- USING CfsReader
- ===============
- CfsReader is a read-only version of Computer Concepts' file compression
- program called Cfs. Computer Concepts Ltd. permit CfsReader to be freely
- copied and distributed.
-
- These notes describe how to look at other discs or filing systems, how to
- set up a temp directory and how to decompress files.
-
- If you give some-one a copy of CfsReader, we suggest you also give a copy of
- these notes. (In uncompressed form so that they can read them before trying
- to use CfsReader).
-
- LOOKING AT OTHER DISCS OR FILING SYSTEMS
- ========================================
- CfsReader is already set up to use ADFS disc 0. This is usually a floppy
- disc and should work on any Archimedes.
-
- To look at other discs or filing systems:
- 1. Load CfsReader.
- 2. Click Menu (the centre mouse button) on the CfsReader icon on the
- icon bar. This displays the CfsReader menu.
- 3. Move over the arrow to the right of the 'New Cfs' option. This
- displays a editable box. Type the disc name into this box.
-
- Typical entries are:
- ADFS:0 for ADFS disc 0 (The first floppy drive in the system)
- ADFS:4 for ADFS disc 4 (The first hard disc)
- SCSI:5 for SCSI disc 5 (The first SCSI hard disc)
- IDEFS:4 for IDE disc 4 (The first IDE hard disc)
- RAM for the RAMdisc (you can also use RAM:0)
-
- The A5000 actually contains an IDE hard disc but this is refered to by using
- ADFS:4.
-
- IF you are unsure about the filing system name, then click on the icon on
- the bar for the filing system you are interested in. Look carefully at the
- title for the filer window that this puts on the screen. The title is
- at the top of the window. The start of the title refers to the filing
- system. An example might be:-
- SCSI::ScsiDisc4.$
- The filing system is SCSI and the name of the disc is ScsiDisc4.
-
- Networks are more complicated and you should refer to the Compression manual
- for details.
-
- SETTING UP A TEMP DIRECTORY
- ============================
- CfsReader needs some space in a temporary directory to expand files. This
- space must be as big as the biggest file you want to decompress. Normally
- CfsReader uses a system file (called 'ScrapDir') which is available for use
- by any application. The means though that a System folder or alternatively a
- Scrap folder must have been seen by the system.
-
- If the disc containing ScrapDir is nearly full, there may not be enough
- space to decompress a file. You can easily reallocate the temp directory:
- 1. Load CfsReader.
- 2. Open a window onto the disc where you want to create the Temp
- Directory.
- 3. Display the CfsReader menu.
- 4. Move over the arrow to the right of the 'Temp Dir' option. This
- displays a save window.
- 5. Drag the CfsReader icon from the save window to a disc window.
- This has made a temporary change. If you want to make it permanent, click on
- the 'Save Settings' option on the CfsReader menu.
-
- You should note these points about the Temp Directory:
- > CfsReader must know about the disc/filing system you want to use
- ie. have a CFS icon for it. If not you will get a 'No Cfs' error.
- Looking at other discs is described above.
- > Using a slow device slows down file expansion. A hard disc or RAM
- disc is best. If possible, don't put the Temp Directory on a
- network as they are always relatively slow. See your Risc OS users
- guide for details on how to set up a RAM disc.
- > Allow enough space for the largest file you want to decompress.
- (Look at compressed files in a CfsReader window to see the
- decompressed size.)
-
- DECOMPRESSING FILES
- ===================
- Using CfsReader is easy - just use it like the normal filing system.
-
- To look at a disc's contents click on the Cfs icon on the icon bar.
-
- To decompress a file, drag its icon from the Cfs window either to another
- directory window or directly to an application.
-
- AND FINALLY THE SALES PLUG
- ==========================
- If you find CfsReader useful, you will probably want to buy the full
- Compression package. This lets you both read and write files and is as fast
- and simple as CfsReader. The current price is £29 + VAT and it is available
- from Computer Concepts, Gaddesden Place, Hemel Hempstead, Herts HP2 6EX or
- from any good Acorn supplier.
