filename
^S Sorts descending on size
^D Sorts descending on date
The '^' means that the Ctrl key has to be pressed with the follow-
-11-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
ing key. (i.e. '^F' means 'Ctrl-F')
F2
Saves the FILES.BBS that is in memory to the harddisk.
Esc
Pressing the Escape-key will end the file-area processing. When
data has been changed, you will be prompted if the FILES.BBS would
be saved.
You will be returned to the file-area selection screen.
-12-

The description editor
Just like the file-area selection and the file-area processing, the
description editor uses the same keys to move your cursor through the
text of the file-description. There are however two differences... The
Home is used to get back to the beginning of the current line of
description, and the End key is used to go to the end of the current
line. Also the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys are a little different. You
would expect that the cursor would stay on the same position, but then
one line up or below. That's not true. The cursor is moved to the first
position of the new line.
And then there are two new defined keys. I think you'll know them
already. Those are the Arrow-Left and Arrow-Right. These keys will move
your cursor one position left or right.
When editing the description of the file, you can use all normal keys
you wish to use for the description. Two keys can only not be used.
These keys are Ctrl-Y and Alt-167.
Ctrl-Y is used to delete a complete line of description. The Alt-167
combination is used as the Carriage Return.
The description editor has also a few limits. This is to prevent that
File Master/2 uses too much memory, and that the user won't get a huge
description. The limitation is 1536 bytes (1.5Kb), or 100 lines, each
with a maximum of 250 characters. But I think that these limitations
aren't real limitations at all... For a file-description, you should
have enough room... <G>
-13-

The Command-line Processor
Besides the file manager, File Master/2 also holds a command-line
processor. The command-line processor allows File Master/2 to do a
number of routines, without the need of someone to tell how it has to
be done exactly. The command-line processor can be used for batch-
processing, for example in the nightly maintenance.
The command-line processor uses three basic elements. These are the
command, the option(s) and (if needed) an output indication.
To call the command-line processor from the OS/2 command-line, it would
look something like this:
FMASTER2.EXE [command] [option]..[option] [output]
The explanation of command, option and output will follow in this and
the following pages...
[command]
You can use the command only once on the command-line [command]. If you
use more than one command at a time on one command-line, File Master/2
will only execute the first command entered. [command] can be any of
the following.
Help
This command shows a small help to you. Displayed are only the
important things you should need to know about the command-line
processor. This the 'Help' command you can't use any of the options
that are available, or the output.
FileList
Using the 'FileList' command, File Master/2 will create a list of
all files available on you BBS, and a list of the new files, for
the last number of days you've configured in 'NewFilesDays'. The
list of all files will always be kept., even if there are no files
at all (is there a BBS without any files? <G>). The list of the new
files will be erased, when there are no new files to be reported.
Possible options to use:
Group:<x>[,<x>[-<x>]], CD, NoCD, Compress:<xxx>
You don't have to specify the [output] section, because the results
are already mentioned in the File Master/2 configuration file.
BestDownload
With this command you create a top 10 bulletin of the best down-
loaded files. The created bulletins are made in ASCII, ANSI and
Avatar.
Possible options to use:
Group:<x>[,<x>[-<x>]], CD, NoCD
-14-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
With this command you must specify the [output] section. This
section should contain the basic part of the bulletin that is
created (i.e. C:\LORA\DISPLAY\TOP10).
[option]
Besides the commands, File Master/2 also knows a number of options, to
give directions to the commands. The directions that these options give
are numerous, and they are explained below.
Group:<x>[,<x>[-<x>]]
This option assigns a group, or number of groups you'd like to
process for the command. LoraBBS knows up to 999 groups, and File
Master/2 supports them all.
You can use the 'Group:' option as follows:
Group:4 Uses file-group 4 only
Group:4,7 Uses file-groups 4 and 7
Group:10-13 Uses file-groups 10 tru 13
Group:4,10-13 Uses file-groups 4 and 10 tru 13
These examples are simple. If you'd like you can even assign
'Group:4,10-13,500-525,900', and File Master/2 will process the
file-groups as you've specified them.
NOTE: This option is only available for registered users of File
Master/2.
NoCD
With this option File Master/2 won't process the CD-ROM file-
area's. The file-area's must have the CD-ROM flag set in LoraBBS to
be a CD-ROM file-area.
NOTE: This option is only available for registered users of File
Master/2.
CD
This option is opposite to the 'NoCD' option. The 'CD' option will
force File Master/2 to process the file-area's that are on the CD-
ROM.
NOTE: This option is only available for registered users of File
Master/2.
Compress:<xxx>
The compress option is only used with the 'FileList' command. The
'Compress:' option causes the both the file-lists to be compressed.
The <xxx> has to be replaced with one of the four compression
methods that is supported by File Master/2, and it can be ZIP, ARJ,
LZH or RAR
-15-
File Master/2 version 0.25 Beta
[output]
The output contains the directory or complete filename where the
results of File Master/2 have to be placed. The contents of the output
for the commands that use the output statement on the command-line is
already explained with the explanation of that commend.
-16-

