'Arcmark' is a computerised teacher's markbook that will allow the entry,
manipulation and printing of sets of student's marks. It has a layered
design where each layer represents a different class. It can accommodate up
to 10 classes, each class containing up to 40 students and 78 sets of marks.
The demonstration copy has been limited to 3 classes, 40 students and 30
exams with the 'Save' and 'Print' options disabled.
There is a Demo file that can be loaded using the 'File - Load' option on
the menu.

Introduction
'Arcmark' was designed by a Computer Studies teacher and extensively tested
in a secondary school environment.
It has a similar design to a physical markbook with exam marks being entered
for a single class or a group of classes. Each markbook file can accommodate
up to 10 classes, each class containing up to 40 students and 78 sets of
marks.
After entry of the markbook data, the program allows a large range of
options to analyse and print the marks.
The full program needs 900K of free memory to operate. The markbook files
are stored in a directory called 'Files' within the application and the
number of markbook files that can be stored is only limited by the maximum
number of files that a directory can hold.
From experience with different educational institutions, most teachers store
the application on their own disk for their own classes. Each faculty in the
institution will have a set of disks, one for each year group to store the
markbook data for classes in that group. Teachers may then transfer their
final marks to the faculty disks or may enter their data directly onto the
faculty disks.
This is preferable to having all classes for a faculty on a single disk due
to security problems caused by lost disks.
An alternative is for each faculty to have their own directory containing
'Arcmark' and markbook files for their relevant year groups and classes on a
harddisk. These directories can then be archived at regular intervals onto a
floppy disk.
Getting Started:
1. Turn on the computer, monitor and printer.
2.Place your program disk in the disk drive. Disk is to be placed in the
drive with the label up and metal cover first.
3.Move the mouse so that the mouse pointer is over the disk drive symbol
(icon) on the bottom left hand side of the screen (monitor).
Click the left button of the mouse. This will display the contents
(directory) of your disk.
4.Place the mouse pointer over the !Arcmark icon and double click the left
button on the mouse. This will run the program. You will now be presented
will a blank markbook page with the cursor in a red highlighted area next to
the class name.
The displayed markbook contains one class, and 20 exams.
The blank markbook screen is divided into 4 sections.
Each section is used to enter different types of data as follows:

|______________|__________________________________________________|
Section 1:Exam Information.
Contains all the information about the exam marks to be entered. ie. Name,
Total Mark and Weighting. It also displays the Mean and Standard Deviation
for the particular exam.
Section 2:Class Name.
Contains the Class Name and displays the number of
students in the class.
Section 3:Student Names.
Contains the Student Names for the class.
Section 4:Student Marks.
Contains the Student's marks for a particular exam, combined exams, rank,
grade etc.
To move from one section to another place the mouse pointer over the
position required and press 'select'. This will move the cursor to the
position of the mouse pointer. It is not possible to place or move the
cursor below the last student name in section 4.
It is also possible to move between sections 1,2 and 4 by using the up and
down cursor keys or the page up and page down keys.
The arrow heads at the side and bottom of the markbook allow the user to
move quickly around the markbook.
The left and right arrows at the top and bottom allow the displayed exams
and associated student marks to be scrolled to the left and right. The
single arrow moving the displayed exams by one exam and the double arrows
moving the displayed exams by seven exams or a single page. Pressing the
'select' button while the mouse pointer is over the arrow will move the
displayed exams to the right, pressing 'adjust' will move the exams to the
left.
Pressing the 'left' or 'right' cursor keys will move the display one exam to
the left or right. Pressing the 'Shift' key and a 'left' or 'right' cursor
key will move the display a page to the left or right.
The up and down arrows at the right side of the 'Marks' section, move the
displayed marks up and down. They function in a similar manner to the left
and right arrows with the single arrow moving the displayed marks up and
down by a single row. The double arrows allow the user to move up and down
by a single page of marks. As the marks are scrolled the corresponding
student names are also scrolled.
Pressing the 'up' or 'down' cursor keys will move the cursor up and down a
single row. When the cursor reaches the bottom of the display the screen
will scroll up a row. Pressing the 'Shift' key and a 'up' or 'down' cursor
key will move the display marks up or down a page.
