- **GENERAL HELP**

- Click on a Patience game to select it. Next click on one of the Control
- buttons:
- ## Play ## commences the selected game.
- ## Demonstration ## the computer plays a sample of the selected game and shows
- comments upon what is happening. The demonstration may be
- paused at any time by holding down the Space bar.
- ## Help ## (or the Help key) displays this page.
- ## Rules ## describes how the selected game is played.
- ## Quit ## terminates the programme.

- During a game some different Control buttons are displayed:
- ## Change Game ## terminates the current game and shows the list of games.
- ## New Game ## re-starts the current game with a new deck of cards.
- ## Prompt ## the computer suggests a move.
- ## Stop ## terminates the current game or demonstration.
- Each Control button may alternatively be activated by pressing the key bearing
- the underlined letter.

- To move a card click on it, then click on the position to which you wish it to
- be moved. If the card you have clicked can be moved to only one position it
- may move automatically to that position before the second click. If you change
- your mind about moving a card after you have clicked on it, click in any blank
- area. A card overlapped by another may be displayed by clicking the //right//
- mouse button on it.

- If the packet of Stock cards becomes exhausted (and there are cards available
- in a discard or Rubbish Heap) click once on the position of the Stock to
- transfer the cards from the Rubbish Heap back into the Stock.

- If you reach a position where winning is only a formality, the computer will
- complete the game automatically where its rules describe it as `auto-finish'.
- Press the `U' key to undo or take back a faulty move.

- **GLOSSARY**

- BASE CARD The first card laid on a Foundation.
- BUILDING Placing cards on Foundations or Depots in some form of Sequence.
- COLUMN Cards placed vertically one above the next.
- CHOCKERED Describes a card which is blocked by other cards and which, by
- the rules of the particular game, cannot be used for packing or
- building.
- DEPOT Packet of cards, overlapping vertically or horizontally. Those
- which are face up are normally in some form of Sequence.
- EXPOSED CARDS Cards which are face up and not covered by another.
- FAMILY All cards of the same suit.
- FAN Cards arranged in open formation, like a fan. The right hand
- card is the Exposed one.
- FOUNDATION Where a Packet is started that forms a required Sequence.
- LAY-OUT The original order in which the cards are laid on the table.
- MARRIAGE Two cards of consecutive value placed together.
- PACKET A pile of cards, face up or down.
- PACKING Placing cards on the exposed ones in the Lay-out.
- ROW Cards placed horizontally side by side.
- RUBBISH HEAP Discard pile or Packet of temporarily unusable cards.
- SEQUENCE Cards following one another in proper rotation, but not
- necessarily of the same suit.
- STOCK A number of cards counted out at the beginning of a game, and
- packed apart to be used as directed by the particular rules of
- the game.
- VACANCY An empty space created in the top row of the Lay-out.
- WAIVING Lifting a card and using the one immediately below.
