History
"That's just another file finder." - You might think, and I hope you are not
right (sorry!). The usual way to find a file is to look for file names with
wildcards and then - find thousands of other files that do not match your
needs at all. So in fact the user does the second part of the work by
searching the file in the list of files that matched the name pattern.
The thing that makes this one different to others is the fact that you can
search for files not only by Name, but also by other criteria like:
Date
Time
Attributes
Size
You can also combine these properties, so you are more flexible to find
EXACTLY those files you're looking for - and not lots of others.
Think of a too small hard disk (unfortunately my harddisks are always not big
enough!). You want to look for files that take a lot of space on your disk and
probably want to get rid of them - no problem:
Simply let FFF have a look for files bigger than - let's say 1048576 Bytes and
- there you are.
Consider you have to reinstall a program you are using. You know that there
are configuration files that have been changed since you first installed the
product. Now you want to back-up these files and have to find them between
lots of others. Just another job for FFF:
Search for all files that have a Last-Changed-Date or -Time which is younger
than that one the program was installed on. If you don't know that date, have
a look at the Creation-Date of the subdirectory the program resides in and
then let FFF do the work.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Name - search characteristic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Check the Name property to restrict search for files by a name which can use
the wildcards "?" and "*".
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2. Date - search characteristic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Check the Date property to restrict possible files by their last-access-date.
You can choose between three operators for date comparison: "equal to", "bigger
than" and "less than".
Choose the date which should be used for comparison by changing the values in
the appropriate spin-button control. If you want to change the day, simply
click into the first date-field and spin the number up or down by clicking onto
an arrow or pressing the up or down-arrow key.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.3. Time - search characteristic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Click on the Time check box to select another search criterion which must be
fulfilled at the same time with the others that are checked.
Select one of the operators "=", "<" or ">" to find files which have a
last-access-time that is equal to, earlier than or later than the time selected
in the following spin button controls.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.4. Attributes - search characteristic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Check the Attributes check-box together with some of the check-boxes for the
file attributes to find only files that match this combinition of attributes.
The check-box for each attribute has three states:
checked
not checked
indefinite
If an attribute is checked (not checked), only files with this attribute set
(not set) are found. If the indefinite (grayed) state is selected, no care is
taken for this attribute. E.g. if R and A are checked, S is indefinite, H is
not checked and EA is indefinite, only files with attributes like RS_A or R__A
are found.
The EA check-box lets you restrict the search to files wich have (do not have)
Extended Attributes if you check (uncheck) the EA item. The size of the
Extended Attributes for each file will be shown on the Results Notebookpage.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.5. Size - search characteristic ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Size check-box to find only files with a certain size defined by the
size (in Bytes) selected in the entry- field and the current operator "=", "<"
or ">".
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.6. Start Paths - Entry Field ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Start Paths Entry Field to enter paths that should be included when
searching. As long as the characters you enter do not amount to a valid path,
the message "Path does not exist!" will occur in the message-line.
If you are ready entering the path, press the Add button to add the current
path to the list box of search paths. After pressing the button you will be
asked, if the subdirectories of the entered path should be included for
searching or not.
Since Version 1.1 of FFF you can also add Search paths by Drag'n Drop. Simply
drag any object on the FFF Main-Window and the path where the dropped object
resides is added to the list of search paths.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.7. Start Paths - Listbox ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This Listbox contains all paths that where added to the search paths by
entering a valid path name in the Start Paths Entry Field.
Every Path will be marked with a "+" or "-" which indicates whether this path
is searched including all subdirectories or not.
Use the Add Pushbutton to add the directory currently displayed in the Start
Paths Entry Field.
Press the Delete Pushbutton to delete the directories currently marked in the
Paths Listbox.
