  3.                  Magnum BBS (r) - Version 9.00D2 (DEMO)

  5. Welcome to Magnum BBS version 9.00D2 (DEMO).  If this is your first DEMO
  6. of Magnum BBS software,  we'd like to welcome  you to the most  powerful
  7. BBS system  available for  the OS/2  operating system!   Please refer to
  8. your Magnum BBS user manual for installation and usage instructions; the
  9. final  portion  of  this  READ.ME  file  applies  only  to those who are
  10. installing version 9.00D2 over an existing DEMO version of the software.

  12.                            DEMO RESTRICTIONS:
  13.  
  14.                 128 Users (maximum) in the USER database
  15.                128 Messages (maximum) in the MSG database
  16.                 128 Files (maximum) in the FILE database
  17.                    Database PACK feature is disabled
  18.          Magnum-to-Magnum Remote Mail (AMMO/RMAIL) is disabled
  19.                  MILC commands @E2 and @E3 are disabled
  20.                   No QWK message uploads (downloads ok)
  21.                         EMAILIN.EXE not included
  22.           Serial# is 1111111111 (all DEMO's have this serial#)

  25. IMPORTANT:  Before starting the installation program (MAGSINT.EXE), have
  26.             the diskette in your A: or B: drive.
  27.             Start the install program as A:\MAGINST or B:\MAGINST
  28.  
  29. Unlike other BBS DEMOs, there is NO time restriction or expiration date.
  30. Use the DEMO as long  as you wish.  Chances  are that you'll run out  of
  31. space in the  MSG or FILE  database before you  run out of  space in the
  32. USER database.  We WANT you to get a feel of the power and  capabilities
  33. of Magnum BBS for OS/2,  so take your time... you are under  NO pressure
  34. to learn this system in x amount of days like other demo's!   And by the
  35. way,  the  commercial  release(s)  hold in excess of 6.6 million records
  36. of each of the databases.

  38. WARNING: Database Formats in the DEMO version are different than that of
  39.          the commercial format!  3rd-party and aftermarket programs
  40.          designed for the databases of the commercial release will NOT
  41.          work with the DEMO release!  3rd-party programs not using the
  42.          databases will work fine (ie: FOSSDM05.ZIP & MAGFOSS.ZIP, and
  43.          any door programs).

  45. IMPORTANT: If you "downloaded" this DEMO release, then you MUST copy ALL
  46.            files within the .ZIP file you downloaded onto a high-density
  47.            floppy diskette in your A: or B: drive!  Installation/upgrade
  48.            only takes place from the A: or B: drive!  There should be
  49.            19 files within the .ZIP file that you downloaded (including
  50.            this READ.ME file).

  52.            READ THE ADDENDUM.DOC FILE FOR IMPORTANT LAST-MINUTE INFO!!

  54.            NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
  55.                  HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
  56.                  (MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!

  58. IF YOU'RE NOT INSTALLING THIS OVER A PREVIOUS DEMO RELEASE, SIMPLY ENTER
  59. THE FOLLOWING COMMAND:

  64. Additional Files on this diskette that you should be aware of:
  65.  
  66.      ORDER.TXT - The ORDER form for Magnum BBS softare.  If you wish to
  67.                  purchase Magnum BBS software, use this handy form!
  68.  
  69.     MODEMS.TXT - Contains modem setup/initialization codes for the more
  70.                  popular modems.
  71.  
  72.     MAGFAQ.TXT - This text file contains a list of Questions and Answers
  73.                  on "Magnum Frequently Asked Questions" by new sysops.
  74.  
  75.   WHATSNEW.ZIP - Contains five files: WHATSNEW.5 thru WHATSNEW.9; each of
  76.                  these files tell what's new (in the commercial release)
  77.                  from the previous release (ie: WHATSNEW.9 tells what's
  78.                  new since version 8; WHATSNEW.8 tells what's new since
  79.                  version 7, etc).  To print these files, enter the
  80.                  following commands at an OS/2 command prompt (assume
  81.                  diskette in drive A:, and you're currently on drive C:):

  92.                  The above commands will print the WHATSNEW.9 file.
  93.                  Follow the same steps above, replacing WHATSNEW.9 with
  94.                  WHATSNEW.8 if you'd like to print this file too.

