  11. This document describes Progressive Networks' RealAudio Player.

  18. On-line help is available for the RealAudio player in a Windows
  19. help file called RAPLAYER.HLP

  22. Installation
  23.  
  24. There are two different RealAudio Players available for Windows:
  25.  
  26. * RealAudio Player for Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11
  27.   The installer for this player is called RA16_20.exe
  28.   This is a 16 bit Windows application.
  29.  
  30. * RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  31.   The installer for this player is called RA32_20.exe
  32.   This is a 32 bit Windows application.  It requires a
  33.   32 bit winsock.

  35. To install, execute the installer under Windows.
  36. If you want to control where and how RealAudio is installed,
  37. use Custom Setup.  The default installation location is
  38. C:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  39.  
  40. The RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  41. consists of the following files:
  42.  
  43. In C:\RAPLAYER (or the directory specified under Custom Setup):
  44. RAPLAYER.EXE, RAPLAYER.HLP, README.TXT,
  45. START.RAM, COMPLETE.RA, THANKYOU.RA

  47. In Windows System directory:
  48. RA32.DLL, RA3228_8.DLL, RAGUI32.DLL

  69. System Requirements
  70.  
  71. To play RealAudio files, your system must meet
  72. the following requirements:
  73.  
  74.    * 486/33 SX or better PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  75.      Windows NT or Windows 95
  76.  
  77.    * 8 megabytes RAM.
  78.  
  79.    * 2 megabytes free disk space.
  80.  
  81.    * A sound card with a Windows Sound driver.
  82.      (The RealAudio Player is not compatible with the
  83.      PC Speaker program or other software programs which
  84.      simulate a sound card.)
  85.  
  86.    * An Internet Connection. Either a direct connection
  87.      or a 14.4 Kbps or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  88.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.
  89.  
  90.    * RealAudio for Windows 95 or Windows NT requires a
  91.      32 bit winsock.
  92.  
  93. RealAudio now offers 28.8 content.  To listen to
  94. RealAudio 28.8, you need:
  95.  
  96.    * 486/66 DX or better running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  97.      Windows 95, or Windows NT.  
  98.  
  99.    * An Internet Connection.  Either a direct connection
  100.      or a 28.8 Kbps or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  101.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.

  105. New Features
  106.  
  107.   * RealAudio 28.8 - RealAudio 28.8 is a new algorithm that provides
  108.    enhanced sound quality to all people who have a 28.8 Kbps modem
  109.    or better connection to the Internet. This near-FM (monophonic) 
  110.    sound quality greatly enhances the clarity of music and voice 
  111.    delivered in real-time over the Internet.  RealAudio 28.8 is now 
  112.    available for Windows 3.1 users who have 486/66 computers and 
  113.    28.8 Kbps modems.

  115.   * Plug-in - The new RealAudio Plug-in allows content creators to 
  116.     seemlessly integrate RealAudio directly into their Web page 
  117.     layouts. RealAudio for Windows 3.1 now supports the RealAudio 
  118.     Plug-in.

  120.   * Firewall Proxy Support - RealAudio supports the RealAudio
  121.     Proxy allowing safe access to RealAudio content through firewalls.

  126.   * TCP-only Audio Delivery - RealAudio supports receiving audio
  127.     via TCP-only.  If your site blocks UDP delivery, please select
  128.     the TCP-only option from the Network Preferences, available under
  129.     the option menu.  Do not use TCP-only mode when you are using a 
  130.     dial-up connection.

  144. Sound Quality
  145.  
  146. Audio is transmitted to the RealAudio player in RealAudio
  147. format.  The player then by default produces 16-bit
  148. 8 Kilohertz sound. If you hear garbled audio then you can change
  149. the kind of sound the RealAudio player produces.  To change the
  150. kind of sound produced, please pull down the "View" menu and
  151. choose "Preferences". Select "Advanced" and you will see toggle boxes
  152. for "use 8-bit" and "use 11 kHz":
  153.  
  154.    * 16-bit  8 Kilohertz (default)
  155.    *  8-bit  8 Kilohertz (select use 8-bit)
  156.    * 16-bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 11 kHz)
  157.    *  8-bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 8-bit and use 11 kHz)

  159. If you receive poor quality audio, please see our 
  160. FAQ entry on audio quality by going to 
  161. http://www.realaudio.com/help.html and selecting FAQ.  From there,
  162. select the "Audio Quality" entry.
  163.  
  164. Please note that to receive RealAudio 28.8 you should have at least
  165. a 19.2 Kbps connection to your Internet Service Provider.  In a
  166. 19.2 Kbps connection you may hear slight gaps in the audio.
  167.  
  168. Dial-up users should be sure to keep the network connection preference
  169. as UDP (the default).  In TCP mode, no audio packets are lost,
  170. but their arrival may be late enough to cause gapping in the audio.
  171. TCP mode is useful when you are directly connected (via a
  172. local area network) to the internet.

  176. Known Problems
  177.  
  178.    * Having large applications open may prevent the RealAudio
  179.      installer from executing.  If this happens, please close
  180.      all other applications and then install.
  181.  
  182.    * Starting or quitting large applications while playing
  183.      RealAudio can cause some brief disruption of the playback.
  184.  
  185.    * Playback on some 486/25 SX computers does not work properly.
  186.  
  187.    * The user interface during playback of 28.8 content on slower
  188.      systems may have slow response time.  Performance of other
  189.      applications may suffer during playback.  To improve system 
  190.      performance select the General tab from the View|Preferences menu
  191.      and adjust the Best Audio Quality/Lowest CPU Usage slider.
  192.  
  193.    * The 16 bit RealAudio Player does not work correctly under Windows NT.
  194.      If you use Windows NT, please use the 32 bit RealAudio Player and
  195.      a 32 bit winsock.

  199. Browser Upgrade
  200.  
  201. After you upgrade your browser, you may lose the configuration 
  202. information for the RealAudio player. The easiest way to 
  203. re-configure your browser is to re-install the player.
  204. Alternatively, you can manually configure your browser:

  206.    * Viewer name: c:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  207.    * Mime Type: audio
  208.    * Mime Subtype: x-pn-realaudio
