  2. Read_Me4 file for Hewlett-Packard printers.

  5. The HP.LaserJet-4 printer definition file is for use with HP LaserJet 4
  6. series printers, including the HP LaserJet 4L, 4, 4M, 4Si and 4Si/MX. It is
  7. the same as the HP.LasJet-III file with two exceptions. The obvious change
  8. is that there is a 600 DPI graphics entry. This should only be used if the
  9. printer itself supports 600 DPI graphics. The LaserJet 4L for example does
  10. not support 600 DPI, whereas the LaserJet 4, 4M, 4Si and 4Si/MX do. The
  11. other warning about 600 DPI is that it takes a lot longer to print than 300
  12. DPI, since it requires 4 times as much memory to render the page in the
  13. Archimedes (which in fact means it is done in 4 times as many strips). It is
  14. recommended that the Archimedes have 4 megabytes of memory or more if 600
  15. DPI printing is to be used. An ARM3 processor is also desirable.

  17. The other change from the HP.LasJet-III file is that the printer's
  18. LinePrinter font is used for Landscape text printing. This is because the
  19. Courier font size used by LaserJet 4 series printers for Landscape text
  20. printing is too large. Hence the right hand text column comes out too far to
  21. the right with the result that some characters are lost off the edge of the
  22. page. LinePrinter font on the other hand is slightly too narrow, but at
  23. least all of the text fits on the paper. Other LaserJet compatible printers
  24. switch to LinePrinter font automatically in this situation (eg. the HP
  25. LaserJet II) but for some reason the LaserJet 4 series printers don't. This
  26. problem may be found on other LaserJet compatible printers. If so you should
  27. use the LaserJet-4 file and avoid selecting 600 DPI graphics (or use
  28. !PrintEdit to delete it).

  30. The HP.LasJet4-PS printer definition file is for use with HP LaserJet 4
  31. series printers in PostScript mode, including the HP LaserJet 4M, 4Si/MX and
  32. the HP LaserJet 4 and 4Si with PostScript upgrades fitted. The only
  33. difference from the Generic.PostScript file (and all the other HP PostScript
  34. files) is that the printer is specified as being a 600 DPI printer. This
  35. does not however cause the printer to switch to 600 DPI PostScript
  36. automatically (unlike in LaserJet mode) hence 600 DPI should be selected on
  37. the printer's control panel. In practice it's not that important, since the
  38. PostScript printer drivers do not take much notice of the resolution.
  39. PostScript printing at 600 DPI requires a lot of memory in the printer for
  40. holding the image of the page. It is recommended that the printer have at
  41. least 6 megabytes of memory if 600 DPI PostScript is to be used.