  96.     MAGDOC.ZIP - Contains the user manual.  You may print the user
  97.                  user manual by issuing the following commands at an
  98.                  OS/2 command prompt (assume diskette in drive A:, and
  99.                  1 Mb Free Space on drive C:):

  110.                  WARNINGS: - The user manual is formatted to print on
  111.                              66 lines per page, 80 characters per line.
  112.                            - If your printer performs an automatic
  113.                              "perf-skip", deactivate it!
  114.                            - If you're using a European printer at 72
  115.                              characters per line), switch to condensed
  116.                              mode first!
  117.                            - If you're using a duplex printer (ie: a
  118.                              printer capable of printing both sides of
  119.                              each sheet such as the HP LJ 3d), put your
  120.                              printer in 'duplex mode' prior to printing!
  121.                            - There are approximately 336 pages!! Make
  122.                              certain you have enough paper!

  124. Magnum BBS comes in a variety of configurations. The version numbers on
  125. your diskette reveals the configuration you have:
  126.  
  127.     M.mmTnn
  128.     | | ||____ nn = number of nodes (nn = your 'local' (console) node).
  129.     | | |_____  T = Type (A=Alpha, B=Beta, C=Commercial, D=Demo)
  130.     | |_______ mm = minor revision number
  131.     |_________  M = major revision number

  133.     Example:  9.00D2 means you have version 9.00, Demo release, and
  134.               node 2 is your local (console) node... all other nodes
  135.               are dialup nodes.
  136.  
  137. In  addition  to  providing  'dialup'  (modem)  support;  Magnum BBS can
  138. support "pipe" nodes on your LAN.  This demo release includes DEMO  pipe
  139. modules (refer to  file PIPES.ZIP on  the distribution diskette).   Some
  140. companies use  Magnum BBS  as a  LAN-based BBS  with some,  many, or all
  141. nodes configured  as "pipe"  rather than  modem.   The pipe  modules are
  142. available in OS/2 and  DOS flavors and work  with any LAN software  that
  143. supports "named pipes" (ie:  IBM LanServer, MS LanManager, Banyan Vines,
  144. Novell Netware, etc).   NOTE:   Pipe modules are  NOT included with  the
  145. commercial release, they are available for purchase separately; the DEMO
  146. pipe modules are non-functional with the commercial release.

  155. If you're running a previous  DEMO version of Magnum (5.02D2, 6.00D2,
  156. 7.00D2 or 8.07D2), you may install version  9.00D2 by running the
  157. intelligent installation program supplied on the version 9.00D2
  158. distribution diskette (you 'make' the distribution  diskette by copying
  159. ALL files within this .ZIP file that you downloaded to a high-density
  160. floppy diskette).

  162.            NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
  163.                  HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
  164.                  (MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!

  166. To  install  Magnum  BBS  version  9.00D2  over a previous DEMO version,
  167. follow these simple instructions:
  168.  
  169.     0) Back Up your PGM_DIR, EXT_DIR, RJE_DIR and SES_DIR
  170.        ===>>> THIS STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP YOU CAN TAKE!!
  171.               IF YOU DO NOT PERFORM THIS STEP, WE CANNOT PROVIDE
  172.               TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN THE EVENT SOMETHING GOES WRONG!!

  174.               TO DO IS TO RESTORE FROM YOUR BACKUP!!

  176.     1) Insert the Magnum BBS version 9.00D2 diskette in your A: or B:
  177.        diskette drive.
  178.  
  179.     2) At an OS/2 command prompt (OS/2 fullscreen or window), switch to
  180.        your PGM_DIR (the directory where MBBS.EXE and MSESSION.EXE are
  181.        located).
  182.  
  183.     3) Making sure you are on the drive and in the PGM_DIR that your BBS
  184.        is located in, enter one of the following commands:
  185.  
  186.            A:\MAGINST.EXE
  187.        or
  188.            B:\MAGINST.EXE
  189.  
  190.        depending on whether the Magnum distribution diskette is in your
  191.        A: or B: diskette drive.
  192.  
  193.     4) Upon completion of the intelligent installation program, restart
  194.        your BBS!
  195.  
  196.     5) Log on as the Sysop and change your PHONE1 parm to that of your
  197.        main BBS telephone number.
