MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING DOOM V1.666!!!
or DOOM II v1.666!!
(tho DOOM v1.2 will work also, but why not update?)
**** What is DooMenu:
DooMenu will allow IPX network, modem, and null-modem play, or stand
alone play quickly and easily thru a menu which is far better than the one
packaged with Doom and Doom ][. DooMenu allows you to choose coorperative,
or deathmatch with respawn or no monsters on or off, it can load a save
game, or use an external WAD file. It will ask you for the skill, episode,
episode map, number to dial, and weather to disable call waiting. It can
store up to 9 different default friends for speed dialing. DooMenu now
supports DEH files to be used with DeHacked. DooMenu supports -altdeath,
-timer, -nomonsters, -fast, a wad rating system, -turbo, and much more. The
Doom setup does not support most of these commands. DooMenu will also search
thru WAD files for the correct map/episode for easy play! It will even load
multi-pwads!
**** How to Start:
Just type DOOMENU and follow the instructions.
After you have configured doomenu, all you need to do is to type DOOMENU
and it will load up and ask you a series of questions. Answer them and
eventully it will load up ipxsetup.exe, doom.exe, or sersetup.exe with the
proper parameters.
If you ever need to reconfigure DooMenu just type
DOOMENU /C
If you want to change the colors to your liking type
DOOMENU /COLOR
**** HELP! DooMenu is screwing up and I can't figure it out!
Try typing del doomenu.* and unzip the orginal again. Sometimes that seems
to help. If it still does not work, leave me a comment on internet.
**** Explain How DooMenu use external WAD files?
DooMenu looks in the user defined wad directory for all wad files
besides the main doom wad file. If any are found it adds the option to load
an external wad file at the episode prompt. Once you select this you are
given a list of all wad file in the dir. Use the arrow keys and highlight
the one you want and then it will use that wad file in to play. Make sure
the person your playing with also has loaded the same wad file. Once you
have selected the wads you want, if you tell it to doomenu automatically
looks in the wad file to find the first level the external wad edited, and
then automatically warp to that level. DooMenu will also record the number
of times each of wad you have has been played, so it will be easy to spot
wads you haven't tried yet. This will be stored in DOOMENU.WDI. Sadly
shareware Doom v1.666 does not support loading external wad files so you
will either have to registered Doom or change to doom v1.2. If you find that
you can't get wads to work and have read the docs fully, leave me a comment
and maybe it's not you.
**** Explain How DooMenu use DEH files?
First off DooMenu and DEHACKED by Greg Lewis will only work with the
registered version of Doom. DooMenu looks in the user defined DEH directory
for all DEH files. Once you select the option to load a DEH file you are
given a list of all wad file in the dir. Use the arrow keys and highlight
the one you want and then it will use that DEH file with the DEHACKED
exectutable which must be in the user defined DEH directory. Make sure the
person your playing with also has loaded the same DEH file. If you find
that you can't get the DEH files to work and have read the docs fully, leave
me a comment and maybe it's not you.
**** Does DooMenu support different SERSETUP's not made by ID?
Yes. It will send the commands as normal to sersetup.exe, so just name
your new sersetup to sersetup.exe. If you need to add an command line option
to sersetup everytime, for example you need to send -14400 then just type
'DOOMENU -14400'. You can pass up to 9 commands thru doomenu to the new
sersetup.
**** Sometimes I get a warning message about my command line being long?
I am telling this to tell you about a MAJOR problem you will almost
definatly ecounter if you use DOOM v1.2 with DOOMENU or any other DOOMENU
clone. What is this problem? I'll tell you. There are major bugs in
passing more than 80 characters command lines to doom v1.2 or sersetup, like
doomenu can. With the ability to load more than one external wad file its
easy to go far beyond 80 characters. I think DOS v6.0+ (5?) and 4DOS can
support command lines more than 80 characters, but it seems that DOOM is not
reconizing them. Anyways I am just warning you that there will be error if
you try to do TOO much. DooMenu will beep at you and display a warning
message if this occurs so if that never happens you will be fine. In v1.666
there is a @RESPONCE file which removes the 80 barrier which DooMenu fully
supports. There is an error when using 80+ char, you need to include all
commands in the @REPSONCE if you use @RESPONCE w/ sersetup. The other
commands are ignored. This was first pointed out by Scott Andrews, and
later the solution to fix it was shown to me by Raymond Chi. If anybody
wants to waste his time you should report this to ID, because it is a bug in
DOOM/SERSETUP.
**** Can I record a demo game w/ doomenu?
Yes, all you have to do is type
doomenu -record demo.dem
"demo.dem" may be any file name. If you want to record a multi-player
demo make sure each person in the link also type -record. You may
also, as explained in the readme.txt, add -maxdemo xxx to increase
the amount of memory. See the README that was packaged with doom for
more details.
**** How do pay tribute to this semi-godlike shareware author?
For full details of registered please view DOOMENU.REG. By registering
you can receive, if you wish, the source code (written in Turbo Pascal v7.0)
to the latest copy of DooMenu, and the lastest copy of DooMenu. DooMenu has
ABSOLUTELY no delay or code that inhibits the performance of DooMenu, so
there is nothing I can do to make a "registered" DooMenu. I believe that
why should I take months of work to create a copy of a potentially good
program, then hamper it with delays or prevent certain options. From the
start I have released the best possible program I could, even tho I may keep
some people from thinking about registering DooMenu. Thanks for your
support.
The very least you can do if you have internet access is just to leave me a
message expessing your opinion of DooMenu. My internet address is found
at the end of the this file, or in the program.
**** Do you have any thing else to say?
I would like to thank everyone on internet for helping me with ideas on
how to improve DOOMENU, and of course for those that registered with DooMenu
with me. I am amazed at internet's ability for mass information, and how
that it is only getting bigger. I'd also like to thank ID, alt.games.doom,
and the sysop of infant2.sphs.indiana.edu for obvious reasons. I'd like to
thank Greg Lewis for writing DeHackEd and making another util that makes
doom once again interesting. I'd also like to thank Rob Verenna for
making/hacking that pretty little PCX file displayed when you reconfigure.
If you find any errors or have any suggestions get in touch, but try to make
sure that you have the newest version. See the top of this file for location
on where to get it on internet. If you have the newest version, contact
me on internet at 000082937@ucis.vill.edu
