  1. HELP on !FontConv
  2. -----------------

  4. This application converts "WFN" fonts, which are supplied 
  5. with the CorelDraw Application of MS-Windows(TM) to 
  6. RISC-OS Outline Fonts.
  7.  
  8. There are some disadvantages when using these converted 
  9. fonts in comparison to purchased fonts. They are neither 
  10. hinted (that means, that they do not look good at small 
  11. scales, because additional lines within the outline are 
  12. not provided) nor have they scare fold lines (which helps 
  13. the Font manager to render the character to a specific 
  14. size - especially Brezier curves). You can work on these 
  15. problems yourself - just use the !FontEd Application 
  16. (Careware 7) !!! 
  17.  
  18. How to use:
  19. -----------
  20.  
  21. At first get a copy of the WFN files and convert them with 
  22. !PcDir (Careware 7), for example, on Archimedes Discs. 
  23. Start the !FontConv Application, which installs itself on 
  24. the iconbar. For converting the fonts there is (naturally) 
  25. a destination directory needed, and a seen !Fonts 
  26. Application is used. To put the converted fonts in another 
  27. directory just type <F12> and then SET Font$Prefix <Your 
  28. Directory> (e.g: RAM:$ when using a RamDisc).
  29. Then drag simply the WFN-Files from the filer onto the 
  30. !FontConv Icon (multible drag is possible). 
  31. Then the !FontConv Application takes over the whole 
  32. machine (Multitasking would get to complicated...).

  34. The Desktop graphics is cleared and the Postscript (TM)
  35. Fontname is stated, including points for easier conversion 
  36. to Risc-Os Names. 
  37. Simply type <RETURN> for accepting the name stated above, 
  38. type <#>and <RETURN> if you want to skip this Font, or 
  39. edit the fontname by typing and/or use the copy-key Option 
  40. together with the cursor keys...
  41. But keep in mind that the font name may only be 40 
  42. Characters long, so the arrows are provided (just in 
  43. case).

  45. Then you will see on the left side information on the  
  46. character being converted (BoundingBox and so on), and on 
  47. the right hand side, the outlines will be drawn. You can 
  48. interrupt the conversion of the actual font with escape. 
  49.  
  50. After having converting a font there might be some other 
  51. fonts in the same file and the same procedure will be 
  52. repeated... 
  53.  
  54. If it is the last font in the file the Application will go 
  55. back to Desktop and continue as a multitasking 
  56. Application.
  57. But if you made a "multible drag" then  it starts all over 
  58. again...
  59.  
  60. Sorry for the speed of this program, but it is only to be 
  61. used once on each font, so I did not bother... But you can 
  62. speed the calculations up a bit with the RMFASTER BASIC 
  63. Option !!!

  65. To improve speed further the programm changes to mode 0
  66. while rendering the chars!!!

  68. Another improvement is, that the system-variable
  69. <Convert$Input> controlls the input-procedure. That means,
  70. when <Convert$Dir> is set to "ON" you have to type the
  71. name of the font in yourself. If set to any other value
  72. the name of the RISC-Osfont will be the converted name of
  73. the Postscript-font. You can drag all the wfn-fonts onto
  74. the Convert-Icon and they will be converted one after the
  75. other without having to input the name...