The arrows next to the 'Class Name' allow the user to move from one class to
the next. Pressing the 'select' button when the mouse pointer is over the
'down' arrow will move the display forward to another class and pressing
'adjust' over the same arrow will move back to the previous class.
The opposite effect occurs if the 'up' arrow is selected. The 'Ctrl' and
'cursor up' or 'cursor down' keys can also be used to move quickly to from
one class to another.
Initially it will be not possible to move to another class as the markbook
only contains one class. The markbook options can also be selected from a
menu that is displayed when the middle or menu button is pressed. An option
can be highlighted by placing the mouse pointer over the option.
Moving the mouse pointer over the right arrows will display further options.
An option is selected by clicking the 'select' button with the mouse pointer
on the option required. The menu can be cleared by clicking 'select' outside
of the menu display.
TheMarkbook options can be also accessed by pressing a range of key
combinations. These combinations are also displayed next to to the option in
the menu, eg. Ctrl - S for scaling a single exam.
Entering Markbook Data
Pressing the select button on the mouse can now be used to enter data in
addition to the 'Return' key. The cursor will then move to the present
position of the mouse pointer.
Class Name.
Place the cursor in the area next to the class name. The class name can now
be entered by typing in the name and pressing 'Return' or 'Enter' . The
enetered class name can be up to 22 characters in length. The 'Delete' key
can be used to edit the name before 'Return' is pressed.
The class name can be re-entered at any time by clicking 'select' over the
class name to position the cursor. The new name can then be entered. After
entering the class name the cursor will move to the first position in the
student name section for entering of student names.
Student Names.
The student names are entered in similar manner to the class name. If the
student name is longer than the display area the the name will scroll to the
left and on pressing 'Return' the left 16 characters of the name will be
displayed. The name can be edited by using the delete key before 'Return' is
pressed.
After the name has been entered the cursor will move down to the next
position and the display showing the number of students in the class is
updated. The cursor keys can also be used to move up and down the student
names to re-enter any student whose name is incorrect.
Pressing 'Delete' over a student name will erase the name from the display.
If a new name is not entered on pressing 'Return' or moving the cursor, then
the previous name will be displayed.
After all students have been entered it is possible to sort the students in
alphabetical order by selecting 'Student - Sort' from the menu. Click
'select' with the mouse pointer over 'SORT' to sort students. Clicking
'select' over 'CANCEL' will cancel the option and return the cursor to the
class name position. An alternative method of displaying the Sort Option
screen is to use the keyboard shortcut, 'Alt - S'.
Exam Information
Place the cursor in a column at the top of the markbook next to exam name.
Two lines have been allocated for exam names, with each exam name containing
up to a maximum of 13 characters, 7 on the first row and 6 on the second
row.
The markbook will accept four different types of exams and these are
identified by the presence or absence of an '*' as a prefix or an '@' as a
suffix to the name.
The four different exam combinations are as follows:
a) Class numerical exams eg. Test 1
b) Class letter exams eg. Test 1@
c) Year numerical exams eg. *Test 1
d) Year letter exams eg. *Test1@
Class exams have no prefix and the exam data for such a exam will be only
relevant to that particular class.
Year exams are identified with an '*' prefix and the data entered for these
exams will be relevant across all classes in the markbook. When a Year exam
name is entered in the first row of the exam column, then this name will be
entered into the corresponding position for all classes in the markbook. If
the first row contains a Year exam name then any name entered into the
second row will be automatically entered for all classes in the markbook.
Letter exams are identified by the '@' suffix. To enter a letter exam name
an '@' has to be placed at the extreme right of the exam name and only in
the first row. The space bar can be used to move to this position if it is a
short exam name. The software has been configured such that only an '@' can
be entered in this position.
The Total mark and Weighting (if required) can now be entered for the
particular exam. The Total mark and Weighting cannot be entered for a
'letter' exam. Also no mean and standard deviation will be displayed for a
letter exam
The cursor keys can also be used to enter data in addition to the 'Return'
key. The difference is that the cursor will move to the next position on the
markbook page in the same direction as the cursor key.
If student marks have been already entered for an exam then a new total mark
can be re-entered only if the new total is greater than or equal to the
highest student mark. An error message is displayed if the new total is
lower and the old total mark is retained by the markbook software.
