  2.                      LABELLER VERSION 2 - ReadMe file

  6. This text describes version 2 of my label program,  which offers much the 
  7. same  facilities  as  the old version but  is  fully  RiscOS  compatible.  
  8. However, for new readers, full instructions are contained in this file.

  11. Features
  12. ­­­­­­­­

  14.   *     Fully compatible RISCware (well, almost).
  15.  
  16.   *     Ability  to set the size of the label up to 4 inches wide  and  4 
  17.         inches  high.   Printing position,  paper advance  and  dimension 
  18.         checks are all taken care of.
  19.  
  20.   *     Operates  in two major modes,  "Type text" (also referred  to  as 
  21.         "direct")  where label text can be typed and edited in  a  window 
  22.         and  saved as a text file;   and "From file" (also  "mail-merge") 
  23.         where labels are printed from data in a text file.  This file can 
  24.         contain  data  for any number of labels and be  prepared  by  any 
  25.         editor, word processor or database.
  26.  
  27.   *     Prints on stock with 1, 2 or 3 labels across the page.
  28.  
  29.   *     Text  can  be  edited and printed left  or  right  justified,  or 
  30.         centred.

  32.   *     Printing in four horizontal pitches and three vertical pitches.
  33.  
  34.   *     Print  style  (for enhanced Epson-standard printers such  as  the 
  35.         Start LC-10)  can be any combination of  NLQ,  bold,  underlined, 
  36.         italic or alternate colour (if supported by the printer in use).

  38.   *     Can  print via the desktop printer driver,  so that printing  can 
  39.         be done in the background.

  66. Installation

  69. Simply  copy the application directory !Label to its preferred  place  of 
  70. residence, and print out the documentation and diagram if you wish.
  71.  
  72. The !Boot file defines a system variable <Label$Scrap> which is used when 
  73. performing mail-merge from a file which is not permanent (see later).  If 
  74. you perform this operation often you may wish to make this variable point 
  75. somewhere else, eg a scrap file on the RAM disc.  Alter the !Boot file to 
  76. suit.

  80. Running

  83. Double-click on the !Label application,  in the normal RiscOS  way.   The 
  84. Label icon will appear on the icon bar.  Alternatively, double-click on a 
  85. saved settings file in a directory viewer - Label will be run up and that 
  86. settings file loaded.

  88. The !Help application can be used to find out the functions available  on 
  89. the windows, if required.

  93. Menu options
  94. ­­­­­­­­­­­­

  96. Click  MENU over the icon bar icon or text window to obtain  the  control 
  97. menu.  The options available are:
  98.  
  99.   Info          The normal RiscOS-style information box.
  100.  
  101.   Files         Shows  the file names last used to load or save text  and 
  102.                 settings,  and  the type of printer driver  installed  if 
  103.                 there is one.   This box will also pop up when a file  is 
  104.                 loaded with no other effect (eg when loading a text  file 
  105.                 in  mail-merge mode) to indicate that the  operation  was 
  106.                 successful.    It  will  disappear  on  the  next   mouse 
  107.                 operation.

  109.   Settings...   This  opens the setting window,  which allows  the  print 
  110.                 format  and  type style to  be  defined.   The  selection 
  111.                 options available are:
  112.  
  113.                   Label stock           Choose  1,  2 or 3 labels  across 
  114.                                         the page.   The selected icon  is 
  115.                                         highlighted.
  116.  
  117.                   Justification         Choose left justified, centred or 
  118.                                         right justified    text.      The 
  119.                                         selected icon is highlighted.
  120.  
  121.                   Type style            Choose Normal for ordinary  draft 
  122.                                         print,   or  any  of  the   other 
  123.                                         options in combination  (assuming 
  124.                                         that    that    combination    is 
  125.                                         supported by your printer).  Each 
  126.                                         option  is marked with a star  if 
  127.                                         it is selected.

