REVISION HISTORY:
Version 5.00
The only changes made in this revision relate
to the change of address, telephone numbers and
copyright dates. Other than this, v5.00 is
identical to v4.00. We anticipate another change
of address (and possibly phone numbers) around
March of 1994.
Version 4.00
With the release of Magnum BBS version 6.xx,
Remote (Magnum-to-Magnum) mail now exists.
This version of POWER (4.00) will allow you
to respond to and create messages to users on
other Magnum systems who exchange mail with
the Magnum system you're calling. NOTE: Not all
Magnum Sysops have opted to implement remote mail!
Check with the Sysop of your local Magnum BBS.
Responding to a message from a remote user (a
user on a different Magnum system) is no different
than responding to a local Magnum system (the same
Magnum system you're calling).
If you wish to create a new message to someone, you
must know their address. Addresses are in the form
of $nnnnnnnnnn/idnum where $ indicates a remote
addressee, nnnnnnnnnn is the 10-digit serial# of the
Magnum system that person is on, and /idnum is that
person's id number on the Magnum system that person
is on. Also, nnnnnnnnnn can also be the word BROADCAST
if you wish to send broadcast mail to all Magnum systems
linked with the system you're calling. The id number of
a BROADCAST message can either be ALL or SYSOP (ie:
$BROADCAST/ALL or $BROADCAST/SYSOP). If $BROADCAST/SYSOP,
the message will be sent to all Sysops on the link, and
this can be either a private or public message (your
choice). Normally, addressee's will consist of addresses
such as: $1989070000/0 - this is the address of the
Sysop at Gilmore Systems BBS in Thousand Oaks, California
(the makers of Magnum BBS software). Note that the address
$1989070000/SYSOP is identical. To send a message to user
/184 on system 1989070000, the address is $1989070000/184.
To send a message to a user on the same system you're
calling, their address is simply their ID number (ie: /184).
Magnum systems which participate in remote mail may have
certain message bases set up as ECHO. This means that your
message (if public) will be echoed to other Magnum systems!
The best way to enter a general message on these systems is
to address it to ALL (instead of $BROADCAST/ALL).
Please skip to "The POWER Process" for further documentation
unless you wish to see the revision history for POWER.
Version 3.00
With the release of Magnum version 5.xx,
'Extended Message Bases' now exist. This
version will allow you to respond to or
create messages for message bases other
than message base 0.
The program is no longer a 'bound' (fapi)
program. There are now 2 .EXE's included:
POWER2.EXE - for OS/2
POWER.EXE - for DOS
----------------------------------------
Version 2.01
Now allows message ORIGINATION.
Supports Intel 808x & 80x86 processors.
Internal changes but basically identical
to version 2.00.
----------------------------------------
Version 2.00
Can choose a Conference area to read from
instead of going through every conference.
Prior to originating or responding to a
message, you now have the option of making
the message PRIVATE (as opposed to PUBLIC),
and requesting a RECEIPT (if directed to
another userID).

==> The POWER Process <==
\----------------------------------------/
Welcome to the Magnum POWER program from Gilmore Systems. POWER is an
acronym for "Personal Offline Writer-Editor-Reader". You can use the
POWER.EXE or POWER2.EXE program with any Magnum BBS System where the Sysop
has implemented POWER processing in their RJE menu. Unlike previous
versions, POWER is now being supplied as two separate programs (both
included in this distribution): POWER2.EXE for OS/2, and POWER.EXE for
DOS.
Many people call BBS's from long distance. Long distance telephone charges
have not only made people upset at the time that their phone bill comes, but
in some cases, people stop calling long distance BBS's alltogether or reduce
the frequency with which they call. Magnum BBS systems, the ONLY BBS system
to offer RJE, in conjunction with the POWER.EXE and POWER2.EXE programs will
help you to reduce long distance charges, connect time, and will allow you
read messages, reply to messages, or create messages at your leisure, all
OFFLINE!
The way it works is as follows:
1) Dial a Magnum BBS board.
2) From the main menu, choose [R]JE section.
3) Once in the RJE menu, choose [L]ist/Execute.
4) From there, choose CREATE AN ARC/ZIP list of messages on the system.
You'll be able to choose which conference areas you want, and what
date range of messages you'd like. Once this is done, an RJE task
(Remote Job Entry) will start. Because RJE tasks run as background
processes, you needn't bother waiting for the task to finish. You're
free to do any other BBS functions you wish (file xfer, message entry,
etc...) - or - you can even log off! The RJE task will continue to
process your request regardless of whether you're online or offline,
transferring a file or entering a message. If you're still online when
the task finishes, Magnum will notify you. Once the task is finished,
choose [C]ompleted Jobs from the RJE menu to find out the name of the
file the RJE task created for you. The naming convention used is
IDxxxx@y.ZIP (or IDxxxx@y.ARC) where xxxx is your Magnum ID number,
and y is usually 0. y can range from 0 to 9 and A to F.
5) Go to the [F]iles menu, and download the completed file. If you do not
download the file by the next day, it will be deleted. The file will
be password protected with your logon password. If your logon password
is greater than 10 characters, then only use the first 10 characters of
your logon password in response to the Password prompt.
6) Once you've downloaded the file, unZIP or unARC the file. There will
be one file in that ZIP or ARC with an extension of .MSG
7) Execute the POWER.EXE (DOS) or POWER2.EXE (OS/2) program, supplying
the name of the .MSG file as the parm to the POWER program. From this
point, everything will be self-explanatory. The same ANSI editor
that's used on Magnum BBS systems has been incorporated into the POWER
program for your convenience.
8) Once you've read and responded to the messages you wish (or created
any new messages, you can call the Magnum BBS system back and upload
your response file to the RJE section. Your response file will have a
name of IDxxxx.POW, where xxxx is your Magnum BBS ID number. Choose
[R]JE Menu, then choose to upload your POWER file. Once you've
uploaded, another RJE task will automatically be started which will
process your responses and place them in the message database. Once
you've finished uploading, you're free to perform any other BBS
functions, or to log off. The RJE task which is processing your .POW
file will continue to run in the background to its completion once
started.
9) Delete the .POW file at your end once you've successfully uploaded it.
----------------------------------------
* * * IMPORTANT: DO NOT ALTER THE .MSG FILE (Created by Magnum), or the .POW
file (created by POWER).
POWER can let you create a NEW message (not necessarily a reply to an
existing message) but you need to have the .MSG file (created by the Magnum
BBS system) in order to do so. The .MSG file tells POWER which conferences
you can use.
POWER.EXE is provided as a free service from Gilmore Systems, the makers of
Magnum BBS systems for the OS/2 Operating System.
POWER.EXE and the associated RJE processing facilities have been released in
late November, 1990. Not all Sysops running a Magnum BBS system will choose
to implement POWER, but those who do will be offering you a tremendous
service.
