  16. 1)  What is X-Desk?
  17.  
  18. X-Desk is a free Windows 95 desktop manager that
  19. allows your workspace to be divided into six
  20. 'virtual desktops'.  X-Desk allows you to
  21. unclutter your workspace by running relatively
  22. few applications on each virtual-desktop instead
  23. of running all of the applications on a single
  24. desktop. This program would be most useful to
  25. those who typically run several applications at
  26. once and find that their workspace is difficult
  27. to navigate because of so many application
  28. screens and icons floating around.  Navigation
  29. between desktops is provided by pop-up menus in
  30. the Win95 taskbar icon area or by using selected
  31. hot-keys.

  35. This software is free of charge and may be freely
  36. distributed (Freeware).

  39. 3) New Features for Version v1.4
  40.  
  41.     1)  Hot-keys can be used to switch from
  42.         desktop to desktop.
  43.     2)  Applications running on the current
  44.         desktop can be moved to any other
  45.         desktop.
  46.     3)  A menu option is available to move all
  47.         applications from desktops two through
  48.         six to desktop one.
  49.     4)  Various X-Desk user-defined preferences
  50.         can now be set. 
  51.     5)  In popup menus, application icons
  52.         are now displayed adjacent to text
  53.         describing the application.

  56. 4)  Installation
  57.  
  58.     1)  If necessary, uninstall previous version
  59.         of X-Desk. 
  60.     2)  Extract the files from the .zip archive 
  61.         into a temporary directory (if you
  62.         already haven't).
  63.     3)  From the temporary directory, run
  64.         'Setup.exe' and follow the on-screen
  65.         instructions.
  66.     4)  By default, X-Desk will install a
  67.         shortcut to the executable in your
  68.         StartUp folder so that X-Desk will
  69.         automatically load whenever you start a
  70.         new Windows 95 session.

  73. 5)  X-Desk Settings
  74.  
  75. New for version 1.4 are user-defined options that
  76. govern the operation of some of X-Desk's behavior
  77. as a desktop manager.  When X-Desk is started, a
  78. 2x3 grid icon will appear in the Win95 taskbar.
  79. Right-clicking the taskbar grid icon displays
  80. X-Desk's main pop-up menu.  Selecting
  81. 'Settings...' from the menu displays a dialog box
  82. enabling the setting of several X-Desk options.
  83. These options are described below: 
  84.  
  85. -- 'Hot-Key Behavior'
  86.     (O)  'Switches to new desktop'
  87.         The hot-keys directly take the user from
  88.         one desktop to another, depending on the
  89.         exact hot-key pressed.
  90.     (O) 'Shows Pop-up menu'
  91.         The hot-keys display a pop-up menu
  92.         (similar to that activated by
  93.         right-clicking the taskbar grid icon) in
  94.         the upper left corner of the screen from
  95.         which the user selects the desktop to
  96.         switch to.
  97.     --  'Meta Key'
  98.         The Meta key is the first key of the
  99.         hot-key combination.  X-Desk allows you
  100.         to choose between ALT and CTRL keys as
  101.         the meta key.
  102.         (O) 'CTRL'
  103.             The hot-keys for this option are
  104.             CTRL+ARROW_KEY, where ARROW_KEY is
  105.             any of the four keyboard arrows (UP,
  106.             DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT).
  107.         (O) 'ALT'
  108.             The hot-keys for this option are
  109.             ALT+ARROW_KEY, where ARROW_KEY is any
  110.             of the four keyboard arrows (UP,
  111.             DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT).

  113. -- 'Left-(Double)Click Behavior'
  114.         (O) 'Left-Double-Click advances desktop'
  115.             Left-Double-Clicking the taskbar grid
  116.             icon causes the current desktop to
  117.             switch to the next desktop (e.g. from
  118.             2 to 3, 3 to 4...). 
  119.         (O) 'Left-Click Advances desktop'
  120.             Left-Clicking the taskbar grid
  121.             icon causes the current desktop to
  122.             switch to the next desktop (e.g. from
  123.             2 to 3, 3 to 4...). 
  124.         (O) 'Left-Click displays shortcut menu'
  125.             Left-Clicking the taskbar grid icon
  126.             displays a simple pop-up menu from
  127.             which the user selects one of the six
  128.             desktops.

  130. ---     [x] 'Always Show "Always On Top" Windows'
  131.             Some applications (like application
  132.             launchers, for instance) are meant to
  133.             be visible to the user at all times.
  134.             Selecting this option will (I hope)
  135.             keep applications with this property
  136.             visible on ALL desktops.  Depending
  137.             on the application with this
  138.             property, selecting this option may
  139.             or may not be successful in keeping
  140.             the application visible on all
  141.             desktops.  If in doubt as to whether
  142.             to use this option, unselect it.

  145. 6) Usage Notes
  146.  
  147. When X-Desk is started, a 2x3 grid appears in the
  148. taskbar icon area, each member of the grid
  149. representing one of six desktops.  The currently
  150. active desktop is highlighted in yellow, while
  151. the remaining five desktops are in gray.  The
  152. desktops are numbered from left-to-right,
  153. top-to-bottom (i.e. desktop 1 is in the upper
  154. left corner of the grid, desktop 6 in the lower
  155. right).  Resting the mouse pointer on the grid
  156. displays the current desktop number.

