  1. The Aïtos font is copyright 1996 Kevin Simpson & WCA Co.

  3. The terms and conditions relating to your use of this font are set out after
  4. this brief introduction in this text file. You are asked to read them
  5. carefully before installing or using the Aïtos font for the first time. All
  6. users are asked to read the section headed "Outputting/typesetting/
  7. imagesetting bureaux".

  9. * Special note to CD users
  10. Where references to deleting the font after the trial period  are made, you
  11. can obviously only delete it from your hard disk and not from the CD. For
  12. this reason the font is in an archive file to make direct installation from
  13. the CD difficult. Please take the license instructions in the spirit they
  14. were intended and only use the font for one trial period before de-installing
  15. and not using it again; unless a licence is sought at a later date.

  17. The Aïtos font represents many hours work and is not freeware. You are
  18. invited to try the font for 28 days and if you find that you like it and
  19. would like to keep it, you must register your copy. If you don't like it or
  20. don't want to pay for it you must delete all copies of it and not use it
  21. again. The registration fee you should pay depends on your circumstances,
  22. see the "Terms and Conditions" section below.

  24. Aïtos (a-ee-toss) gets its name from my mind, where it simply popped up one
  25. day whilst designing the "P".
  26.  
  27. It is definitely not a body copy font, that is to say it should be reserved
  28. for short and snappy bits of copy such as headlines, advertisements, titles,
  29. signs etc. Don't set a whole novel or news story in it. After saying that,
  30. however all situations are different and someone somewhere may find it
  31. useful for huge swathes of text. All rules are there to be broken, if you
  32. can break them sensibly and with feeling and subtlety you will produce
  33. something striking and off-beat. In short... experiment and be critical of
  34. everything.

  36. If you find an unusual or particularly interesting use for the font I would
  37. be very happy to receive examples.

  39. The Western Commercial Arts Co is a small graphic design practice producing
  40. top quality design at realistic prices. We are fully qualified and
  41. experienced with a cherry-picked a client base that is growing steadily. As
  42. well as conventional graphic design we produce typefaces for anyone willing
  43. to buy our time and expertise. Some typefaces are designed for pure
  44. pleasure, however. One of the Western Commercial Arts Co.'s employees is one
  45. of the very very few people in the world with both the creative/design
  46. training/qualifications and expertise as well as the technical "Acorn font
  47. knowledge" necessary to design and produce a fully working, properly hinted
  48. font through initial concept to finished product.

  50. More fonts will be made available (depending on the success of this trial)
  51. and a new organisation called Cybertype (©) may well be set up to distribute
  52. them. Initial trials and research shows that Cybertype should operate only
  53. on the worldwide web and will probably be not so much "launched" as much as
  54. simply "fizzle slowly into existence" without a huge amount of publicity.

  59. * Installation:
  60. To install the font simply copy it from the Zip archive into your fonts
  61. directory then reset your computer. If your fonts directory's name starts
  62. with "!" (for example !Fonts) then you can only open it by holding down the
  63. shift key whilst double clicking on it. If you have a "Messages" file in
  64. your fonts directory remember to update it by adding the name of the
  65. WCACoAitos font. Or using the program that made the Messages file again.

  67. If you are using a utility to enable you to use many different directories
  68. of fonts or font combinations then refer to the documentation for that
  69. utility for installation instructions.

  71. RISC OS 2 users will not be able to use the Aïtos font as it is supplied.
  72. Please write to Kevin Simpson, include the correct fee for the type of
  73. License you need and ask for a RISC OS 2 version.

  75. RISC OS 2 users are strongly advised to upgrade to the latest RISC OS
  76. version that will operate properly in their computers.

  101. If, after reading these terms and conditions, you do not agree to abide by
  102. them you must delete all copies of the Aïtos font and any associated files
  103. you may have.

  105. * Copyright:
  106. Copyright of the font, its data, "look and feel" and character shapes is
  107. retained by Kevin Simpson. Copying (other than for legitimate back up
  108. purposes), disassembling, reverse engineering, or changing/altering the font
  109. or its data in any way constitutes a breach of these terms, renders any
  110. copies of the font you have illegal and is a breach of international
  111. copyright law.

