!Help file for Bat Power application
Total size 7 kbytes
This application is to discharge the battery on an A4 portable.
Why?
The A4 uses Nickel Cadmium batteries. which suffer from the so called memory
effect. The consequence of this is if a Nickel Cadmium battery is recharged
when it is only partly discharged it stores less electricity the second time
around. If this is repeated hundreds of times over the life of the machine
then the battery life will reduce markedly to a half or a third of the
original life.
To counteract this effect, this application keeps the system awake and stops
it going into powersave mode, when it will take longer to discharge the
battery. It stops the hard disk from spinning down by saving the date and
time every 15 seconds, this could used to investigate battery life in
unusual conditions.
An Ideal mode of operation would be to use the computer from fully charged
continuously or discontinuously until the low power waning appears, then to
save your work and run this application until the battery is totally flat
(you can pack up yourcomputer in it's bag while this happens, But if you do
the screen will blank and it will take longer to discharge.) and then to
charge the battery continuously until it is recharged.
I have found through doing this that I can gain an extra 15-20 minutes of
battery life (out of 2 hours) on a computer that is 5 months old.
The !Boot file within the directory 'Boot' is to enable this application to
be started without waiting for the system to finish booting. This might be
used if you finish one battery, and then change to another one to finish your
work without having time to fully discharge the first. After finishing your
work without finishing the second battery you might wish start discharging
the first battery while you travel home or to your next appointment, But you
do not wish to wait for the computer to finish rebooting after you change
batteries. The solution is to ensure that you desktop boot file includes the
command 'Filer_Boot ADFS::IDEDisc4.$.!Bat Power' substituting the correct
path name for this application. Then copy the boot file into the main
application directory. Then switch off and change batteries, switch on the
computer and then pack it away. When the boot completes this application will
start itself and you will be well on your way to your next appointment
without wasting any time.
This is a very simple application but it may save you the few hours that I
spent writing it.
