GLASGOW UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
PHYSICS DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS

Glasgow University has the largest Physics Department in Scotland and
one of the largest in UK. We offer a wide selection of courses and
options in all branches of physics and astronomy, ranging from theories
of the origin of the Universe to practical applications of electronics and
lasers. Physics can be combined with many other subjects - not just
Mathematics or Electronic Engineering but even Music or Philosophy.
Computational techniques are an important part of modern physics and the
department has course options in this area. The main language used is 'C'
written on PC's and Acorn computers. Many students choose to do computing
projects in their third year.
These programs were originally written to demonstrate some of the
concepts in the undergraduate lecture courses given in our department. They
were coded in BASIC by Dr Sandy Watt as part of an ongoing computer
assisted learning programme. They proved to be useful both as lecturing
aids and also for students to experiment with themselves and have generally
been well received.
They are being distributed in the hope that they will be equally useful
to other educational establishments. The applications are freeware. They
may be spread freely with all files (including this plug for Glasgow
University) intact. They may not be used or distributed for profit and no
responsibility is taken for any damage to files (of course).

Things have been tidied up a bit and one or two additions made:
!PtCharges - Supersedes the electric fields programs.
!Carnot - Doesn't do very much at present. Displays a Carnot Cycle in action.
!Lattices - Displays unit cells for the different lattice structures of crystals.
WaveSource - A nice basic program which shows point sources of waves (like
in a ripple tank). They can be moved about with the mouse and the wavelength
can be altered by clicking on the white bar above the display. You can
change the number of sources by altering the variable "Sources%" at the
start of the program.
Note that some of the programs work best in mode 12 (some won't work at all
otherwise) but we just haven't got round to sorting them. It's always more
interesting to do something new. If you have any problems or queries or if
