  62. 1.  About StepUp'98
  63. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  65. StepUp'98 (formerly StepUp'96) is a set of utilities designed to
  66. extend the Windows user interface.  When you install StepUp'98, 
  67. additional commands are added to the menus and taskbar of Windows, 
  68. making you able to work with Windows easier and faster.
  69.  
  70. The previous version of StepUp'98, StepUp'96, was featured in the
  71. May'97 issue of Windows Magazine, Superior Shareware section.  It
  72. was also selected as a Pick of the Week at the WinUser forum on
  73. CompuServe.  StepUp'96 was rated "four stars" (out of five) by
  74. Ziff-Devis Interactive.

  76. Features of StepUp'98 include:
  77.  
  78. o StepUp Menu, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  79.   containing a set of commands to process files or folders, open new
  80.   browsing windows, run files, access items on the Internet, etc.
  81.  
  82. o Folder Navigator, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  83.   allowing you to quickly go to the folder you recently visited.
  84.  
  85. o Menu Designer, which you can use to add new commands to StepUp
  86.   Menu, modify its existing commands to make them better suit your
  87.   needs, move menu items between submenus, etc.
  88.  
  89. o File Handler, offering you an alternative way to manage your files
  90.   and folders.  It makes you able, for example, rename a large group
  91.   of files by a mask in a single step; split a large file across
  92.   multiple diskettes; change the time stamp of a group of files, make 
  93.   a list of files to further print it out, etc.
  94.  
  95. o Taskbar Icons, offering you quick access to the items on the
  96.   Desktop when it's covered by many windows; the Fast Exit commands;
  97.   quick control of the AutoRun CD-ROM feature, and more.
  98.  
  99. o StepUp Control Panel, which you can use to control various
  100.   settings of StepUp'98 and Windows, such as the thickness of the
  101.   window borders, the boot options for Windows 95, history and
  102.   uninstaller lists, etc.

  104. o Context-sensitive Help provides a complete user's guide for StepUp'98.
  105.   Also included an automatic Setup utility, allowing you to painlessly
  106.   install and uninstall StepUp'98.

  108. o StepUp'98 may be used both on a single machine and on a network.
  109.   Each user can configure and use StepUp'98 independently on the
  110.   others.  Also included a policy template file for StepUp'98,
  111.   which may be used by system administrators to restrict most of its
  112.   features.

  119. NOTE: Registered users of any previous version of StepUp'98
  120.   (starting with StepUp'96 ver.4.01) may upgrade to the current
  121.   version FREE of any upgrade charges.  Please use the same
  122.   registration code to convert an evaluation version of StepUp'98
  123.   into the registered one.

  127. 2. System requirements
  128. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  129.  
  130. StepUp'98 is designed for operating systems Windows 95 and Windows
  131. NT (version 4.0 or higher).  1 MB (one megabyte) of free space on
  132. your hard disk is required to install StepUp'98.  There are no
  133. special requirements or recommendations except the obvious one: the
  134. better processor and more RAM your computer has the better StepUp'98
  135. will perform.
  136.  
  137. NOTE: throughout StepUp'98 documentation, "Windows" is used to
  138.   refer to Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.  In those few instances
  139.   where the operation of StepUp'98 under these operating systems
  140.   differ, an explicit operating system name is used.
  141.  
  142. StepUp'98 CANNOT be installed and used under the following
  143. operating systems:
  144.  
  145. - Windows 3.1/3.11, even if Win32s is installed
  146. - Windows for Workgroups 3.11, even if Win32s is installed.
  147. - Windows NT all versions prior to 4.0.

