Insert does one simple thing - it inserts characters where the caret is as if they had been typed.
You can either drop a saved textfile onto its icon or from Edit or anything else that saves text.
There are a three modes of operation which can be changed using the menu.
You can either set of the inserting as soon as the item has been dropped, keep it until the icon is clicked or keep it until the shift button is pressed whilst the pointer is over the icon (useful when inserting text into those horrible writable menu items!).
A feature I have just added (the first time I have changed this program in about six years!) is if you have the shift key depressed whilst dropping a file the pathname of the file will be inserted at the caret rather than the file itself.
I have also just changed it so it will accept any files rather than just text. This is so you can drop URL type files and others onto it.
I have again just changed it so if all goes wrong and you end up inserting the text in the wrong place a quick click of the icon stops 'typing'.
I hope you find this useful.