User agreement
With the use of File Master/2 you to hold the author harmless for all
damages done directly or indirectly by File Master/2 to your computer
system, software and other data, your common sense and health and all
other things that File Master/2 could otherwise do harm to.
File Master/2 is provided as-is. This means that File Master/2 holds no
warranty of any kind. The only thing I can please you with is that
possible problems on your side might also result on the side of the
author, because he's using File Master/2 too.
It is strictly forbidden to de-compile, dis-assemble, or use any other
kind of reverse engineering on File Master/2. Changing any of the files
in the distribution package is also forbidden.
The distribution package of File Master/2 holds a Authentic Verificat-
ion. Please note it. When you've unZIPped the distribution package with
PKWare's PKUNZIP you should see that behind every file a '-AV' comment
is placed. When the file is completely decompressed you should see the
following comment:
Authentic files Verified! # TZD532
Alexander Erne
If you don't see this comment, or the '-AV' comment, the package you
have is not the original distribution package. Please contact the
author in that case, and upload the package you have to his BBS (see
further under 'Support Sites').

Registration and Support
File Master/2 is distributed under the ShareWare concept. This means
that you're free to use File Master/2 for a trial period of 30 days.
After that trial period you must decide either to register File
Master/2 with the author, or stop using it for now and the future.
The registration of File Master/2 isn't expensive. File Master/2 only
costs $12 (DFl 20,00). This registration will be valid until version
0.99. With the release of File Master/2 version 1.00, you need to
upgrade the registration. The upgrade registration of the 1.00 version,
will be $15 (DFl 22,50) lower than the normal registration for the 1.00
version.
To register File Master/2, all you need to do is complete the REGISTE-
R.FRM file, and send it to one of the registration sites.
When you've registered File Master/2, you'll be able to use more
options. And the further the development of File Master/2 comes, the
more (new) options will be only available for the registered version of
File Master/2.
The address to send the completed registration form to is:

Credits
While I've been programming File Master/2, I've had some great support
of a number of people. Some of them I'd like to mention in general,
because of their great help.
Francien van Lent (my girl-friend): You showed your patience when I
spent sometimes more time to File Master/2 than I spent to you. In
all circumstances you were there for me. You even gave me solutions
to problems I had with File Master/2.
Maurice Elfert: Thank you for putting me on the File master/2
project, and the testing while your BBS was on-line.
Robert Butler: After the call Maurice Elfert did the first time you
immediately wanted to become a Beta tester. Later on you also
wanted to become my US/Canadian registration and support site. I
think you're on an important place in the File Master/2 project.
Without you I don't think I would make it on the other side of the
Ocean... I surely hoop to drink a pint of beer with you in person
one day!
Rob Schouw: A friend and colleague of mine. When I started working
on File Master/2 I already wrote two small programs in C++. You
were more experienced than me with C++. Thank you for teaching me
so much in this great programming language.
Henk Dijksma: I would like to thank you for the Beta testing you
did. I'd also like to thank you for showing your patience when File
Master/2 had yet an other bug in the first Beta versions. <G> I
also appreciate it that you're thinking on how to solve bugs in
File Master/2.
Further more I's like to thank you for using File Master/2 as the file
manager for your BBS!