You can mark all entries in the Listbox by pressing the All Pushbutton. The
name of the All Pushbutton will then change to None so pressing this button
again will deselect all items in the Listbox.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.8. Add - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Add Pushbutton to add the directory currently displayed in the Start
Paths Entry Field to the Listbox containing all search paths.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.9. Delete - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Press the Delete Pushbutton to delete the directories currently marked in the
Start Paths Listbox.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.10. All - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can mark all entries in the Start Paths Listbox by pressing the All
Pushbutton. The name of the All Pushbutton will then change to None so pressing
this button again will deselect all items in the Listbox.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.11. Go! - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Pressing the Go! Pushbutton will start the search-thread which looks for files
matching the selected pattern in all subdirectories listed in the Start Paths
Listbox
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.12. Stop - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At any time after the search thread was started you can stop searching by
pressing the Stop Pushbutton.
If there are already files that match the search pattern, you can display those
files by selecting the Results Notebookpage.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.13. All Drives - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the All Drives Pushbutton to add the root directory of every drive, except
for the floppy-drives A: and B:, with subdirectories included, with a single
mouse click. You can exclude CD-ROM and/or Network drives from this action by
changing the Program Startup Parameters.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Results - Notebookpage ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Results Notebookpage displays all files that match the current search
pattern. Use Drag'n Drop to directly manipulate the files. This allows you to
load them directly to other Applications, copy them to other directories, ...
The name of a file can be changed easily by holding down the ALT-Key and
clicking with the left mousebutton on it. Changes will be made if the small
edit window is left by clicking somewhere else in the container. If you leave
editing the filename by pressing Escape, nothing will be changed.
You can take two actions on the selected entry directly from the Results
Window: you can edit the selected item(s) by clicking the Edit-Button or start
the selected item(s) by clicking the Run-Button. A shortcut to the Run action
is to double-click on an entry.
It is also possible to delete selected files by simply pressing the 'Del'-Key.
All sizes displayed are in Bytes (EA Size and File Size). If the EA Size of a
file could not be determined, the text N/A appears.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Edit - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Edit Pushbutton to start the Editor selected as My favourite Editor on
the Settings
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Run - Pushbutton ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Clicking the Run Pushbutton will ask you, if you want to start the selected
item(s) with default association. So if a selected item is an icon the icon
editor will be started to edit this icon.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Settings - Notebookpage ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Settings Notebookpage allows you to customize the settings used by the
Frisky File Finder.
Use this page to specify the Startup Parameters, choose your Favourite Editor,
set the Search Thread Priority and select the Date Style.
Every parameter will be changed immediately and except for the Search Thread
Priority -- which can only be changed while not searching for files -- changes
can take place at any time.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Program Start Parameters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you select the All Drives selected after startup checkbox, the root
directory of every drive on your system (except for A: and B:) will be added to
the Start Paths listbox after program startup. You can restrict the drives by
selecting Skip CD-ROM Drives or Skip Network Drives. The last two options also
affect the operation of the All Drives pushbutton.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. My favourite Editor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the My favourite Editor Entryfield to specifiy the editor that should be
invoked if you press the Edit Button on the Results Notebookpage. Click on the
Browse-Button to select the editor you like if you don't want to type in the
command line to invoke it.
Select the Multiple Files checkbox if the editor is able to handle more than
one file at a time (e.g. EPM is). Depending on this setting, pressing the Edit
Button on the Results Notebookpage will invoke one instance of the editor per
selected file or one instance with all the file-names as a command line
argument separated by spaces. So if your favourite Editor is EPM.EXE, selecting
Multiple Files will generate a command line like the following:
EPM.EXE file1 file2 file3
if the three files file1 file2 and file3 where selected to be edited.
Use the Command Line Prefix and Command Line Suffix Entryfields to specify some
text that should be added to the command line that invokes the editor.
Depending on the state of the Prefix per File and the Suffix per File
checkboxes, the text will be added to the command line only once or for every
file. If the Command Line Suffix is 'bot' in the above example, the resulting
command line would look like this:
EPM.EXE file1 file2 file3 'bot'
or
EPM.EXE file1 'bot' file2 'bot' file3 'bot'
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3. Search Thread Priority ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To change the priority of the background process that searches the selected
paths for files that match the search pattern, select one of the Radiobuttons
beneath Search Thread Priority.