It is not possible to enter data into the 'mean' and 'standard deviation' as
these values are calculated by the markbook software.
Student Marks
Marks for students can be entered within the following ranges. The numerical
exams can accept a number value from 0 to 9999 in increments of 0.1 . The
letter exams will only accept values in the range of A+ to E-.
For numerical exams the student mark entered must be less than or equal to
the Total mark. Negative marks cannot be entered. If a student mark is
greater than the Total mark, then a small 'beep' is heard to remind the user
of their mistake and the mark can be re-entered.
If a student is absent for an exam, then pressing 'Return' or 'cursor down'
key will move the cursor to the next position.
Marks can be easily deleted from any position on the page by pressing the
'delete' key. After all marks have been entered for a particular exam or
exams, the updated Mean and Standard Deviation can be displayed by moving
the mouse pointer to the top section of the markbook and clicking 'select'
to position the cursor in any column or by displaying the menu.
Exam / Student Selection
A large number of the menu options require the user to select an exam column
or a student. To select an exam place the mouse pointer over the required
exam column at the top of the markbook. Double click the 'select' mouse
button and the exam information at the pointer position will begin to flash.
This will indicate that the exam column has been selected. To cancel the
selected exam double click 'select' again over the exam column.
In some options it is possible to select more than one exam and in others it
may not be possible to select 'letter' exams. Selected exams will still be
selected even though they may not be presently displayed on the screen.
The left and right arrows can be used to move back and forwards across the
markbook to find the required exam columns.
Selecting a student follows a similar procedure with the mouse pointer being
placed over the student name and double clicking the 'select' mouse button.
The student selected will begin to flash to indicate that it has been
selected. To cancel the selected student double click 'select' again over
the student name.
The up and down arrows at the side of the markbook can be used to display
the other students in the class.
Markbook Files
Save File (Ctrl - F3)
Markbook files can be saved in two formats.
a)Markbook Data
b)Comma Separated Value (CSV)
Markbook Data Format
This format will save all the data in the markbook. Select 'File - Save -
Markbook' from the menu or by pressing 'Ctrl - F3'. If the markbook file has
been loaded into the markbook then the filename will be displayed otherwise
a filename will need to be entered. If the filename is displayed then
pressing 'Return' will allow the user the option of overwriting the old file
data and replacing it with the updated file data.
A quicker method of saving a file is to click 'select' over 'File - Save'
and click on 'SAVE' on the screen display.
Comma Separated Value (CSV) Format
This format will allow the saving of selected exams from the presently
displayed class as a file which can then be loaded into other applications
eg, spreadsheet or graphing software. The data saved will include the
student names, exam information and student marks for the selected exams.
The file is saved into the 'CSV' directory within the !Arcmark application
and can be accessed by displaying the contents of the 'CSV' directory.
Select 'File - Save - CSV format' from the menu. Select exams to be saved
and click 'select' over 'SAVE'. Enter a filename and press 'Return'.
Load File
Select 'File - Load' from the menu.
The markbook files that have been saved will be displayed. Click 'select'
with the mouse pointer over the file name to be loaded. The file name will
change colour to indicate that it has been selected. Clicking 'select' over
any other file name will change the selected file. Click 'select' over
'LOAD' to load the markbook file.
If the displayed markbook contains data then this can be saved by following
the messages on the screen otherwise the new file will be loaded and the
displayed markbook cleared. Clicking 'select' over 'CANCEL' will return the
user to the markbook. After the markbook file is loaded the first class in
the markbook will be displayed.
Delete File
Select 'File - Delete' from the menu.
The markbook files that have been saved will now be displayed. Select the
relevant file to be deleted and click ’select' over 'DELETE'. Clicking
'select' over any other file name will change the selected file. A warning
message will be displayed to check that this is the correct file to be
deleted. Click 'select' over 'YES' to delete the file or clicking 'select'
over 'NO' will return the user to the markbook.
New File
Select 'File - New' from the menu.
This will clear the presently loaded markbook or a markbook that has been
recently created of all data. A prompt will be displayed to allow the saving
of any data if required.
Editing Markbook
Adding Classes
Select 'Class Group - Add' from the menu.
The markbook can accommodate up to 10 classes. The maximum number of classes
that can be added will be displayed and number required can now be entered.
