FreeDial 0.22
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FreeDial dials your Internet provider, logs in and sets up the Internet
software on the RISC OS side. All important setups are grouped in one simple
dialogue box, and you can simply select or edit one of the available choices
from pop-up menus. FreeDial can be used with any Internet software but is
currently only supplied with a FreeNet and an Acorn DCI4 configuration.
Installation procedure:
- Copy !FreeDial in a directory where it can find !FreeNet and !FreeUser or
!Internet.
- Run either FNInstall or AInstall
- Start !FreeDial and use the menus for its configuration
If Internet is new to you, read the 'Install' file for a very detailed
description of internet software installation.
To install FreeDials configuration for use with either of the supported
stacks, locate the !FreeUser or !Internet application and run the FNInstall
or AInstall file. Note that the only difference is the directory in which the
FreeDial configuration files are stored. Since !Internet and !FreeNet both
define the same variables, you should not have both booted. Read the end of
this file if you are upgrading from a previous version of FreeDial.
The Install files expect the default FreeUser or Internet applications as
found in the FreeNet or AcornDCI4 distribution. You don't need to edit any
of the files in these as FreeDial will handle the configuration. The Install
file will NOT overwrite any of the standard files in !FreeUser or !Internet.
FreeDial needs the SerialBuffer module and SerialDeviceDriver 0.22 to work
with the internal serial port. If you don't have them, get them from
ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk or where you got the FreeNet software. High speed
serial links need these utilities to work reliably.
Now you can just start FreeDial and configure it. Use the Help application
and read the !Help file for more information.
Upgrade from a version before 0.22
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There were some problems with the dial code which should be fixed now.
FreeDial 0.22 introduces a country hierarchy for provider configurations.
This means that the directory structure is changed. The FNInstall or
AInstall file will upgrade your previous configurations to this new structure
as well as installing the new configurations. Your previous configurations
are placed in the 'v021' country and can be moved from there by editing the
country name in the FreeDial Provider setup.
FreeNet 0.22 supports stack selection from the frontend, and the stack should
no longer be started from the script file. FreeDial starts the selected stack
before dialling and defines 'InetStack$Path' to point to a directory with
driver start scripts for the selected stack. Your previous scripts should
still work but it is better to change them, typically:
Task <FreeUser$Dir>.StartSLIP
becomes:
Task InetStack:SLIP
You can then remove the StartSLIP and StartPPP files from the !FreeUser
driectory if you wish. Now the script will work with either FreeNet or Acorn
Internet.
