Magnum BBS (r) - Version 7.00D2 (DEMO)
Welcome to Magnum BBS version 7.00D2 (DEMO). If this is your first DEMO
of Magnum BBS software, we'd like to welcome you to the most powerful
BBS system available for the OS/2 operating system! Please refer to
your Magnum BBS user manual for installation and usage instructions; the
final portion of this READ.ME file applies only to those who are
installing version 7.00D2 over an existing DEMO version of the software.
DEMO RESTRICTIONS:
128 Users (maximum) in the USER database
128 Messages (maximum) in the MSG database
128 Files (maximum) in the FILE database
Database PACK feature is disabled
Magnum-to-Magnum Remote Mail (AMMO/RMAIL) is disabled
MILC commands @E2 and @E3 are disabled
Serial# is 1111111111 (all DEMO's have this serial#)
Unlike other BBS DEMOs, there is NO time restriction or expiration date.
Use the DEMO as long as you wish. Chances are that you'll run out of
space in the MSG or FILE database before you run out of space in the
USER database. We WANT you to get a feel of the power and capabilities
of Magnum BBS for OS/2, so take your time... you are under NO pressure
to learn this system in x amount of days like other demo's! And by the
way, the commercial release(s) hold in excess of 2 billion records in
each of the databases.
WARNING: Database Formats in the DEMO version is different than that of
the commercial format! 3rd-party and aftermarket programs
designed for the databases of the commercial release will NOT
work with the DEMO release!
IMPORTANT: If you "downloaded" this DEMO release, then you MUST copy ALL
files within the .ZIP file you downloaded onto a high-density
floppy diskette in your A: or B: drive! Installation/upgrade
only takes place from the A: or B: drive!
NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
(MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!
IF YOU'RE NOT INSTALLING THIS OVER A PREVIOUS DEMO RELEASE, SIMPLY ENTER
THE FOLLOWING COMMAND:
A:\MAGINST (or B:\MAGINST)
Additional Files on this diskette that you should be aware of:
ORDER.TXT - The ORDER form for Magnum BBS softare. If you wish to
purchase Magnum BBS software, use this handy form!
MODEMS.TXT - Contains modem setup/initialization codes for the more
popular modems.
MAGFAQ.TXT - This text file contains a list of Questions and Answers
on "Magnum Frequently Asked Questions" by new sysops.
WHATSNEW.ZIP - Contains two files: WHATSNEW.5 and WHATSNEW.6; each of
these files tell what's new (in the commercial release)
from the previous release (ie: WHATSNEW.7 tells what's
new since version 6; WHATSNEW.6 tells what's new since
version 5). To print these files, enter the following
commands at an OS/2 command prompt (assume diskette in
drive A:, and you're currently on drive C:):
C:
MD \TEMP
CD \TEMP
A:\PKUNZIP2 A:\WHATSNEW WHATSNEW.7
COPY WHATSNEW.7 PRN
DEL WHATSNEW.7
CD \
RD \TEMP
The above commands will print the WHATSNEW.7 file.
Follow the same steps above, replacing WHATSNEW.7 with
WHATSNEW.6 if you'd like to print this file too.
MAGDOC.ZIP - Contains the user manual. You may print the user
user manual by issuing the following commands at an
OS/2 command prompt (assume diskette in drive A:, and
1 Mb Free Space on drive C:):
C:
MD \TEMP
CD \TEMP
A:\PKUNZIP2 A:\MAGDOC
COPY MAGNUM.DOC PRN
DEL MAGNUM.DOC
CD \
RD \TEMP
WARNINGS: - The user manual is formatted to print on
66 lines per page, 80 characters per line.
- If your printer performs an automatic
"perf-skip", deactivate it!
- If you're using a European printer at 72
characters per line), switch to condensed
mode first!
- If you're using a duplex printer (ie: a
printer capable of printing both sides of
each sheet such as the HP LJ 3d), put your
printer in 'duplex mode' prior to printing!
- There are approximately 298 pages!! Make
certain you have enough paper!
Magnum BBS comes in a variety of configurations. The version numbers on
your diskette reveals the configuration you have:
M.mmTnn
| | ||____ nn = number of nodes (nn = your 'local' (console) node).
| | |_____ T = Type (A=Alpha, B=Beta, C=Commercial, D=Demo)
| |_______ mm = minor revision number
|_________ M = major revision number
Example: 7.00D2 means you have version 7.00, Demo release, and
node 2 is your local (console) node... all other nodes
are dialup nodes.
In addition to providing 'dialup' (modem) support; Magnum BBS can
support "pipe" nodes on your LAN. This demo release includes DEMO pipe
modules (refer to file PIPES.ZIP on the distribution diskette). Some
companies use Magnum BBS as a LAN-based BBS with some, many, or all
nodes configured as "pipe" rather than modem. The pipe modules are
available in OS/2 and DOS flavors and work with any LAN software that
supports "named pipes" (ie: IBM LanServer, MS LanManager, Banyan Vines,
Novell Netware, etc). NOTE: Pipe modules are NOT included with the
commercial release, they are available for purchase separately; the DEMO
pipe modules are non-functional with the commercial release.

* Installation Over a Previous Version of Magnum *
* *
**************************************************
If you're running a previous DEMO version of Magnum (5.02D2 or 6.00D2)
you may install version 7.00D2 by running the intelligent installation
program supplied on the version 7.00D2 distribution diskette (you 'make'
the distribution diskette by copying ALL files within this .ZIP file
that you downloaded to a high-density floppy diskette).
NOTE: If you're using a 5.25" HD floppy (as opposed to a 3.5"
HD floppy), don't copy the documentation file over
(MAGDOC.ZIP); it won't fit!
To install Magnum BBS version 7.00D2 over a previous DEMO version,
follow these simple instructions:
0) Back Up your PGM_DIR, EXT_DIR, RJE_DIR and SES_DIR
===>>> THIS STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP YOU CAN TAKE!!
IF YOU DO NOT PERFORM THIS STEP, WE CANNOT PROVIDE
TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN THE EVENT SOMETHING GOES WRONG!!
===>>> IF YOU CALL FOR HELP, THE *FIRST* THING WE'LL ASK YOU
TO DO IS TO RESTORE FROM YOUR BACKUP!!
1) Insert the Magnum BBS version 7.00D2 diskette in your A: or B:
diskette drive.
2) At an OS/2 command prompt (OS/2 fullscreen or window), switch to
your PGM_DIR (the directory where MBBS.EXE and MSESSION.EXE are
located).
3) Making sure you are on the drive and in the PGM_DIR that your BBS
is located in, enter one of the following commands:
A:\MAGINST.EXE
or
B:\MAGINST.EXE
depending on whether the Magnum distribution diskette is in your
A: or B: diskette drive.
4) Upon completion of the intelligent installation program, restart
your BBS!
5) Log on as the Sysop and change your PHONE1 parm to that of your
main BBS telephone number.
End.
