  1. We have made some improvements to F-PROT since the release of the previous
  2. version:

  4.     The program now scans for JavaScript and VBScript viruses (including
  5.     those that are embedded in .html files), as well as .BAT-infecting
  6.     viruses, mIRC viruses (INI infectors) as well as the first .INF file
  7.     infector and both of the known .SMM viruses, which infect Ami Pro
  8.     documents.
  9.  
  10.     We have added heuristics for 32-bit Windows viruses, which should
  11.     detect the majority of new such viruses.  There is a possibility that
  12.     those heuristics may generate false alarms, so any unexpected reports
  13.     of possible unknown viruses in 32-bit Windoes executables (PE files)
  14.     should be confirmed.

  16.     Some viruses will replicate only in compressed form (LZEXE, DIET or
  17.     PKLITE), and if the infected files were unpacked, F-PROT might not
  18.     find the virus, as it only recognized the compressed version.  This
  19.     was not a problem for users, as the unpacked viruses did not
  20.     replicate, but this was a problem for us, as such unpacked viruses
  21.     have found their way into various virus collections used for testing,
  22.     and our failure to detect the (non-replicating) samples gave us an
  23.     artificially low score.  We have now changed the way we detect those
  24.     viruses to prevent this from happening.

  26.     The program can now scan for boot sector viruses in .TD0 image files.

  28.     We have speeded up the scanning of many files that we had been sent as
  29.     they took unacceptably long to scan.

  31. Some problems were found and solved after version 3.03 was released:

  33.     We solved the problem when running F-PROT under NT, which was reported
  34.     in the PROBLEM.TXT file in version 3.03, when the scanner quit too
  35.     early when scanning a huge number of files, such as a virus collection
  36.     with 130.000 infected files (which is the real-life situation where
  37.     this problem was first encountered).

  39. We have of course added detection/disinfection of more viruses, bringing
  40. the total number of viruses and destructive programs that F-PROT
  41. recognizes to over 23900.
