FAST SMOOTH DIRECTORY
© 1990 Chris Hames
If you get sick waiting for your floppies to produce a directory
whether it be the AmigaDOG List command, or the open file requestor in
your favourite program, here is the program for you. FSDir patches File
System for all your floppies so that when a program produces a directory,
my speedy code is used. Result: a big increase in directory displays.
In addition, my code cuts down the grinding of the drive moving from
track to track by reading them in a sorted (as much as possible) order.
Just put FSDir in your startup-sequence (you don't have to run it
either!) and live with much more acceptable floppy directory reads. Your
drives should benifit as well. They won't have to grind back and forth so
much.
Note: sometimes your drive motor won't turn off and you will loose 512bytes
of memory. Sorry, but no-one's perfect. Besides, no adverse effects occur.
The motor will turn off next time you access the drive.
RUNNING FSDIR
n Enter the CLI (click on the CLI icon in the FSDIR drawer).
n At the prompt type: CD DF0:FDIR (return).
n Then type: FDIR (return).
n Try out the program by typing in DIR (return) and see the difference.
n Return from the CLI by typing ENDCLI (return).
HOW TO PLACE FSDIR IN THE STARTUP-SEQUENCE OF YOUR BOOT DISK
Run a text processor of your choice. When requested to load a file,
insert your boot disk and load in the STARTUP-SEQUENCE file. You'll find
it in the S drawer.
Somewhere before the LOADWB command enter the following:
DF0:C/FSDIR
For this to work you must copy FSDIR into your C directory. One way of
doing this is to start up with your Workbench disk, enter the CLI and type
the following:
CD C:
COPY COPY RAM:
COPY CD RAM:
(at this point remove your Workbench disk and insert the Cover Disk)
CD DF0:FSDIR
COPY FSDIR RAM:
(at this point remove your Cover Disk and insert you boot disk)
CD DF0:
CD RAM:
COPY FSDIR DF0:C
(exit from the CLI, insert your boot disk in the drive and reset the Amiga)
