INSURANCE FOR LOST OR STOLEN CREDIT CARDS
Here's a good one cooked up by insurance companies called
credit card insurance. This "insurance" is supposed to
protect you against unauthorized charges should your wallet
and credit cards fall into the wrong hands. Unless you're a
credit card junkie (someone with 10 different cards ), don't
waste your money.
Under federal law, if your card is used without your
authorization, your liability is limited to $50 per account,
not per card per account, but, per account. So, if you are
an average credit card user, and you have three cards, your
potential liability is only $150. Plus, in the case of lost
or stolen cards, if you notify the card issuer before any
unauthorized charges are made, your liability is zero,
nothing, not a penny!
Consider the potential adult life span during which you will
carry credit cards. Let's say it's 40 years at $75 per year,
this considers the future value of the $50 these insurance
companies now charge. In your lifetime, you would pay $3,000
in insurance premiums.
Your potential liability and the probability of any
unauthorized use of your card are both very low. Also, the
chances of a card company trying to collect the $50's in
unauthorized charges is quite remote. So, as you can see,
credit card insurance plans are not worth the money.
