  1. FastSpool is an application to send data over the parallel
  2. port much faster than by using the parallel: filing system.
  3. The speed you can obtain is largely dependent on the kind of
  4. device you've got there. When it's a printer you'll probably
  5. only notice a difference over using standard methods if it's
  6. a laser printer since other printer types are usually too
  7. slow to keep up with this kind of data flow. I get about 80kB/s
  8. with my HP LJ5 in contrast to the 16kB/s I get using standard
  9. methods. This means *5 times the speed*!

  11. Drawbacks: it's rather hardware-specific in that it can only
  12. work with computers where a 82C710, 82C711 or compatible chip is
  13. driving the parallel interface, for instance the A5000 and the
  14. RiscPC series. It won't work on older machines.

  16. You may get the error that FastSpool can't open parallel:. This
  17. is merely a precaution to prevent other applications from messing
  18. with the parallel port while FastSpool is using it. FastSpool
  19. doesn't use ParallelFS.
