  5. The current full version is v2.23 - Details of how to get it are in the info
  6. box.

  8. Full information on ArcFS is available as part of the 'ArcFSExtra' package,
  9. along with technical documentation and utilities.
  10.  
  11. This version of ArcFS is not P.D., but may be distributed subject to the
  12. conditions in the 'Licence' file.
  13.  
  14. ArcFS has filing system number 56. My thanks to Acorn for the allocation of
  15. this filing system number and for the allocation of the SWI chunk base
  16. (&437C0) and Filetype (&3FB).

  18. ArcFS allows the loading and opening of (compressed) files in archives  as
  19. easily as files on ADFS or RamFS. It has its own ArcFS filer  which displays
  20. the root directory in a filer window of any archive  which is double
  21. clicked. From then on files and applications may be  loaded as normal by
  22. double clicking them. Directories may be displayed  also by double clicking
  23. them. ArcFS can, of cause, also be used from  the command line. Facilities
  24. for loading encrypted files are included, via a preferences window which can
  25. be obtained by clicking on the ArcFS icon. An option to display the
  26. hourglass whilst ArcFS is working is also provided
  27.  
  28. The performance of ArcFS depends on many variables such as the machine you
  29. are using and the media (hard disc, floppy, network etc.). Loading from
  30. floppies should be as fast or faster than loading the same material,
  31. uncompressed. Loading from hard disc will usually be slightly slower when
  32. using compressed data.

  36. Now *MUCH* Faster. Support for a new archive filetype (&3FB) so ArcFS
  37. archive aren't loaded by SparkFS. Full version also now puts a second copy
  38. of file catalogue information immediately before the file data to make
  39. recovery of files from corrupt archives easier.

  43. Memory mangement has now been separated out into another module. In time,
  44. this will allow for memory other than RMA to be used as workspace.
