  8.                Initial installation of VBBS is quite straightforward.  It
  9.          is perhaps the easiest BBS software in the world to install!
  10.

  12.          Before You Install VBBS
  13.          ═══════════════════════

  15.                Before you install VBBS, you need to make sure you have
  16.          copies of the following programs and that they are in a directory
  17.          specified in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file's PATH statement:

  19.          ∙  PKZIP and PKUNZIP archive programs 
  20.  
  21.          -->  IMPORTANT NOTE: VNet only uses version 1.10 of PKZip
  22.                               at this time.  Make sure you have this
  23.                               version if you wish to participate in the
  24.                               VNet and other networks under VBBS.
  25.  
  26.          ▓▓   OS/2 VERSION  : Please refer to the VBBS OS/2 installation
  27.                               instructions in the Appendix.

  29.          ∙  ZModem transfer protocol (usually named DSZxxxx.xxx)
  30.  
  31.             Other programs that would be useful in the day to day
  32.          operations of your BBS might include:
  33.  
  34.          ∙  TheDraw 4.60 or later (for creating your own menus)
  35.          ∙  ARJ 2.11 or later (an alternative archive program)
  36.          ∙  DCOM 3.44 or later (DOS shell to speed file moving/copying)

  39.          -->  IMPORTANT NOTE:  These programs are NOT supplied with the
  40.                                original VBBS archive; you have to get
  41.                                them on your own.  Fortunately, many BBSes
  42.                                have them available for download.

  45.          New VBBS Installations
  46.          ══════════════════════

  48.                To install VBBS as a NEW installation, follow these in-
  49.          structions:
  50.  
  51.          1)  Create a temporary directory on your hard drive and make it
  52.              your current directory.
  53.  
  54.          2)  Using PKUNZIP, extract the contents of VBBS611.ZIP and
  55.              VDOC611.ZIP into the temporary directory.
  56.  
  57.          3)  Run INSTALL.EXE; when asked if this is a NEW installation,
  58.              answer "yes".

  63.          4)  As the VCONFIG.EXE program is presented, verify the configu-
  64.              ration, particularly in the MAIN configuration and -- MOST
  65.              importantly -- in the CHANNEL configuration.  All single-
  66.              node VBBS installations use the same command line:
  67.              BBS 1
  68.  
  69.              This names channel 1 as the primary channel.  After this,
  70.              you only need to correctly identify your modem port number
  71.              and baud rate in the channel 1 configuration.

  74.           Upgrading Existing Installations
  75.           ════════════════════════════════

  77.           -->  IMPORTANT NOTE:  VBBS 6.11 upgrades VBBS version 6.10 ONLY!
  78.                                 Sysops of previous versions will need to
  79.                                 either upgrade to version 6.00 prior to
  80.                                 moving to version 6.11, or install 6.11 as
  81.                                 NEW.

  83.                To upgrade to version 6.11 from version 6.10, follow these
  84.          instructions:
  85.  
  86.          1)  MAKE BACKUP COPIES of the following:
  87.  
  88.            a) files in your database directory (\VBBS\DB)
  89.            b) files in your data directory (\VBBS\DATA)
  90.            c) your .CFG files
  91.  
  92.          2)  Delete ALL occurrences of the file CONTROL.DAT from your sys-
  93.              tem.
  94.  
  95.          3)  Move VBBS611.ZIP & VDOC611.ZIP into a separate directory
  96.              and unZIP them there.
  97.  
  98.          4)  Run the INSTALL.EXE program; when it asks if this is a NEW
  99.              installation, respond "no", then name the correct path to
  100.              your actual VBBS directory.  Your .CFG files will NOT be
  101.              overwritten.

  103.          5)  Verify the settings in VCONFIG and change channel 1 in the
  104.              CHANNEL configuration to reflect your modem port.  Base and
  105.              IRQ addresses are set automatically.

  107.          -->  IMPORTANT NOTE:  The INSTALL.EXE program for version 6.11,
  108.                                when used to upgrade existing installa-
  109.                                tions, copies ONLY the new .EXE file to
  110.                                your VBBS directory.  It does NOT over-
  111.                                write menus, script files, text files, or
  112.                                function blocks.

  117.          6)  Once INSTALL.EXE has finished, you may need to copy or manu-
  118.              ally edit some files.  Files to consider replacing or editing
  119.              are noted in the 610_READ.ME! file. Some are:
  120.              *.ANS     *.ASC     *.TXT     *.PDM     *.FB
  121.  
  122.          7)  After the upgrade to 6.11, you should go into VCONFIG to
  123.              SORT your database configuration and COMPILE network info.