  159. -- Navigating Between Desktops with Pop-up Menu:  
  160.  
  161. Right-clicking the mouse on the taskbar grid icon
  162. causes X-Desk's main pop-up menu to appear.
  163. The pop-up menu items show the available
  164. desktops to switch to (Desktop 1, Desktop 2, ...,
  165. Desktop 6).  If one or more applications are
  166. running on a desktop, a right-facing triangle (>)
  167. appears next to the menu item, indicating that a
  168. sub-menu is available for this menu item.  If no
  169. right-facing triangle is present, no applications
  170. are running on that desktop (the desktop is
  171. empty) , and you may switch to the empty desktop
  172. by simply selecting the menu item.

  174. Selecting a menu item with a right-facing
  175. triangle displays a sub-menu listing applications
  176. running on that desktop.  Selecting one of the
  177. applications in the sub-menu switches to the
  178. desktop containing the application and activates
  179. that application.

  181. Additionally, a menu option entitled 'All
  182. Desktops' on the main pop-up menu allows the user
  183. to view applications running on all six of the
  184. desktops.  Selecting an application on this menu
  185. switches to the desktop that contains the
  186. selected application (assuming the application is
  187. not on the current desktop) and activates that
  188. application.  Also, in the 'All Desktops' pop-up
  189. menu, each application listed is followed by a
  190. number in parentheses, indicating the desktop
  191. that the application resides on.

  194. -- Moving Applications Between Desktops:
  195.  
  196. Applications on the current desktop can be moved
  197. to any of the other five desktops by selecting
  198. the current desktop (indicated by an 'X' to the
  199. left of Desktop menu item) in the popup menu
  200. described previously.  Assuming there are one or
  201. more applications on the current desktop, the
  202. sub-menu of the current desktop menu item
  203. displays a list of the applications.  For each
  204. application, a sub-menu can be activated with the
  205. heading 'Move To...', followed by a list of
  206. desktops. Selecting one of the desktops moves the
  207. application from the current desktop to the
  208. menu-selected desktop.  Applications can only be
  209. moved from the current desktop to other desktops.

  212. -- Moving All Desktop Applications to Desktop 1:
  213.  
  214. There may be times when it is desirable to move
  215. the applications of all desktops to a single
  216. desktop, such as when ending your Windows
  217. session.  To move applications from all desktops
  218. to desktop 1: a) make desktop 1 the current
  219. desktop; b) select 'Move All Here' from the
  220. 'Desktop 1' pop-up sub-menu. The menu option
  221. 'Move All Here' of the 'Desktop 1' sub-menu is
  222. only displayed when desktop 1 is the current
  223. desktop AND there is at least one application on
  224. desktops two through six.

  227. -- Navigation Between Desktops Using Hot-Keys:
  228.  
  229. Depending on the hot-key option chosen in the
  230. X-Desk settings (described previously), the
  231. hot-keys can be used to directly switch to
  232. another desktop or to display a pop-up menu from
  233. which a new desktop is chosen. With the 'Switches
  234. to new desktop' selected in the 'Settings...'
  235. dialog, the hot-keys switch to a new desktop
  236. according to which hot-key was pressed and which
  237. desktop is currently active. Using the taskbar
  238. grid icon as a reference, the LEFT and
  239. RIGHT-arrow hot-keys (modified with the Meta
  240. key) are used to switch the desktop laterally in
  241. the grid, while the UP and DOWN-arrow keys switch
  242. the desktop vertically in the grid.

  244. With the 'Shows pop-up menu' selected in the
  245. 'Settings...' dialog, pressing any of the four
  246. hot-keys will display a pop-up menu in the upper
  247. left corner of the screen.  The pop-up menu
  248. displayed is an abbreviated version of the X-Desk
  249. main pop-up menu, displayed by right-clicking the
  250. taskbar grid icon.  The operation of this menu is
  251. as previously described.

  254. 7)  Bugs
  255.  
  256. X-Desk may not work well with *all* applications.
  257. Although the author has successfully used X-Desk
  258. v1.4 with numerous applications, it is impossible
  259. to verify if X-Desk is compatible (i.e. works as
  260. intended) with every conceivable Windows
  261. application.  X-Desk may experience problems with
  262. non-typical applications, such as application
  263. launchers, or other desktop managers. However,
  264. the author has not detected any instances in
  265. which X-Desk v1.4 causes a system to 'freeze' or
  266. otherwise to perform in a drastically abnormal
  267. manner. However, your milage may vary.  
  268.  
  269. The only documented bug occurs when using
  270. hot-keys to navigate between desktops.  In order
  271. for the hot-keys to be recognized by X-Desk, a
  272. window (any window) must have the keyboard
  273. 'focus' (e.g. a window's title bar is highlighted
  274. and keyboard entry is directed to that window).
  275. It is possible under some circumstances that no
  276. window will have the keyboard focus.  In this
  277. instance, X-Desk cannot recognize hot-keys and
  278. will not react to the hot-keys.  The only way
  279. around this is to force the input focus to
  280. different window.  This can be done by clicking
  281. any window (or, say, the taskbar) to change the
  282. input focus to a window that can receive
  283. keyboard input. Alternatively, hitting the
  284. ALT+TAB key combination will also change the
  285. input focus and should do the trick.  The above
  286. problem occurs very infrequently and should not
  287. pose much of a problem for the typical user.

  311.  
  312. A special thanks is in  order to those who have
  313. used X-Desk v1.3 and have offered their
  314. suggestions for improvements to X-Desk.  Many of
  315. these suggestions (in one form or another) have
  316. made their way to v1.4.  
  317.  
  318. Since the author has other things to do besides
  319. play around with X-Desk, this is likely to be
  320. X-Desk's last release.  Nevertheless, if there
  321. are any major (and I mean major) bugs found in
  322. v1.4, I might consider updates to version 1.4 -
  323. but for bug fixes only.
