  77. This package contains the VENDINFO(TM) Basic Toolset, v1.50, by Rams'
  78. Island Software. The VENDINFO system allows the software author to
  79. communicate a great deal of product and distribution policy information
  80. to shareware distributors.  Vendors and BBSes can then automate
  81. distribution-rights testing, information extraction, and many aspects of
  82. package handling. This package includes the VendEdit editor for authors,
  83. VendPrcs processor for distributors, examples and test files.

  85. This version updates the VendPrcs processor used by distributors.  The
  86. corresponding update to the VendEdit editor will be issued when
  87. distributors have had time to obtain this version of VendPrcs.
  88. Improvements include WWW and FTP addresses for product, author, ordering,
  89. support; use of PKZIP 2.04g compression; XOR 'V' encryption of ZIPped
  90. portion of record to avoid conflict with BBS processors; several new
  91. processors and operating systems; various other improvements and bug
  92. fixes.

  131. ===== Installation =====================================

  133. To install the VENDINFO Basic Toolset, simply unzip or copy all files
  134. into a single directory, which will be devoted to VendEdit.  If you are
  135. an author, or you expect to create VENDINFO records for testing
  136. purposes, you should plan to leave all these files in that directory.
  137. If you are a distributor, and plan to use only VendPrcs, then it will
  138. eventually be appropriate for you to place VENDPRCS.EXE on your path,
  139. and many of these materials will not be needed after your
  140. familiarization with the toolset is complete.
  141.  
  142. Once you've installed this package:
  143.  
  144.    o  If you're an author, or wish to try out VendEdit, simply
  145.       execute the command "VENDEDIT" WHILE IN THE VendEdit DIRECTORY.
  146.       Select "Help", and read through the first few items in the
  147.       help index.  You should find all the information you need.
  148.  
  149.    o  If you're a distributor, or wish to try out VendPrcs, you
  150.       should begin by reading VENDPRCS.DOC.  For authors, the
  151.       basic VendPrcs functions are executed automatically from
  152.       VendEdit.

  154. You may also wish to obtain and install the VendView viewer. It is
  155. available for use without charge, but is packaged separately from
  156. VendEdit because it is also used by end users who have no need for the
  157. VendEdit or VendPrcs programs. VendView is generally obtainable as
  158. VNDVUExx.ZIP, where "xx" represents the version number. The next release
  159. of this product will use its new name, DizRevue, and the filenames
  160. DIZVUDxx.ZIP (DOS version), and DIZVUWxx.ZIP (Windows version).  If
  161. VendView for DOS is installed, the user of VendEdit will be able to make
  162. use of it in reviewing any VENDINFO.DIZ files that are created. It is a
  163. significant convenience.

  170. The evaluation ("shareware") version of the VENDINFO toolset is provided
  171. for evaluation only, on an "as is" basis.  The registered version is
  172. provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided all materials are
  173. returned, and -- in the case of the editor -- no products have been
  174. distributed with included VENDINFO files.  This toolset is intended for
  175. use by producers and distributors of shareware and similar products, who
  176. are assumed to be familiar with the use of software tools.  The included
  177. tools allow both production and evaluation of VENDINFO files, and
  178. provide all the capabilities necessary for the user to verify correct
  179. functioning of those tools for his/her purposes.  Users are advised to
  180. do so.

  210. copyrighted products of Rams' Island Software and are protected by
  211. United States copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.

  213. All rights not expressly granted here are reserved to Rams' Island
  214. Software.  The use or distribution of these products is expressly
  215. prohibited, except as authorized by the terms of this agreement.

  217. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile,
  218. disassemble, otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed
  219. program except as provided in this agreement.

  221. U.S. Government Restricted Rights:  Use, duplication, or disclosure

  232. for evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed thirty days.

  234. During this evaluation period, you may make full use of the VENDINFO
  235. toolset, with the following exception, applicable only to the VendEdit

  238.    You MAY NOT distribute VENDINFO.DIZ files that lack authentication
  239.    codes.  These codes are tied to your company name, and are produced
  240.    only by the registered version of VendEdit.  They are intended to
  241.    provide a level of source authentication for your VENDINFO.DIZ files.

  243. If you continue using this software after the thirty-day evaluation
  244. period, or wish to produce "authenticated" VENDINFO.DIZ files for
  245. distribution with your products, you MUST make the prescribed
  246. registration payment to Rams' Island Software.  (NOTE: Single-line
  247. BBSes which are not associated with a business, and which do not charge
  248. fees to their users, may register VendPrcs without charge; see

  252. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO USE OF REGISTERED VERSION

  254. The software and the disks on which it is contained are licensed on
  255. a non-exclusive basis to you, the purchaser, for your own use.  You
  256. are not obtaining title to the software or any copyright rights.

  258. If you have purchased a license to use the VendEdit editor, you may
  259. also make use of the VendPrcs processor for the purpose of verifying
  260. correct functioning of VendEdit and correct contents of the VENDINFO.DIZ
  261. files you produce.  Any other use of VendPrcs requires a separate
  262. license.  Similarly, purchase of a VendPrcs license allows you to use
  263. VendEdit to verify correct functioning of VendPrcs, but does not imply
  264. a license for other use of VendEdit.

  266. You may use the licensed software on a single personal computer system,
  267. and make as many copies as needed for backup and archival purposes.

  274. A fundamental goal of the VENDINFO system is that distributors must be
  275. able to rely upon automated testing to determine whether or not they
  276. may distribute your products.  Therefore, any VENDINFO file which is
  277. distributed with your products must satisfy these conditions:

  279.    It must be an "authenticated" file, containing valid authentication
  280.    codes issued to you under your company name, or a company name you
  281.    are authorized to use for this purpose.
  282.  
  283.    The "License for Use and Distribution" section must contain the
  284.    actual text of your license agreement, rather than a pointer to
  285.    some other document, and must include the following statements or
  286.    their equivalent: "The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby
  287.    incorporated by reference.  Any distribution satisfying all the
  288.    distribution requirements expressed in that data record is hereby
  289.    authorized." (This means that distributors will NOT have to consult
  290.    the "License for Use and Distribution" text itself, UNLESS you select
  291.    "See Attached Text for Additional Requirements" in the data record.)

  293. The distributor also needs to be able to use the information you
  294. provide in the VENDINFO record without worrying about violating your
  295. copyright on the descriptions therein.  As a condition of use of
  296. VendEdit, you also agree that every distributor shall have the benefit

  300.    product, you authorize the distributor's use of your unaltered
  301.    product descriptive texts without further permission.

  339. the shareware version of this product, and provided they claim no
  340. ownership of these products.
