THE "FLOOR LIMIT"
Another element of the merchant's agreement is the
establishment of the store's "floor limit." A merchant's
floor limit is a dollar amount at which they must call for a
transaction verification number. For instance, if you want
to make a $80 purchase, and, the merchant's floor limit is
$75, they must verify your account with the credit card
service center.
If they fail to do so, the bank may not honor the charge if
there is a problem with the card, that is to say if the card
is stolen or over its limit, or, if the account is
delinquent or closed.
A merchant's floor limit will vary depending on their type
of business (retail, mail order, etc.), their regular
clientele and their product or service. With the inception
of electronic verification (the little machine through which
the merchant slides your card as it automatically dials the
verification computer), account verification is usually
automatic, regardless of the amount of purchase.
