README for !NetReader (v1.06)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before running !NetReader for the first time, you should read this file.
NetReader has been designed to enable schools and colleges to install on Acorn
networks and to allow public access logins. However, the first time NetReader
is used, it has a default global password of "None". If you know this password,
you can change it to something else - which network managers are recommeded to
do straight away. The side effect of this is that any potential hackers may
experiment with deleting files within NetReader in order for NetReader to
default back to "None" - which will then allow them to re-edit the password and
thus lock out the legitimate network manager.
To this end, I have disabled the global password in un-registered versions and
made NetReader revert back to being unregistered in the case of tampering with
it's files. This way, if unauthorised users do fiddle with it, they still won't
be able to edit passwords etc.
The downside of this (to non-registered users) is that you can't create new users.
To work around this, I have created an initial, single user called 'root'. The
default password of this user is "secret". Again, I would recommend changing this
if you plan to use NetReader on a computer than more than one user has access to.
The other security issue, is where to store the individual user directories that
NetReader manages. This is down to the individual users or network manager to
decide. You can contact me for additional help or recommendations on network
security issues if you like, or experiment with installing my !LockDir utility
(also available from the same place you obtained NetReader) or install the
user directories on a protected area of a ClassServer. Again, for more help on
installing on ClassServers etc please feel free to contact me.
