The Syrians lost most of their territory in the Golan Heights in the wars of 1967 and 1973. In 1976 they invaded Lebanon and gained control of most of the country. The Israelis launched two operations into Lebanon in 1978 and 1982 in order to stop cross-border attacks. The area was cleared of terrorists and the Israelis inflicted humiliating defeats on the Syrian forces. On each occasion the Israelis withdrew and set up a buffer zone to protect their border region. Tension has increased recently with the deployment of Syrian forces in southern Lebanon and the Golan Heights. Syria has continued to seek alliance with other Arab states that surround Israel and to aid Palestinian terrorists. Since the end of the civil war in 1990 terrorist raids have been frequent. Retaliation by the Israeli army has caused heavy Syrian casualties. This has been used to justify an all out attack on Israel.

The Syrian forces have been well and truly defeated in this magnificent victory. The Israeli prime minister has sent his congratulations to the air force for their prominent role in the campaign. Damage to the Syrian infrastructure has left the government facing widespread unrest. Further military action is not expected for the foreseeable future.

Heavy allied losses have allowed the Syrians to surround our forces on the Golan Heights. They have secured air superiority in the region due to the pathetic performance of our F16 pilots. Further resistance is considered futile. From midnight tonight there will be a ceasefire, our forces will withdraw and our government will announce the loss of the Golan Heights. Those held responsible are not expected to survive.
