ARCHIMEDES CHARACTER DEFINER
COPYRIGHT LESLIE A HAY, MARCH 1989
Modified slightly to run from desktop with own palette by David Holden,
February 1993. If you don't like the colours modify the file !palette in
the application directory. This is a standard Wimp Palette file.
This program was written to aid in defining and examining the characters
from Ascii 32 to Ascii 255. All the program functions are available by
selecting with the mouse (any button), and in the case of character
selection, by either mouse or keyboard. Most icons are self explanatory,
with one exception, where lack of room meant cramming several functions
onto one icon - in which case, mouse selection still applies, but will
depend on which part of the icon is selected.
Icons exist for loading files, saving files, quitting the program, access
to operating system, resetting entire character set, copying the
displayed character to another character and one other mixture icon.
The mixed function icon, gives mirror left/right, mirror top/bottom,
reset the displayed character, rotate right and shift left. These
functions are more easily found by trial and error, but basically, the
centre portion (filled circle) does the reset, mirror functions are one
at each end of the icon, rotate is at centre top and shift left at centre
bottom.
The copy function is reached by clicking over the 'CHR$(??)=' box, and
while active, will place a copy of the current character to a selected
position within the character table.
When the program is first run (by booting from the disc), the character
set is saved to enable the reset all icon button to function correctly,
and these will be the characters presented when this resetting is done.
The current character is displayed in a large 8 x 8 grid, and this
character can be changed by selecting from the character table with the
mouse, or by pressing a keyboard key. Those characters not available on
the keyboard can only be selected by the mouse from the character table.
Pressing a mouse button over a character grid square will invert the
square, and redefine the character to suit the new shape. The on screen
displayed characters are all effected, but only if a screen write is
performed for the entire screen, or for an icon box. For example, if you
redefine the character 'A', then any time that text is written to the
screen, then the new shape will be used.
Information text is presented from time to time at the lower right
portion of the screen - this could be a prompt for a file name, or a
message that a file doesn't exist etc.
