Increasing tension between Greece and Turkey has led to the escalation of military forces in Cyprus. Attempts by the United States to placate the situation have failed and a political solution is unlikely. The announcement of a new multi-billion dollar Greek-Cypriot air defence system has outraged the Turkish government. Despite the threat of a Turkish military response the Greek-Cypriots are determined to proceed with installation of the new system. Within the last few hours mobilisation of Turkish military forces has been detected along the UN buffer zone which divides the country. A Turkish invasion appears imminent.