  150. 2. Installing and uninstalling StepUp'98
  151. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  152.  
  153. StepUp'98 comes with a Setup utility, which allows you to both
  154. install and uninstall StepUp'98.
  155.  
  156. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply copy StepUp'98 files onto
  157.    your hard disk to install it.  You MUST run Setup.exe to
  158.    configure your system and enable all components of StepUp'98.
  159.  
  160. To install StepUp'98:
  161. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  162. a) If you have obtained StepUp'98 as a compressed file, uncompress
  163.    the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on a floppy
  164.    diskette.
  165.    
  166. b) Open the folder containing the uncompressed set of StepUp'98
  167.    files and double-click on "Setup" (or "Setup.exe").
  168.    
  169.    NOTE: if a previous version of StepUp'98 already exists on the
  170.    disk, Setup may prompt you to restart Windows before the new
  171.    version may be installed over the existing one.
  172.    
  173. c) The Setup utility will suggest you the folder in which to install
  174.    StepUp'98.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other
  175.    location for StepUp'98 files.  You can also specify whether to
  176.    add StepUp'98 items to Start Menu and whether to create a
  177.    Desktop folder for StepUp'98 components.
  178.  
  179. d) The Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder and
  180.    configure Windows for using StepUp'98.
  181.    
  182. e) At the end of the installation procedure Setup prompts you to
  183.    enter your name and a registration code.  If you have purchased a
  184.    license for continued use of StepUp'98 and received your
  185.    Registration Code, you may enter it at that time, and the
  186.    evaluation version of StepUp'98 will be converted into the
  187.    registered one.  Otherwise, you may skip entering the
  188.    registration code and StepUp'98 will operate in the evaluation
  189.    mode.
  190.  
  191. f) After the installation is complete, you may delete the files from
  192.    the temporary folder, from which you were installing StepUp'98.
  193.  
  194. NOTE: If you had a previous version of StepUp'98 already installed
  195.    on the computer, you may wish to review the updated menu file
  196.    (installed as "Copy of StepUp.mnu"), and include its updated
  197.    commands into the active menu file(s) you were using before.  The
  198.    easiest way to do this is to open the active menu file with Menu
  199.    Designer, use its "File - Import" command to import the entire
  200.    file "Copy of StepUp.mnu", and then arrange the updated commands
  201.    the way you want them to appear in the StepUp menu.
  202.  
  203.    If you used System Policies provided by a previous version of
  204.    StepUp'98, you may also need to update the active template file
  205.    with the information contained in the updated StepUp.ADM file.
  206.  
  207. To uninstall StepUp'98
  208. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  209.  
  210. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete the files of StepUp'98
  211.    to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the procedure described
  212.    below to uninstall StepUp'98 and clean up your system
  213.    configuration:
  214.  
  215. a) Open Control Panel and then open the "Add/remove programs" item.
  216.    
  217. b) In the list of products which can be uninstalled find the line
  218.    "Chaosoft StepUp'98" and double-click it.
  219.    
  220. c) The "Uninstalling StepUp'98" dialog box will appear prompting you
  221.    to confirm that you want to uninstall StepUp'98.  You may choose
  222.    to deactivate all StepUp'98 components, delete its application
  223.    files, delete user files related to StepUp'98, and/or reset
  224.    StepUp'98 settings.  Click on the Help button in the dialog box
  225.    for more information on these options.
  226.    
  227. d) After the uninstalling procedure is complete, you may need to go
  228.    to the folder where StepUp'98 files were installed and delete
  229.    the remaining files.  If you are running Windows NT, you may need
  230.    to logoff and then log back on before Windows permits you to
  231.    delete these files.

  235. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software
  236. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  238. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  239. which you can "try before you buy".
  240.  
  241. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  242. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  243. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  244. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  245. copies of StepUp'98 provided that all conditions specified in the
  246. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
  247. in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  249. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  250.  
  251. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  252. licensed versions of this software (except for the registration
  253. reminders, displayed by the evaluation version after the evaluation
  254. period has ended).  Actually, it's the same program: you may convert
  255. an evaluation copy into a registered copy by entering your name and
  256. a valid registration code.  Similarly, a registered copy of the
  257. program may be unregistered by deleting the registration code or
  258. by just copying the program to another computer.

  260. Evaluation copies of our products are 100% fully functional.  We
  261. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
  262. whether or not they fit your needs.  Please understand that if you
  263. fail to register, and continue to use StepUp'98 beyond the
  264. evaluation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
  265. maintain its original functionality: some features may become
  266. disabled.  If you need more time to decide whether you want to keep
  267. the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the evaluation
  268. period.  However, we cannot afford to let you use the program
  269. without compensation.  In addition, it is unfair to our customers
  270. who do register to use the program.  We appreciate your
  271. understanding of this policy.

  291. How to purchase a license for use of StepUp'98

  294. StepUp'98 is licensed on the 'per-user', not a 'per-computer'
  295. basis.  This means that you may purchase a single individual license
  296. and use StepUp'98 on more than one computer (for example, a
  297. desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the only user
  298. of those computers and there is no possibility to use the Registered
  299. Copy of StepUp'98 by anybody else.
  300.  
  301. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  302. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  303. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  304. accessing the computer must be obtained.
