  5. This is the first read only version of ArcFS 2. A read / write version is
  6. due to be released in October 1992, and should make an appearance at the BBC
  7. Acorn User show. See Acorn Computing press for further details when they are
  8. announced.

  10. Full information on ArcFS is available as part of the 'ArcFSExtra' package.
  11. A utility to convert Spark format archives to new format archives, the
  12. !ArcFSInfo application for displaying full infomation on ArcFS objects and
  13. archives (including both full and compressed sizes) and a utility for
  14. ensuring the presence of ArcFS 2 (like RMEnsure, but will ensure that ArcFS
  15. 2, read only or read / write, and not ArcFS 1 is present.) are also included.

  17. This version of ArcFS is not P.D., but may be distributed subject to the
  18. conditions in the 'Licence' file.

  20. Many thanks to David Pilling, author of Spark and SparkPlug, for selling the
  21. full version of ArcFS 1 and for providing me with the information to enable
  22. me to include support for Squashed (PK arc compatible) and Compress formats.
  23. The full version of ArcFS 2 will probably be sold through another publisher
  24. who can sell it at Acorn shows and give it more publicity. The asking price
  25. will ideally be about £20. All offers are welcome, but will need to be made
  26. fairly quickly as I would like to come to an agreement with a company by the
  27. end of July 1992.

  29. ArcFS has filing system number 56. My thanks to Acorn for the allocation of
  30. this filing system number and for the allocation of the SWI chunk base
  31. (&437C0).

  33. The version of ArcFSFiler supplied with this version of ArcFS (v0.50) should
  34. work with all versions of Oak's SCSI and Ian Copestake Software's IDE Hard
  35. drive software.

  37. Please note that I can no longer offer a registration service. If anyone
  38. finds ArcFS very useful then please buy the full read / write version or
  39. send a donation to one of the addresses below. Future improvements will be
  40. sent to The Micro User / Archimedes World / Syracuse for distribution.
  41. Please also note that I will no longer be sending out improvements
  42. automatically to P.D. libraries. Again, upgrades will be available through
  43. the above magazines.

  45. ArcFS allows the loading and opening of (compressed) files in archives  as
  46. easily as files on ADFS or RamFS. It has its own ArcFS filer  which displays
  47. the root directory in a filer window of any archive  which is double
  48. clicked. From then on files and applications may be  loaded as normal by
  49. double clicking them. Directories may be displayed  also by double clicking
  50. them. ArcFS can, of cause, also be used from  the command line. Facilities
  51. for loading encrypted files are included, via a preferences window which can
  52. be obtained by clicking on the ArcFS icon. An option to display the
  53. hourglass whilst ArcFS is working is also provided
  54.  
  55. ArcFS 2 will load files in half the time (on average) that ArcFS 1 took.
  56. The following is a guide to performance with an ARM 2:
  57.  
  58.     Loading from floppies takes about 20% longer if the files are archived
  59.     (files compressed to below 20% can take less time to load from an
  60.     archive).
  61.  
  62.     Loading from a hard disk takes about 10 times as long if files are
  63.     archived (remember that hard disk loading times are usually of the
  64.     order of a few tenths of a second - ArcFS 2 will take a few seconds
  65.     to load files from a hard disk.)

  67. Performance with an ARM 3:
  68.  
  69.     Loading from floppies should take about the same length of time whether
  70.     or not files are archived.
  71.  
  72.     Loading from a hard disk should take about 5 times as long.

  74. N.B. Since I don't have an ARM 3, the ARM 3 times are based on the little
  75. information I have been given by other people.

  77. ArcFS 2 will read ArcFS archives, Spark archives and most archives produced
  78. on a P.C. by P.K. PAK or SEA arc.