Year exam names, if already present in the markbook will automatically will
placed in the relevant columns for the new classes.
Deleting Classes. (Ctrl - Z)
Select 'Class Group - Delete' from the menu.
The presently displayed class will be deleted if the 'Select' button is
clicked when the mouse pointer is over 'YES' on the warning screen. Clicking
'select' over the 'NO' will return the user to the markbook.
NB. Use this option with care as all data for the class will be deleted from
the displayed markbook and if the markbook is saved with the same filename
then it is not possible to recover the data.
On deletion of the class the Mean and Standard Deviation for any Year exams
for the other classes will be recalculated.
Class Group - Import Data
Within the application directory is an 'Import' directory.
Student list 'text' files that have been created using 'Edit' or transferred
from other applications and converted to 'text' files can be placed in this
directory.
On choosing the option from the menu, a list of student text files will be
displayed. Selecting a file will:
i) Load the student list automatically if there are no students in the
presently displayed class.
Or a choice of:
i) Replacing the students and their data in the presently displayed class
with the student list.
ii) Appending the student list to the currently displayed students and sort
the students. An error message will be displayed if the class will contain
more than 40 students.
Adding Columns.
Select 'Columns - Add' from the menu.
The markbook can contain up to 78 columns. They are labelled form A-Z,
AA-ZZ, AAA-ZZZ. The markbook has initially only 20 columns. The maximum
number of columns that can be added will be displayed. Enter the number
required and press 'Return'. Each class in the markbook will have the
entered number of columns added after the last column.
Inserting Columns.
Select 'Columns - Insert' from the menu.
This option allows the insertion of columns anywhere in the markbook. Double
click 'select' with the mouse pointer over the exam column at the top of the
markbook to choose the position that the columns will be inserted. Then
click the 'select' button with mouse pointer over 'INSERT'.
The number of columns that can be inserted will be displayed. Enter the
number of columns required and press 'Return'. The columns will be inserted
across all the classes in the markbook before the selected exam column.
Deleting Columns.
Select 'Columns - Delete' from the menu.
Only one column can be deleted at any time. Select the column to be deleted
and click 'select' on 'DELETE'. A warning message will be displayed if
student marks are present in the column. Then click 'select' on 'YES' to
confirm that the correct column has been selected to delete or 'NO' to
return to the markbook. The selected column will be deleted from every class
in the markbook.
Exams
Copy Exam (Ctrl - C)
Select 'Exam - Copy' from the menu.
This will allow a Class or a Year exam to be copied to another column. This
is particularly useful as the the raw exam marks can be preserved and all
calculations done on the copy. Select the exam to be copied and place the
cursor in another column. If the destination column contains an exam then a
message will be displayed asking whether the user wants to overwrite the
exam data.
It is not possible to copy a Class exam over an exam column that contains a
Year exam or vice versa.
Move Exam (Ctrl - V)
Select 'Exam - Move' from the menu.
This option allows the re-positioning of Class or a Year exam across the
markbook. This is useful if exams need to be moved to improve the markbook
layout or the positioning of a class exam into a particular column so they
can be renamed as Year exam for scaling / ranking / grading purposes.
Select the exam to be moved and place the cursor in another column. If the
destination column contains an exam then a message will be displayed asking
whether the user wants to overwrite the exam data. Class exams can only
overwrite other class exams and Year exams can only overwrite other Year
exams.
It is not possible to move a class exam to a year exam column or vice versa.
Delete Exam/s (Ctrl - X)
Select 'Exam - Delete' from the menu.
This option will allow the multiple deletion of Class or Year exams or
combination of both types. After selecting the exam/s click 'select on
'DELETE'. A message is displayed to check that the selected exams are the
correct exams to be deleted.
Only the exam data is deleted and not the column. To delete an exam plus the
column it is in , use the 'Columns - Delete' menu option.
Renaming Exams
It is possible to change the type of exam in a column by simply changing the
exam name.
To convert a numerical exam to a letter exam, the new exam name should have
a @ placed at the end of the name, eg. Test1 to Test1 @. On pressing
'Return' a message will be displayed confirming that this is the correct
exam is to be converted. Clicking 'select' over "YES' will convert the
student marks to the new format.
