  1. CPC emulator frontend
  2. =====================

  4. Use of the CPC frontend should be mostly self-evident, except that:
  5.  
  6. - to set printer output to file, you can either drag an existing file to
  7. the printer box, or drag the box to a filer window
  8.  
  9. - the PseuDOS file converter is not correctly operative; use !AmsToArc
  10. instead for the time being
  11.  
  12. - the slowdown situation is somewhat confusing.  Only self-paced
  13. emulation is available under !CPC.  This means only negative values for
  14. slowdown will work.  Positive values will have the same effect as
  15. negative values, however, and zero will have the same effect as -1 (no
  16. slowdown)
  17.  
  18. The frontend is now my responsibility, and so all comments should be
  19. addressed to me, as for the emulator itself.

  21. Please look inside the !CPC application inside the !CPC application (!)
  22. for more details on the emulator itself.  To look inside an application,
  23. press Shift while double-clicking on its icon.

  25. The following documentation for the frontend is out of date.  It will be
  26. updated one day...  The documentation for the emulator proper is in
  27. !CPC_Src.

  37.  !CPCFront Version 1.00 (28th January 1996)

  40.  CPCFront is a desktop front-end to the full version of Mark Rison's !CPC,
  41. an Amstrad CPC emulator for Acorn machines. Please note that from versions
  42. 1.00 onwards, CPCFront only caters for the full !CPC. Users of the registered
  43. 'test' version can use CPCFront version 0.05, which should be available on
  44. the !CPC registered pages.

  47.  Installation
  48. --------------

  50.  Copy the !CPCFront application to your hard disk or an empty floppy. Open
  51. up the directory (by holding down SHIFT and double-clicking with the SELECT
  52. button on the mouse). Then copy the !CPC application to that directory.
  53. Reboot the computer to make sure that all directory paths are set up
  54. properly.
  55.  Double-click on the !CPCFront application, and after a short while you
  56. should see the CPC icon on the icon bar.

  59.  Simple Use
  60. ------------
  61.  
  62.  To run the emulator simply click on the CPC icon with the SELECT button.
  63. However, you may wish to alter some of the many options (eg which type of
  64. machine to emulate). In this case click ADJUST over the CPC icon. The setup
  65. window will appear.

  68.  The Setup Window
  69. ------------------
  70.  
  71.  Here there are many options affecting the operation of the emulator.
  72.  
  73.   Machine Type
  74.                Choose which model of the Amstrad CPC range to emulate.
  75.  
  76.   General
  77.           Select which screen mode the emulator should run in, and the level
  78.           of 'slowdown' which should apply. Slowdown should only be raised
  79.           above zero if programs run too fast under the emulator.
  80.  
  81.   Directories
  82.               Open the directories containing snapshots, disk images and
  83.               PseuDos files here. You may also change the paths, if for some
  84.               bizarre reason you may want to!
  85.                Please note that at the moment CPCFront does not support the
  86.                defining of multiple paths.
  87.  
  88.   Filing
  89.          Choose which method of accessing files you wish. Use PseuDOS to use
  90.          snapshots and PseuDOS files, and AmsDOS to read disk images (.DSK).
  91.          Choose which disk image to load by entering its filename in the
  92.          input box. The file will be checked to make sure it exists and it
  93.          is a DSK image.
  94.          Note that if 'Extension ROMs' is selected on the Advanced window
  95.          (see later), then selecting AmsDOS also loads PseuTOS, which allows
  96.          snapshots, PseuDOS files and AmsDOS disks to be used together.

  98.  There are also three options at the bottom of the window :

  100.   Advanced..   : Bring up the 'Advanced Setup' window.
  101.   Save Options : Save all selected options (including those in 'Advanced..')
  102.                  to the !Config file inside the !CPC directory.
  103.                  Options do not HAVE to be saved to take effect.
  104.   Run !CPC     : Runs the emulator, the same as clicking with SELECT on the
  105.                  CPC icon.

  108.  The Advanced Setup Window
  109. ---------------------------
  110.  
  111.  This contains many options only relevant to the full version of !CPC. The
  112. main areas are :
  113.  
  114.  General
  115.          Interrupts  : Enable or disable interrupts. Generally a good idea to
  116.                        enable them!
  117.          Parity flag : Do you want the parity flag to be emulated? It is not
  118.                        used very often, and slows down the emulation.
  119.          R Register  : Similar to the Parity Flag, emulating the R register
  120.                        (responsible for random numbers) accurately is costly
  121.                        on emulation speed.
  122.          Extension ROMs : Select this if you want PseuTOS to be loaded up if
  123.                           'AmsDOS' is selected (under Filing) in the main
  124.                           setup window.
  125.          Debugging : Turn the debugging mode on or off.
  126.          Full BCD  : Choose to fully emulate the BCD arithmetic or not. This
  127.                      also slows down the emulation, but is necessary for some
  128.                      programs to work properly.

  130.  Sound
  131.          Full     : Full sound emulation, but at the moment the noise
  132.                     function is not reproduced accurately.
  133.          No noise : As above, except no attempt is made to reproduce noise.
  134.          None     : No sound at all.
  135.  
  136.  Screen
  137.          Colour   : Emulate a colour monitor.
  138.          Green    : Emulate a green screen monitor. Nasty on the eyes!
