!Citation Reference Manager (ver. 3.0)
======================================
...Please note this program is SHAREWARE...
!Citation is a reference manager which allows the storage, searching,
sorting and formatting of references for direct output into technical or
academic works. It should prove useful to anyone involved in writing
papers or books which require extensive lists of references. It is now in
its 3rd iteration and includes most of the features present on most other
DOS/Windows/Apple commercial bibliography managers plus some more that
are only possible through RISCOS.
Generally collating citations proves to be the most tedious and error
prone part of technical or academic writing. Each publisher dictates that
submitted citations should be in a specific (and annoyingly unique)
format so that when one re-submits a paper to another publisher all the
citations have to be re-formatted. !Citation handles output in any format
specified by the user using a simple script language so that once a
subset of references has been selected from within the database, the
style output format can be altered ad nauseum and saved for repeated use.
Reference can be entered manually or via drag'n'drop from a text editor
and are assigned a reference type such as "Journal", "Book", "Thesis"
etc. Abstract field length is only limited by available memory and these
are stored in compressed form within libraries to minimize disc usage. In
addition, bulk importing of references from a plain or tagged (Refer)
text file is supported so that one can collect references on, say your
Psion/Pocket book or any PC as you go along, for later addition to
!Citation. Support is also provided for the direct import of Medlars and
BIDS computerized database output.
A combination of simple script commands (entered by menu selection) and
option fields allow precise specification of author format, page
numbering, author truncation, reference numbering and field ordering for
each of 12 reference types. The database can be flexibly searched by
author/subject/keyword and duplicate entries scanned out. A proforma or
format card can be used for repeating data entries to save typing and an
editable list of journals and keywords facilitate easy and consistent
data entry. In addition, the journal list can also hold usual journal
abbreviations which can be selected for automatic substitution in output
if required.
Scripts allows the application of effect tags to italicise, underline or
embolden specified sections of the reference output. These effect are
automatically translated to DDF (Impression), RTF (Rich text format) or
HTML style tags for direct import into applications which can understand
these formats. This allows easy and consistent style formatting of
references for use in popular RISCOS packages such as TechWriter,
EasiWriter and Impression and such output may even be transferred to
MSWord via RTF or used in Web publishing with HTML formatted output.
References can be output singly by dragging from the displayed entry or
grouped via a subset option. The selection of citation subsets is
facilitated by various search options as well as plain old manual
selection. !Citation will also scan text versions of manuscripts to
collate the citations contained therein ready for subset output.
Data is stored in dedicated library directories so it is easy to build up
libraries of different references and use them in !Citation by simply
dragging them to the iconbar icon. It also makes backup of such a
valuable commodity a doddle (so no excuses). Library size is only limited
by the disc size and speed of your machine (or your patience tolerance -
libraries with several thousand entries can take a while to process for
certain operations).
!Citation makes extensive use of the drag and drop facilities offered by
RISCOS and not available on other platforms. As well as file drag'n'drop
import, text can be freely dragged in and out of various fields for
editing in other applications as well as the dragging of author names for
in-text citations. The flexibility of the script options also allows
output in machine readable form as Tagged text, TSV or Pro-Cite files. In
addition, an archive facility is available to generate CSV files of
libraries for data transfer and allows upward compatibility of libraries
to later versions of !Citation.
The author is an academic who became frustrated at the lack of
availability of such a program for the otherwise excellent RISCOS system
- so he wrote one! !Citation 3.0 represents several years development
work and incorporates extensive feedback from both science and humanities
users.