  129.                   Horizontal pitch      Choose 5, 10, 12 or 17 characters 
  130.                                         per inch.  The selected option is 
  131.                                         marked.
  132.  
  133.                   Vertical pitch        Choose 4,  6 or 8 lines per inch.  
  134.                                         The selected option is marked.
  135.  
  136.                 Click the window's close box when all the settings are as 
  137.                 required.
  138.  
  139.   Sizes...      This opens the sizes window,  which allows the dimensions 
  140.                 of  the  label stock in use to be defined.   To  alter  a 
  141.                 dimension,   click  on  the  figure  to  select  it   for 
  142.                 adjustment,  then use the increment or decrement  buttons 
  143.                 to  change it.   The dimension settings available are  as 
  144.                 follows (see the accompanying Draw diagram for a  clearer 
  145.                 explanation):

  147.                   Label width           The printable width of a label.
  148.  
  149.                   Horiz pitch           The  horizontal distance  between 
  150.                                         adjacent  labels (not  applicable 
  151.                                         if  the stock is only  one  label 
  152.                                         wide).

  154.                   Print indent          The  distance  between  the  left 
  155.                                         edge of the label,  and the  left 
  156.                                         hand column of text.
  157.  
  158.                   First offset          The distance of the left edge  of 
  159.                                         the   first   label   from    the 
  160.                                         printer's "home" position.
  161.  
  162.                   Label height          The printable height of a label.
  163.  
  164.                   Vert pitch            The  vertical  distance   between 
  165.                                         adjacent labels.
  166.  
  167.                 Width,  height and the two pitches can be measured on the 
  168.                 label stock and set directly.   Print indent is a  matter 
  169.                 of  personal  preference.   First offset is best  set  by 
  170.                 experiment,  when  the labels have been loaded  into  the 
  171.                 printer (use "Line up" to print a test pattern).

  173.                 Click the window's close box when all the settings are as 
  174.                 required.

  176.   Reset         This leads to a sub-menu with two options:
  177.  
  178.                   Defaults      Resets  all the setting and size  options 
  179.                                 to those built into the program.
  180.  
  181.                   Clear text    Clears  all the lines in the  text  entry 
  182.                                 window to blank.
  183.  
  184.   Mode          This  allows  the  program's  mode  of  operation  to  be 
  185.                 selected:
  186.  
  187.                   Type text     Label  text  can  be  entered  into   the 
  188.                                 editing window from the keyboard.
  189.  
  190.                   From file     Labels  are  prepared and  printed  using 
  191.                                 data contained in a text file.
  192.  
  193.                 The selected option is ticked.
  194.  
  195.   Print         Leads to a sub-menu which controls printing.  The options 
  196.                 are:
  197.  
  198.                   One set       Prints one set of labels.
  199.  
  200.                   Multiple      Prints  the labels multiple  times;   the 
  201.                                 number is entered in the box leading from 
  202.                                 this option.
  203.  
  204.                   Line up       Prints a test pattern,  of the same  size 
  205.                                 and  format  as would be printed  by  the 
  206.                                 current settings but with X's in place of 
  207.                                 the text.
  208.  
  209.                   Form feed     Performs  a  form feed  on  the  printer, 
  210.                                 advancing the paper by the height of  one 
  211.                                 label.
  212.  
  213.                   Output        Controls  how the output is sent  to  the 
  214.                                 printer:
  215.  
  216.                                   Spooled       Output  is  done  in  the 
  217.                                                 background,    via    the 
  218.                                                 printer   driver.    This 
  219.                                                 means that other  desktop 
  220.                                                 tasks can continue  while 
  221.                                                 printing is in progress.
  222.  
  223.                                   Direct        Output  is sent  directly 
  224.                                                 to  the   printer;    all 
  225.                                                 other     activity     is 
  226.                                                 suspended   while    this 
  227.                                                 takes place.
  228.  
  229.                                 The  selected  option  is  ticked.   Note 
  230.                                 that,  if no printer driver is installed, 
  231.                                 attempting to print in Spooled mode  will 
  232.                                 give an error.
  233.  
  234.                                 When Label starts up,  the output  option 
  235.                                 is set to Spooled or Direct according  to 
  236.                                 whether a printer driver is installed  or 
  237.                                 not.
  238.  
  239.                                 See "Printing" for more information.

