CavePlot can make a quick backup of the survey data in memory (just in case) at certain times. These times are when CavePlot quits, when CavePlot loads another data file from disk, and when a new files is started (and the old file erased). Three check boxes are provided to tell CavePlot whether or not you would like to have a backup saved to disk automatically at these times.
Automatic backup files are normal CavePlot data files, except that the names for the files are fixed. The names are "CP-Quitbackup", "CP-OpenBackup", and "CP-NewBackup". These files are saved to the same directory where CavePlot is located.
If a "CP-QuitBackup" files exists in the same directory as CavePlot, then it will be loaded into memory when CavePlot starts up. In this way, when you quit CavePlot and then start CavePlot again later, CavePlot will automatically save then reload the survey data for you.
Backup files overwrite themselves, so if you have a backup file you want to keep, you should either rename it (from the Finder) or move it to another directory.
