  1. ProTracker technical information
  2. --------------------------------
  3. As Arc ProTracker is a very complicated product, this file has been
  4. included to clarify most technical points of the software.
  5. This file contains information on the following topics:
  6.  
  7. 1. Stereo positioning
  8. 2. Amplitude with different numbers of voices active
  9. 3. Using MS-DOS format discs with PT disc op.

  11. Stereo positioning
  12. ------------------
  13. The Archimedes has 2 channel stereo sound with 8 voices. Any channel
  14. can be assigned a stereo 'position' which lies in the field of full left
  15. to full right: there are seven discrete positions in this range.
  16.  
  17. As the DMA buffer size is constant irrespective of the number of channels,
  18. a concept of physical and logical channels arises. There are always 8
  19. physical channels, but depending on the number of logical channles (voices
  20. active in ProTracker), different physical channels are used, as shown below:

  43. As each physical channel has its own stereo position, care has to be taken
  44. in setting the stereo positions when using less than 8 voices. For example
  45. when using 4 voices, the stereo positions of physical channels 5,6,7 and 8
  46. will affect logical channels 1,2,3 and 4 respectively.
  47. Arc ProTracker allows you to reposition logical channels, which repositions
  48. all the corresponding physical channels (giving the desired result).
  49. However care must be taken when repositioning physical channels directly
  50. (ie. channel numbers higher than the number of active voices) as doing so
  51. only alters one physical channel. Consulting the above table shows that
  52. when using less than 8 voices, this will not have the desired effect.
  53. Note: the 'Track setup' dialogue within PT prevents you from repositioning
  54. the physical channels. Only the 'P' effect command used with the first
  55. parameter non-zero will allow you to do this.

  57. Amplitude with different numbers of voices active
  58. -------------------------------------------------
  59. The peak volume level for overall sound output remains constant, and
  60. each physical channel's level is combined to make the total amplitude.
  61. As there are eight physical channels, each physical channel uses 1/8th
  62. of the total amplitude.
  63.   Therefore when using 8 channels, each channel uses 1/8th of the overall
  64. peak level. Similarly when using 4 channels, each channel uses a quarter,
  65. with 2 channels, each uses a half, and with only one channel the entire
  66. amplitude is available for that channel.

  68. Using MS-DOS format discs with PT disc op.
  69. ------------------------------------------
  70. MS-DOS format discs work perfectly well with PT's disc op.
  71. However, make sure each PC disc that you intend to use has a volume name,
  72. as the DosFS filing system gives each disc without one, a name of
  73. 'Untitled'. This is OK if you are only using one disc without a volume name, but if you have used two such discs, disc op. will display the directory for the first 'Untitled' disc, even if you click on the 'Load module' gadget.
  74. If this occurs you can simply click on the floppy disc icon in the desktop.
  75. This will tell ADFS to forget about the previous 'Untitled' disc in favour
  76. of the new one: Disc op. will now display the correct directory.
  77. While you're at it, you may as well give this disc a name now, to prevent it
  78. happening in the future!
  79.   Also when using certain PC discs on certain drives, the 'drive busy'
  80. light may remain on after performing a disc operation. To prevent anything
  81. untoward happening in this situation, simply remove the disc from the drive,
  82. and the light will go out. This also prevents the light remaining on
  83. again, for the duration of that session.
