  8. Official Eurochart under the Depth
  9. label - amazing.

  11. This has to bring up some memories
  12. now, hasn't it? Oh yeah!
  13.  
  14. I remember when I first heard about
  15. the idea of taking over the Eurochart.
  16. It sounded crazy to me. The Eurochart
  17. had always stood for me as a unique
  18. chart, much better than the rest - and
  19. even better after the Static Bytes
  20. staff decided to make it system
  21. friendly.
  22.  
  23. However, as it turned out, we in Depth
  24. were apparently the only ones
  25. interested in not letting this
  26. instutution of its own just die. A
  27. team of five people in Depth gave
  28. their commitments - among them
  29. Bakerman/Depth - haha!
  30.  
  31. Anyway - it was soon to be found out
  32. that the dear Estrup had lost al the
  33. source during an HD crash. Therefore,
  34. Quedax from our group bravely
  35. challenged faith, and decided to write
  36. the code once again from the bottom in
  37. plain 100% system friendly amiga ASM.
  38. A huge task indeed - the source of
  39. today is 6.300 lines!

  41. This little extra thingie costed us a
  42. further delay of 6 months, which quite
  43. annoyed Impact DK, who had been kind
  44. enough to make a nice intro - although
  45. a big huge in size - for the Official
  46. Eurochart issue 28.

  48. After having received the code from
  49. Quedax - I think I died! At that time,
  50. my knowledge of any machine
  51. instruction on any platform was
  52. limited to absolutely nothing. Quedax
  53. helped me a lot in getting acquianted
  54. with this, and I must have used at
  55. least 200 hours of lessons in just
  56. making what takes me as little as 10
  57. hours for an issue today!

  61. I put together a quite nice votetool
  62. in C. The tool of today is the fourth
  63. revision of it - and it's really
  64. great! I'm sure, that if the other
  65. chartmakers saw it, they'd envy us! At
  66. least I hope so - hehe. This also
  67. minimized the time for counting a vote
  68. - and made the process of keeping
  69. track of infotexts, groups, and
  70. pictures of all the entries incredibly
  71. easy. I'm quite proud of this tool,
  72. actually!

  74. The status of the chart today compared
  75. to issue 28 is remarkably unchanged,
  76. IMO. Although we have lost some of our
  77. status as thee chart, my feeling still
  78. is that many sceners really read this
  79. chart. The only problem that we suffer
  80. from, along with all the other charts,
  81. is the immense lack of voters. This
  82. has the sad but natural explanation
  83. that fewer and fewer sceners are left
  84. - and many of them aren't that engaged
  85. in the scene anymore. However, around
  86. 100 steady voters faithfully use some
  87. of their time to fill a sheet in one
  88. form or the other. Bien!

  90. As for me - I've also myself become
  91. much less engaged in the scene than in
  92. December'96, when issue 28 hit the
  93. streets. However, as the time
  94. consuming is limited for an
  95. experienced maineditor - I will be
  96. just a faithful towards this chart as
  97. all of you voting and reading guys.
  98. Don't worry. Now go enjoy this brand
  99. new issue with quite a few articles -
  100. right now - I'll pack my bags and find
  101. a flight to Geneva, Switzerland,
  102. wherefrom I'll be the maineditor the
  103. next 12 months while writing my thesis
  104. at CERN. Enjoy reading, while I'm
  105. taking of Copenhagen Airport,
  106. transitting in Charles de Gaulle, and
  107. finally arriving in Geneva.
