Some Information on BIDS
========================
This document refers to !Citation ver 3.0.
In BIDS (Bath Info. and Data Services) comprises several databases. The
articles in all the ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) citation
indices (science, social sciences, and the arts and humanities) use
identical article formats. The field labels quoted in the guide (with
translation to !Citation) are:
----BIDS--------------- ---------!Citation-------------------
TI title Title
LA language code Field A
AU author(s) Authors
NA authors' address(es) Not transferred
JN journal name Source
IS ISSN ISBN/Location
DT document type Reference type if applicable or Field A
AB abstract Abstract
PA cited patent(s) Not transferred
KP keywords plus Keywords
WA author keywords Field A
CR cited reference(s) Not transferred
RF research front(s) Abstract
Most use upper case characters except for the AB field. Abstracts have
been included since 1991 for most English language articles.
The DT (document type) field can have the following values:
Article
Art Exhibit Review
Book Review
Correction or addition
Discussion
Editorial
Film Review
Music Score Review
Record Review
Item about an Individual
Music Performance Review
Chronology
Letter
Meeting Abstract
Note
Fiction or Creative Prose
Script
Review
Music Score
Theatre Review
TV/Radio/VCR Review
Excerpt
Poetry
Dance Performance Review
Database Review
Press Digest
News Item
Reprint
Bibliography
Hardware Review
Software Review
Any item with "Review" in it is given a a "Review Article" reference
type. "Article" is translated to "Journal Article" and the rest don't
have an exact !Citation translation so they are put in Field A.
The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) data is updated weekly and
taken from about 7500 selected international journals. It is organised
into three Citation Indexes (SCI, SSCI and A&HCI) and contains
bibliographic details of articles etc including any references that are
cited. Since 1991 many entries have also included English language author
abstracts.
!Citation handles any BIDS files with the following format. It uses
"Record -" to find the start of a reference and the blank line at the end
as a stop delimiter.

Other database files that are recognised, though in some cases not fully
translated to !Citation fields, are...
British Library Inside Information (BLII)
-----------------------------------------
The data covers details of every major article in 10,000 of BLDSC's most
requested titles. It includes the first four authors, article title,
journal and issue details, the start page number and the ISSN.
Collection of data commenced in October 1992.
Compendex*Plus supplied by Engineering Information Inc. (Ei)
------------------------------------------------------------
The data, which will eventually go back to 1972, is updated weekly. It
covers over 2,600 international publications, most of them cover-to-
cover. Virtually all core engineering publications are included. Each
year, some 170,000 new abstracts are added to the database. 175
engineering disciplines are covered in depth.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS)
--------------------------------------------------------
The data, which goes back to 1981, is updated weekly. It covers over
2,600 selected international social sciences journals, covering the core
disciplines of economics, sociology, politics and anthropology. The
database consists of bibliographic details of articles and reviews from
journals, and of books and book chapters.
Eaamples of the file output is appended below. Try them and see.. it
might save some typing!

AB- The authors have identified that indium top surface without serious
roughness can be acquired by Ar+ sputtering even if substrate
temperature is as low as 300 C. In atomic force microscopy
observations, this surface exhibits a textured structure composed of
double atomic height step. Furthermore, the azimuthal dependence of
the coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS)
show two-fold symmetry with respect to <110> axis, which indicates
that the crystalline quality of this surface is quite high. 11 Refs.

From Sept '97 BIDS is offering an OVID interface. This is much easier to
use and data is still forwarded to the requester by Email however you
should set the format in the "Save" menu to "Reprint" before saving the
data. "Reprint" is essentially the same as the Medline Ovid output but
the format of the Source line is subtly different (don't you just love
"Standards"). Import using the "Reprint" option in the File Import window
and !Citation will automatically compensate for this.
That's yer lot.....
My thanks to Nick Kaijaks for researching this info...