To convert a letter exam to a numerical exam omit the @ at the end of the
name when entering the new exam name. The exam is then scaled to a new total
mark of 100.
Class exams can be renamed as Year exams by entering the new exam name with
an '*' at the beginning of the name, eg. Test1 to *Test1.
When renaming a Class exam to a Year exam it is important that all classes
have the same total mark for that exam, otherwise an error message will be
displayed.
Year exams can be renamed as Class exams by entering the new exam name
without an '*' at the beginning of the name, eg. *Test1 to Test1. Each class
will then have the same exam name as that entered in the currently displayed
class.
Students
Sort Students (Alt - S)
Select 'Student - Sort' from the menu.
This option will sort students for a particular class in alphabetical order.
It is most often used after entering a new student or if a class has been
sorted on a particular exam.
Move Students (Alt - M)
Select 'Student - Move' from the menu.
On selecting this option a student or a number of students can be moved from
one class to another with only the Year marks for that student/s being
moved, Class marks will be deleted. Select the student/s to be moved. The
number of students selected will be displayed on the screen. After all
students have been selected click 'select' on 'MOVE'.
Click 'select' on the arrows next to the Class Name to select the
destination class. Click 'select' on 'MOVE' to move the students.
An error message will be displayed if the final number of students in the
destination class is greater than 40.
The mean and standard deviation for those exams that are affected will be
automatically updated.
Delete Student (Alt - X)
Select 'Student - Delete' from the menu.
This option will allow the deletion of a student from a class. After
selecting the student, a prompt is displayed to check that this is the
correct student to be deleted. On deletion of the student, the mean and
standard deviation for those exams that are affected will be automatically
updated.
Estimate Student Mark (Ctrl - I)
Select 'Student - Estimate' from the menu.
This option can only be selected from the menu if the cursor has been placed
in an empty numerical mark position for a student. Select the exams to be
used to create the estimate. Only those exams that contain a numerical mark
for that student can be selected.
Click 'select' over 'ESTIMATE' to calculate the estimate for the student.
the resultant mark from the calculation will be displayed in brackets with
the mean and standard deviation being updated for that exam.
An estimate for a student can be entered directly into the markbook by
placing brackets around the mark when it first entered. Any calculated exam
marks using an esitmated mark will also be displayed with brackets.
Markbook Data Analysis
Scale Exam Mean / Std Deviation
Single Exam (Ctrl - S)
Select 'Exam - Scale Mean - Single exam' from the menu.
Often exams need to have a common mean / std dev. before they can be further
analysed. Only numerical exams can be scaled. It will not be possible to
select a letter exam. The exam can be scaled in its present column or can be
scaled and placed in another exam column.
After selecting the exam to be scaled, leave the cursor on the selected exam
or move it to another column for placement of the scaled exam data, (if it
is a Year exam then the column containing the cursor must be empty for all
classes in the markbook or contain a Year exam).
After clicking 'select' on 'SCALE', the program will request the following
inputs; a)New mean. b)New standard deviation. c)New total mark.
If any of the numbers entered is zero or if the total mark is less than the
mean, then the numbers will be requested again.
After pressing 'Return' to enter the new Total mark, the maximum and minimum
scaled mark for the selected exam will now be displayed. If the scaled marks
are less than zero or greater than the new Total mark then a 'beep' is
heard.
The user now has the option of:
Clicking on 'SCALE'' to accept the scaled marks whereby the scaled marks
less than zero will be given the value of zero, and marks higher than the
Total mark will be truncated to the new Total mark.
Clicking 'select' on 'RE-ENTER' to enter a new mean / std dev / total mark
combination.
Clicking 'select' on 'CANCEL' to return to the markbook.
A new exam name only needs to be entered if the exam is scaled in a new
column. If a Class exam was scaled then only a Class exam name can be
entered, similarly for a Year exam.
Multiple Exams (Ctrl - N)
Select 'Exam - Scale Mean - Multiple Exams' from the menu.
This option is similar to scaling a single exam except that a large number
of Class or Year exams or combinations of both can be scaled to a new Mean /
Standard Deviation in one operation. The exams will be scaled in their
present positions and the position of the cursor is not important. After
selecting the exams to be scaled, and clicking 'select' on 'SCALE', the
program will request the following inputs;
a)New mean. b)New standard deviation. c)New total mark.
