  25. How To Use The ArtWorks Viewer
  26. ==============================
  27.  
  28. Double-click on the !AWViewer icon in a directory viewer to run the program.
  29.  
  30. An icon will appear on the icon bar and a default picture will be displayed.
  31. Click on the Close icon on the window to remove it.
  32.  
  33. To view any ArtWorks file, drag it from a directory viewer onto the icon on
  34. the icon bar. A window will appear displaying as much of the ArtWorks file
  35. as will fit in the window.

  37. Zooming into the picture
  38. ========================
  39.  
  40. Clicking with the left hand button will zoom into the picture (i.e. increase
  41. its size). Clicking with the right hand button will zoom out of the picture.
  42.  
  43. Clicking and dragging with the left hand button will create a box. Releasing
  44. the mouse button will cause the viewer to zoom into the box.
  45.  
  46. Clicking with the left hand button while holding down the CTRL key will zoom
  47. the picture to 100%
  48.  
  49. Clicking with the right hand button will zoom out of the picture.
  50.  
  51. Clicking with the left hand button while holding down SHIFT will return to
  52. the previous scale factor (i.e. the one before the last zoom).
  53.  
  54. Moving the picture around
  55. =========================
  56.  
  57. Holding down either Alt key will change the pointer to a hand. Clicking and
  58. holding down the mouse will move the picture around in the window (if the
  59. window is only displaying part of the image).

  61. The Menu
  62. ========
  63.  
  64. Clicking the middle button over the icon or the window will bring up the
  65. menu.
  66.  
  67. Info shows info about the program.
  68.  
  69. Quit quits the program.
  70.  
  71. WYSIWYG sets the quality of the display:
  72.  
  73. * 'Outlines' displays only black outlines of objects.
  74. * 'Simple' displays only flat fills, not graduated fills, and all lines are thin
  75. * 'Normal' displays graduated fills and thick lines, but does not anti-alias
  76. * 'Anti-aliased' will display all objects 'anti-aliased', which reduces the
  77.   jagged edges of shapes by using grey shades or shades of colour to smooth the
  78.   edges, in a similar way to the way fonts are anti-aliased.  Anti-aliased
  79.   drawing is slower than the normal setting.

  81. ArtWorks rendering can take advantage of different screen palettes.  Inside
  82. the !AWViewer program are two alternative 16 colour screen mode palettes. 
  83. To load these palettes hold down SHIFT and double click on the !AWViewer to
  84. open the program directory. There should be two files shown here called Grey
  85. and Primary. To load either just drag the file onto the Palette icon on the
  86. left side of the icon bar.

  88. The grey palette sets the screen to be 16 shades of grey.  ArtWorks then
  89. dithers these to show perfectly smooth graduated grey-scales.  The Primary
  90. palette slightly alters some of the desktop colours to allow ArtWorks to
  91. shows a better range of colours.  To set the screen palette back to the
  92. default simply select the Default menu option from the Palette icon on the
  93. icon bar.

  95. Current Acorn hardware does not allow palettes to be changed in 256 colour
  96. modes.

  98. Incorporating the ArtWorks renderer in your own programs
  99. ========================================================

  116. Technical notes
  117. ---------------
  118. This version of the viewer displays files from ArtWorks version 1.10 and
  119. earlier.  It does not incorporate the sprite dithering technology of
  120. ArtWorks version 1.10 and all sprites are shown non-dithered as they would
  121. appear in other Acorn  applications.
  122.  
  123. When creating ArtWorks files to be viewed by this viewer program remember
  124. that the machine being used may not have the same fonts. The viewer program
  125. will not display a font if it cannot find the exact match, however there
  126. are two ways you can ensure that text does get displayed no matter what
  127. fonts are available.
  128.  
  129. Firstly, performing a 'Makes shapes' operation on any text turns it into
  130. graphic outlines - but it no longer remains editable.  Secondly, by giving
  131. the text an outline colour, or in fact performing any operation that forces
  132. ArtWorks to use text outlines, such as distorting it in an envelope or
  133. giving it a graduated colour fill, will also make ArtWorks store and display
  134. the text using the outlines.  This second method has the advantage that text
  135. will remain as text so that it could be edited in ArtWorks at a later date
  136. if so desired.

  138. Both options involve making ArtWorks draw the text using the font outline
  139. shapes and so you should be aware that text displayed this way will be
  140. slower. It will also greatly increase the size of the ArtWorks files.

  143. Impression
  144. ----------
  145. Impression Junior version 1.18 and Impression II version 2.18 and later can 
  146. accept, display and print ArtWorks files directly.  If you have earlier
  147. versions of either program then you can upgrade for £10 + VAT by returning
  148. your disc 1, with payment, to Computer Concepts.
  149.  
  150. If you already own a copy of ArtWorks then there is no charge for the
  151. upgrade.  In this case just return your Impression disc 1 quoting your
  152. ArtWorks serial number and we will return a replacement disc.