  113. * The benefits of registering the Aïtos font:
  114. On registering you will receive a full License appropriate to your type of
  115. use, and the Aïtos "expert" font on disk. Registering will encourage me and
  116. others to produce other quality original typefaces and will increase the
  117. choice of fonts available to computer users.

  119. When registering please make your cheque payable to "Kevin Simpson" and send
  120. it to the address shown above. You may wish to telephone or email to confirm
  121. the address is still current if you are registering some time after the
  122. release of this CD.

  124. * Distribution:
  125. Copies of the font may be distributed by individuals as long as the font is
  126. not altered in any way and this entire Read Me file accompanies it in the
  127. same Archived directory. Anyone receiving a copy of the font in this way
  128. must abide by these terms and conditions or delete all copies of the font
  129. they may have.

  131. * "PD" libraries and font emporium disks:
  132. Anyone wishing to include the font in a "PD" library or on any kind of CD or
  133. other disk with applications and other fonts can do so as long as no profit
  134. is made and any charge levied is for reasonable post and packing costs only.
  135. Please contact Kevin Simpson for the latest copy of the font before
  136. inclusion or disk mastering.

  138. It is expressly forbidden to include the font on any kind of disk or CD with
  139. fonts by other designers where fonts constitute the whole of or the major
  140. part of its contents.

  142. * Special note to CD users
  143. Where references to deleting the font are made, you can obviously only

  151. You are granted a Single User Stand Alone License to use the font on one
  152. stand alone Acorn computer and permanently connected printer for the

  155. send a cheque drawn on a UK bank, postal order or (at your own risk) paper
  156. UK currency for £12.50 sterling to Kevin Simpson. You may send the
  157. equivalent of £15 in any other paper currency. All users are asked to read
  158. the section headed "Outputting/typesetting/imagesetting bureaux".

  160. * Site License:
  161. If you wish to use the font on more than one computer at the same postal
  162. address a Site License must be sought. To obtain a Site License send a
  163. cheque drawn on a UK bank, postal order or (at your own risk) paper UK
  164. currency for £25 sterling to Kevin Simpson. You may send the equivalent of
  165. £35 in any other paper currency.  All users are asked to read the section
  166. headed "Outputting/typesetting/imagesetting bureaux".

  168. * Business Use:
  169. If you wish to use the font for profit-making, or in a profit-making
  170. business environment a Business Use License must be sought. To obtain a
  171. Business Use License send a cheque drawn on a UK bank, postal order or (at
  172. your own risk) paper UK currency for £25 sterling to Kevin Simpson. You may
  173. send the equivalent of £35 in any other paper currency.  All users are asked
  174. to read the section headed "Outputting/typesetting/imagesetting bureaux".

  176. * Business Use Site License:
  177. If you wish to use the font for profit-making, or in a profit-making
  178. business environment on more than one computer at the same postal address a
  179. Business Use Site License must be sought. The Business Use Site License
  180. allows you to use the font on more than one stand alone Acorn system and
  181. output devices at the same postal address. The Business Use Site License
  182. costs £55 UK currency, PO or cheque (£70 any other currency).  All users are
  183. asked to read the section headed "Outputting/typesetting/imagesetting
  184. bureaux".

  186. * Outputting/typesetting/imagesetting bureaux:
  187. The font may be encoded into PostScript document files by the licensee for
  188. the purpose of output at a bureau as long as any copies of the encoded font
  189. are purged from the outputting system after completion of the job and no
  190. copies are kept by the bureau. The font must not, under any circumstances,
  191. be supplied separately to the bureau for the purpose of outputting your
  192. document; to use the font the bureau must apply for a Business Use License
  193. or a Business Use Site License as set out above.

  195. * Charitable organizations:
  196. If you wish to use the font in a UK charitable organisation send £3 or its
  197. equivalent (to cover post and packing) to Kevin Simpson with a note on
  198. letterheaded paper clearly displaying your charity number stating what type
  199. of License you need. If you are not in the UK send proof of your charity
  200. status and £5 in UK currency or cheque drawn on a UK bank.