If any of the numbers entered is zero or if the total mark is less than the
mean, then the numbers will be requested again.
The maximum and minimum scaled mark for the selected exams will now be
displayed. If the scaled marks are less than zero or greater than the new
total mark then a 'beep' is heard.
Clicking 'select' on 'NEXT' will display the maximum and minimum scaled mark
for the next selected exam. After all the exams have been displayed the user
now has the option of:
Clicking on 'SCALE'' to accept the scaled marks whereby the scaled marks
less than zero will be given the value of zero, and marks higher than the
Total mark will be truncated to the new Total mark.
Clicking 'select' on 'RE-ENTER' to enter a new mean / std dev / total mark
combination for the selected exams.
Clicking 'select' on 'CANCEL' to return to the markbook.
As the exams are scaled in their present column there is no need to enter a
new exam name. If the raw exam data needs to be retained then copy the
required exams to new columns before selecting the option.
Display Class / Year Mean (Ctrl - F)
Select 'Exam - Display - Mean' from the menu.
The markbook can display the mean /std dev. for a Class or a Year exam. This
option will toggle the display from one to other as given in the menu.
For a Class exam the Class and Year mean /std dev. will be same.
For a Year exam the Year mean /std dev. will be calculated on the data from
all classes for that exam. The Class mean /std dev. will only be calculated
from the class data for that exam.
The exam mean and standard deviation is only calculated for students who
actually have a mark entered for a particular exam. Blank mark positions are
ignored.
As the Class and Year mean /std dev. can be displayed, it is then possible
to scale a Class exam to the mean /std dev. that the class achieved in a
common Year exam, ie. Class exams can be moderated against common Year
exams.
A third method has been implemented for changing the display of the mean and
standard deviation for an exam type.
If the mouse pointer is placed over 'Class' or 'Year' next to mean heading,
then pressing 'select' will change the displayed mean to the other type. It
can be used at any time from any section of the markbook except when exams
are being selected for some option.
If the mean is changed while student marks are being entered then the mean
will be updated before it is displayed.
Scale Exam Total Mark
Single Exam (Ctrl - T)
Select 'Exam - Scale Total - Single Exam' from the menu.
This option will scale a Class or Year exam to a new Total mark. The exam
can be scaled in its present column or can be scaled and placed in another
column.
Select the exam to be scaled and if necessary place the cursor in another
column.
Click 'select' on 'SCALE'. Enter the new Total mark and press 'Return' Click
'select' on 'SCALE' to scale the exam. Click 'select' on 'CANCEL' to return
to the markbook.
A new name only needs to be entered if the scaled exam is placed in a new
column.
Multiple Exams (Ctrl - L)
Select 'Exam - Scale Total - Multi Exams' from the menu.
This option is similar to scaling a single exam except that a large number
of Class or Year exams or combinations of both can be scaled to a new Total
Mark in one operation.
After selecting the exams to be scaled, and clicking 'select' on 'SCALE', a
new Total mark need to be entered.
Click 'select' on 'SCALE' to scale the exams. Click 'select' on 'CANCEL' to
return to the markbook.
Exam - Display Marks
This allows exams to be selected and displayed in either whole mark format
or decimal format to one decimal place. The actual mark is unchanged, only
the display is rounded off to zero or one decimal places.
Exam - Info
Selecting an exam after choosing this option will display the following data
on the exam (Only numerical exams can be selected):
Exam name
Exam type
Maximum and minimum mark
Mean and standard deviation
Number of students present and absent for the exam
Class Exam
The following options all have a similar format with Class exams (and Year
exams in some cases) being selected and the cursor being placed in another
column to indicate the position for the calculated data to be placed.
If the cursor is placed in a column containing a Class exam then there will
be the option of overwriting the data already in the column. The exam name
will remain unchanged.
An error message will be displayed if the cursor is placed in a column
containing a Year exam and another column will be need to be selected.
Adding and Weight Adding Exams
It is now possible to choose between using actual exam marks and whole exam
marks to calculate the final mark when adding exams.
This is particularly useful if exams need to be added to calculate a final
mark that will be used to obtain a ranking for a student to be used on a
report. This removes the possibility of two students having a different
combined total mark and the same rank or vice versa.