  241.   Save          Leads  to a further sub-menu,  some options of  which  in 
  242.                 turn  lead  to "Save as" windows which are  used  in  the 
  243.                 normal RiscOS way:
  244.  
  245.                   Text          Only available if in direct mode.   Saves 
  246.                                 the  current  label text as a  text  file 
  247.                                 (type    &FFF).      Has    the     label 
  248.                                 separator/terminator '%%%%%' added to the 
  249.                                 end,  so  the format is equivalent  to  a 
  250.                                 mail-merge file containing one label.

  252.                   Settings      Saves the current settings and sizes to a 
  253.                                 parameter  file (type &001).   Note  that 
  254.                                 the format of this file is not compatible 
  255.                                 with Label version 1.
  256.  
  257.                   Defaults      Saves  the current settings and sizes  as 
  258.                                 the  permanent  default  -  a  chance  to 
  259.                                 confirm   or  abort  is   given.    These 
  260.                                 settings  will then apply when  Label  is 
  261.                                 next  started up,  or when "Defaults"  is 
  262.                                 chosen from the "Reset" menu.

  264.   Quit          Quits the application and removes it from memory.

  268. Entering text (direct mode)
  269. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

  271. Choose "Type text" from the "Mode" menu if required.   Then click  SELECT 
  272. on  the icon bar icon to open the text window.   Only as many  lines  and 
  273. characters as will fit on the currently set up label will be displayed.

  275. Click SELECT in the window to place the caret,  then use the normal  Wimp 
  276. control keys to edit text.  Other keys which can be used are:
  277.  
  278.   Return        Move to the end of the next line.
  279.  
  280.   Tab           Same as Return.
  281.  
  282.   shift-Tab     Move to the end of the previous line.
  283.  
  284.   Insert        Inserts a blank line before the current line.
  285.  
  286.   shift-Insert  Deletes the current line.
  287.  
  288.   Escape        Clears the current line.
  289.  
  290. To  clear all the text,  choose the "Clear text" option from the  "Reset" 
  291. menu.

  295. Loading a text file (mail-merge mode)
  296. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

  298. Choose  "From file" from the "Mode" menu if required,  then drag  a  text 
  299. file to the icon bar icon.   The Files window will pop up to confirm  the 
  300. load.
  301.  
  302. The format of the file is one line for each line of the label.  The label 
  303. separator is '%%%%%' on a line by itself;   text is collected until  this 
  304. is seen and then one label is printed.  Excess lines are ignored;  if too 
  305. few text lines are given then the extra ones on the label are left blank.
  306.  
  307. As many label data sets as required may appear in the file, with each one 
  308. separated as above.   Label generation continues until the end of file is 
  309. reached.
  310.  
  311. Note  that if saving a text file from another application (as opposed  to 
  312. loading  it  from a file),  the data will be copied to a  temporary  file 
  313. (pointed  to  by  the  system  variable  Label$Scrap).   When  the  Label 
  314. application is exited,  this file will be removed;   normally the use  of 
  315. this file should be transparent to the user.

  319. Saving text (direct mode)

  322. Use  the  Save,Text  menu  option to save  a  text  file  containing  the 
  323. currently entered text.

  327. Saving settings
  328. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

  330. Use the Save,Settings menu option to save a settings file containing  the 
  331. current settings and label sizes.
  332.  
  333. Use  the  Save,Defaults  option  to save  the  current  settings  as  the 
  334. permanent default.   These will be used when the program is next  started 
  335. up, or if Defaults is chosen from the Reset menu.

  339. Printing
  340. ­­­­­­­­

  342. Choose the appropriate option from the Print menu.
  343.  
  344. If  the  Output option is set to Spooled,  the printout is written  to  a 
  345. temporary file (pointed to by the system variable Printer$Scrap) and then 
  346. printed  in  the background.   This means that other  desktop  tasks  can 
  347. continue as soon as the file has been written.   A RiscOS printer  driver 
  348. must be installed to use this method.

  350. If  the  output  option is set to Direct,  the  printer  will  be  driven 
  351. directly;   the printer driver can still be installed and any setting  of 
  352. the  destination  it  makes will be  honoured.   The  hourglass  will  be 
  353. displayed while output is in progress.  Press Escape to abort printing.
