  7. »CL0:This years World of Amiga show was
  8. held in the more glamourous locale of
  9. Kensington Town Hall, after convincing
  10. my parents they wanted to look around
  11. Kensington, Zikes/A51 and I got free
  12. transport to our second Word of Amiga
  13. show.
  14.  
  15. First impressions of the venue were
  16. good, the actual show was a lot more
  17. roomy than last years Novotel venue.
  18. Amiga themselves had a large video
  19. screen showing demos of OS 3.5, the
  20. Video from Annex's now infamous Amiga
  21. theme song, and the obligatory 'boing'
  22. demo, as well as, surprisingly, a few
  23. scene demos which were spotted by
  24. Zikes. Jim 'last best hope' Collas was
  25. notable only by his absence, Petro was
  26. there but most of the time he seemed
  27. to hide this year, maybe he was afraid
  28. of the Linux haters :) Also on display
  29. was the Amiga NG case, although
  30. unfortunately no demos were running,
  31. The case looks kind of like a 3DO, but
  32. better. It has room for 3 PCI slots,
  33. and there is talk of a higher spec
  34. model with at least 5. Amiga also had
  35. that somewhat tacky but also
  36. irresistible Amiga collectors items.
  37. Amiga Cola, Amiga playing cards,
  38. Cigarette Lighters, Cuff links, Pens
  39. and many other bits and pieces were on
  40. sale for over-inflated prices.
  41. »CL2:The conferences scheduled this year
  42. were not, in my opinion, as
  43. interesting as last years. The Amiga
  44. on a card crew from Siamese did not
  45. make an appearance, neither did there
  46. long promised hardware. One conference
  47. that was particularly interesting was
  48. a talk on next generation CPU's, this
  49. went into depth about the design
  50. features and various
  51. advantages/disadvantages of several
  52. possible hardware partners for the
  53. Amiga MCC.
  54.  
  55. The rest of the show could have
  56. benefited from a little more
  57. organization. The Games Arcade from
  58. Clickboom never got operational,
  59. although it was possible to play
  60. T-Zero there (and a fine game it is
  61. too) there was no competition as
  62. originally planned. There were free
  63. 'official guides to Quake' being given
  64. away just for playing, which was nice.
  65. The internet Cafe did not work and
  66. some talks were rescheduled without
  67. notice. One of the most interesting
  68. exhibitors has Amiga Active, a group
  69. of hard core amiga lovers who plan on
  70. bringing out a new monthly glossy
  71. magazine, the idea being they want to
  72. be first to the Next Gen Amiga market,
  73. good luck to them. Their stand also
  74. had a beta version of Ami-Wipeout
  75. running surprisingly fast on a PPC AGA
  76. Amiga. Other exhibitors included
  77. Photogenics, showing a now very
  78. impressive looking latest version,
  79. Amiga format showing a nice collection
  80. of Amiga models from A1000 to A4000
  81. and the usual mixture of user groups
  82. and clubs from around the UK. Of
  83. interest to coders and would be coders
  84. like myself was a new utility from
  85. Coyote Flux. This little beasty
  86. converts 680x0 assembler code into PPC
  87. native code. How well it works remains
  88. to be seen but according to the
  89. leaflet it is a fairly comprehensive
  90. utility.

  92. This year the Amiga tribute band Annex
  93. played twice, and I was witness to one
  94. such performance. The group did seem
  95. to mime, and many people are sceptical
  96. about Annex, but I have to say I like
  97. them, after all, what other computer
  98. has a tribute band? The last event I
  99. was witness to was the AA Awards, the
  100. magazine journalist Ben Vost and the
  101. Author of the E-mail client YAM
  102. received a glass boing ball and some
  103. flowers, oh and a kiss from some Amiga
  104. woman :) unfortunately I had to leave
  105. before Mr. Collas joined the fun live
  106. via video-link. the presentation gave
  107. away the hardware partner as Transmeta
  108. (although this is still not official)
  109. and was cause of much debate on the
  110. net over the next few days.

  112. »CL0:Overall this Years World of Amiga show
  113. was an improvement on last years, but
  114. was still lacking organization. the
  115. Year 2000 World Of Amiga show should
  116. be bigger and better than ever
  117. considering the MCC will be out by
  118. then (and if it isn't I don't expect
  119. that there will be a show) hopefully
  120. the organisers can learn from the
  121. mistakes made this year and make next
  122. years show the best yet. And how about
  123. them organizing some demo coding
  124. events? If demo groups were given
  125. cheap-rate facilities and Amiga
  126. offered a cash prize I'm sure the show
  127. would attract even more visitors
  128. from around the world.