The priority may be changed in three steps:
Idle Time
This is the lowest priority. The search thread will only continue, if no
other program needs to be executed. Use this setting if you don't need
the search results as soon as possible and if you want to go on working
with other programs that should run smoothly.
Regular
This is the standard priority. Every program that doesn't specify it's
own priority will run in this priority class. This setting is a good
compromise between smooth execution of other programs and a fast file
find.
Time Critical
Selecting this priority will run the Search Thread at maximum speed but
will slow down the execution of any other program that has a lower
priority. It is recommended not to use this priority as default unless
you have a multi processor computer running OS/2 for SMP or nothing else
to do.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4. Date Style ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Style of the Date property on the Search Notebookpage can be changed by
selecting the Radiobutton DD/MM/YY or MM/DD/YY.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Registration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you use Frisky File Finder in private, your price is US$25. If commercial
use is planned, the price is US$50. This version of FFF replaces all previous
versions of the Frisky File Finder. After the release of this version
registrations of earlier versions are no longer accepted.
The company license which is US$450 allows you to use as many copies of FFF as
wanted within one company.
As a registered User you will get the registration-code which will enable your
FFF to work without those annoying About-Boxes for all future versions of FFF
which have the same major version number. For a quick answer on registration,
send me an e-mail or fax with your e-mail address. Make sure that your e-mail
or snail-mail address is correct! The registration code will be send by
snail-mail, because e-mail is not very safe.
Updates will be available from several FTP-servers and BBSs.
How to pay:
First of all you can pay by cheque which must be payable to Uwe Hegemann.
You can also use bank-transfer if you like. In this case you should also send
me this registration form (by e-mail, snail-mail or fax). The dates you need
are:
Volksbank Buldern
(BLZ 401 668 00)
account 1136700
But I'm afraid the bank charges are really high if transfer is done from
outside of Germany.
If you prefer to pay by credit card, please use the BMT Micro Shareware
Registration Site since I currently do not accept credit cards directly.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. History ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Version 1.0
Since Frisky File Finder is brand new, it has no history!
Version 1.01
Added two Buttons in the Results-Window: Edit and Run.
Version 1.1
Added drag'n drop support for adding search paths.
Pressing the Run - Button in the Results-Window will start the selected
item with its default association.
Added extended selection in the Results-Window.
Some minor enhancements like registering FFF by entering a code rather
than waiting for a registered copy of FFF.
Version 1.2
Added full Drag'n Drop support to the Results-Window!
Search results can be deleted by selecting them and pressing the
Delete-Key.
All window settings e.g. size, position and font for the main Dialog and
the Results-Window will be saved, so you can fully customize your Frisky
File Finder by using the Font- and Color-Palette -- dragging and dropping
your favourite look.
Added an All Drives-Pushbutton to add all available drives to the list of
search paths by a single click.
A German version is available now.
Version 1.3
Complete redesign of the User-Interface, FFF 1.3 comes in Notebook
format.
A New Search Criterion "EA" has been added. It allows to search for files
that have or do not have EAs. The size of a File's EAs is listed in the
Container on the Results-Notebookpage.
Added a Settings-Notebookpage for a more flexible configuration.
Choosing your favourite Editor is now possible - with Commandline
Parameters.
The Date Style can be changed from DD/MM/YY format to MM/DD/YY.
The Priority for the Search Thread can be changed in three Steps.
Many minor enhancements.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Shareware Restrictions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Frisky File Finder as a shareware product has no functional restrictions. The
only restriction that should remind you of registering FFF is every time the
'Go!'-Pushbutton is pressed, the About-Box is displayed and after a certain
number of searches the program terminates.
Please support further development of FFF by registering. One of the things i'm
planning to include is the full support of Extended-Attributes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Registration - Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Enter the registration information you obtained from the Author of this program
to register your version of FFF.
Moving to another system or reinstallation of your operating system might lead
to a loss of registration information. In this case, please reenter
registration codes.
