Welcome to Air Warrior!
What you have downloaded is the IBM PC and compatibles front end for
Air Warrior. Requirements to run this program are:
1) 386/25 or better.
2) 4 Meg of RAM - 3.5 Meg free.
3) Video card capable of 640x480 resolution in 256 colors.
4) Hard disk with at least 7 meg free.
5) A mouse or joystick - joystick recommended.
Installing and Running the Air Warrior Front End.
If you're reading this, it means that you've already unpacked the PC
Kit on your hard drive. It will work best if you unpacked it into a clean
directory. DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM OVER A PREVIOUS VERSION OF AIR
WARRIOR.
To run the program, type AIRWAR. The program examines your video
hardware and tries to write an appropriate video driver. If it fails to do
so, here are some likely things that can go wrong.
Error Messages.
"Unknown video driver." This will appear if you specify a video driver
that the program doesn't know. Usually it means that you've mistyped the
driver's name.
"VESA compatible video BIOS not found." The program could not identify
an appropriate video driver for your hardware and tried to write a VESA
driver. Unfortunately, your video card either does not support VESA, or
you need to put the card into VESA mode. Check the manual for your video
card regarding its VESA compatibility.
For the Diamond Viper, for example, you'll need to use the program
VPRMODE that comes with the card. If you type VPRMODE VESA it will put the
card into VESA mode. Other Diamond cards have a program called VMODE.COM
and the syntax is VMODE VESA. For the latest ATI cards, the program is
called VVESA.COM. You type VVESA without parameters to put it into VESA
mode.
"VESA BIOS does not support required resolution." This likely means
that, although your video card supports some VESA modes, it does not
support 640x480x256. Contact the card's manufacturer to see if they have
an update to the original BIOS.
"Can't create video driver." This is quite rare. It means that you're
either out of disk space or that your video driver (AWVIDEO.DRV) is write
protected or read-only and cannot be overwritten. Use the DOS ATTRIB
command to remove such attributes by typing ATTRIB -R -S -H AWVIDEO.DRV.
"Can't allocate driver buffer." There's not enough memory to load the
driver into memory. You'll see this if you don't have at least 3.5
megabytes of RAM free at start-up.
"You do not appear to have the minimum 512K of video memory Air Warrior
needs." This somewhat lengthy error message means that you have a video
card with 256k of onboard video RAM. You need at least 512k of video
memory to support 640x480 resolution in 256 colors, which the Air Warrior
program needs. You can add more RAM to many cards; check the card's
documentation.
"Our program does not recognize your video hardware." Don't you love
it when error messages address you in a conversational tone? Neither do I.
What this means is that either we don't support, or our routine did not
detect, your video hardware. Try the VESA driver by using the force mode
feature described below.
"Stub exec failed," Something prevented the protected mode application
from loading into high memory. Check available high memory - again, you
need 3.5meg free.
Forcing the Use of a Video Driver
Air Warrior is, after all, a computer program and sometimes it will
fail to accurately detect your video hardware. You can force it to load
the following drivers at start up by typing AIRWAR /v[video driver].
Western Digital WD90C00 or PVGA1B - WD90C00.DRV
Tseng Labs 4000 - TSE4000.DRV
Tseng Labs 3000 - TSE3000.DRV
Trident 8900 - TRI8900.DRV
Trident 8800 - TRI8800.DRV
ATI VGA - ATI18800.DRV
Oak Technology 067 and 077 - OAK.DRV
Video7 - V7VGA.DRV
Diamond Stealth VRAM (S3 chip) - STEALTH.DRV
VESA - VESA.DRV
Chips & Technology CT82C45x - CT82C452.DRV
Ahead B - AHDV5000.DRV
For example, if you know you have a Tseng ET4000 based card and Air
Warrior fails to recognize it, you can force it to use the Tseng 4000
driver by typing AIRWAR /vTSE4000.DRV.
Finding and Using Artwork and Additional Sound Files.
Professional cockpit artwork for all aircraft featured in Air Warrior
is available in the Air Warrior Software Library - menu item 3 on GEnie
page 870. You want Library 13 - the SVGA AW Extras Lib. Art or sound
files in other libraries will not work with this program. To have stereo
sound you will need the stereo sound samples - SVGASND.EXE in library 13.
DO NOT CHECK THE STEREO SOUND OPTION IF YOU HAVE NOT DOWNLOADED THE STEREO
SOUND FILES.
Read MANUAL.DOC for complete details on running this program. You can
also order a complete, printed manual for Air Warrior - menu item 8 on page
870.
If You Have Problems With This Program.
If you have any problems, questions, or comments regarding Air Warrior,
please send email to KESMAI.SUP on GEnie.
GOOD LUCK!
